Julian Schwinger: 100 years
Harvard's climate skeptic Willie Soon has sent me a link to the Crimson article describing a Harvard event that took place last week. Julian Schwinger was born on February 12th, 1918. 100 years and 2 days later, some of his grateful junior collaborators didn't forget and gathered. It's useful to know that 1918+100=2018 which is why we face the celebrations of 100 years of Schwinger, Feynman, and Czechoslovakia in this year (the third co-winner of that QED Nobel prize was Tomonaga *1906, not Czechoslovakia). There are dozens of TRF blog posts that mention Schwinger, including a shor... more »

Fracking Ban is Causing San Francisco Earthquakes
The fracking ban is causing earthquakes in San Francisco. One of the favorite sophistry tricks of the alarmists is to identify natural phenomenon and falsely blame it on CO2 or fracking. Josh Fox famously blamed natural biogenic gas on fracking in his schlocumentary Gasland. The truth isn’t the issue to Josh Fox and his misguided alarmist friends, … Continue reading "Fracking Ban is Causing San Francisco Earthquakes"
Billy Graham Died
Ever watch the *Last Kingdom*? There's a dramatic scene towards the end of the second episode of the second season where Alexander Dreymon's character, Uhtred, the dashing heathen protagonist, dares the evil Abbot Eadred to "say it one more time and go meet the devil." She he does... and he does. Big deal that he killed a man of God, with big consequences, despite it being the arch-villain of the first couple of episodes of Season Two. I'm guessing that thou shalt not kill abbots was a big megillah back in the 9th Century. Yesterday Billy Graham, who's been hectoring America for a... more »

6 Freaky Weapons That Came out of the Civil War
*Task and Purpose, Francis Horton* *History, North America* A war like no other spawned some crazy weapons. If there is anything that drives innovation in science and technology, it’s a good old-fashioned war. When you need to kill your enemies faster and deader than they kill you, governments are willing to try nearly anything, no matter how insane it sounds. That isn’t to say we haven’t gotten amazing technology from war. Rockets, microwaves and radar were all game-changing innovations during battle, but also have turned into essential pieces of our everyday lives, helping hu... more »

Could Israel's 'Tank Shield' Make the U.S. Army's M1 Abrams Even More Deadly?
*Michael Peck* *Security, Middle East* Or is it a paper tiger? For years, American tank crews could only gnash their teeth while their Israeli and Russian counterparts enjoyed active-protection systems to stop rockets from destroying their vehicles. Envy turned to hope in 2016, when the U.S. Army finally decided to begin testing APS defenses for its armored vehicles. Then earlier this month, the Army announced that it would fit 261 M-1 Abrams tanks—enough for three brigade combat teams—with Israel’s Trophy APS system. But will these antirocket defenses really work? A Pentagon i... more »

Russia's Su-57 Deployment in Syria Is a Dangerous Farce
*Tom Cooper* *Security, Middle East* The fighter isn't ready for combat. Late in the evening on Feb. 21, 2018, a photograph appeared on social media purportedly showing two Russian Sukhoi T-50 prototype stealth fighters — also known as PAK-FAs or Su-57s — in the sky over Hmemmem air base in western Syria. While the photograph was rather blurry and could not be precisely geo-located, by the morning of Feb. 22 two videos appeared on the same social media depicting almost the same scene. A pair of T-50s escorted by an Su-35 interceptor. The authenticity of the photo and videos is s... more »

Fisking 'Feedback' on the BBC's Brexit coverage
Whatever reservations some of us might have about Samira Ahmed's *Newswatch* and its usefulness (though I'm glad it exists and that it's to the credit that the BBC broadcasts it), I really don't think it can be credibly denied that its teeth are a heck of lot sharper than its Radio 4 equivalent, Roger Bolton's *Feedback*... ...or that the otherwise very opinionated, censorious Samira Ahmed does a far, far better job of concealing her own views than Roger Bolton ever manages to do. For example, Samira would *never* begin an edition of *Newswatch *like this: *Roger Bolton*: Hello... more »

Hot Rumor: The Federal Trade Commission May Be Coming Back To Life
This week, the Open Markets Institute reported some good news, namely that the Federal Trade Commission may be about to "waken from it's anti-trust slumber." Hard to imagine. For the last few years, the Federal Trade Commission all but vanished as a major player in anti-monopoly enforcement. In part, this was due to a lack of staff. For much of the last year, the FTC had only two sitting commissioners. Mainly, however, it was due to ideology. Two of the most influential recent commissioners-- Maureen Ohlhausen and Josh Wright-- were strong proponents of libertarian competition ph... more »

This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves." - Blaise Pascal

Nobody Wants to Talk About What Many Mass Shooters Have in Common
[image: undefined] In the aftermath of yet another mass shooting in the United States, the internet and broadcast news alike are inundated with commentary about why this keeps happening in America. Some blame guns, others blame mental health, and still others confidently blame false flag events and crisis actors. But one commonality among numerous mass killings in the United States remains absent from these conversations. It is always reported when details of the shooter are published, but the widespread connection is rarely acknowledged: A mounting number of mass shooters have tie... more »

I had to laugh at this report.
