Turkey Commemorates Last Year's Failed Coup
*CNN:** A year after failed coup in Turkey, Erdogan says 'behead traitors'* (CNN)Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan -- delivering feisty and stirring messages on the one-year anniversary of a failed coup aimed at unseating him -- lauded the popular resistance that helped stop the coup, and promised to decapitate "traitors," a sign that his harsh crackdown against his foes over the last 12 months will continue. Speaking to hundreds of thousands of people at a massive ceremony on Saturday in Istanbul, Erdogan urged vigilance against lurking enemies and declared that last summer'... more »
The Fight For Mosul Is Far From Over
*Andrew Doran, NRO:** Bulletin from Mosul — the Mission Is Still Far from Accomplished* ISIS has been driven from from its former stronghold, but the city is in ruin, and the scourge of Islamic terrorism persists in the region. ‘Something’s going on in the Old City,” said the Iraqi fixer, jumping off the phone with another fixer already in Mosul. We were a two-vehicle SUV convoy, mostly journalists and fixers, headed into the city, where, on Sunday, Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory — perhaps an ominous gesture. Other pockets of ISIS remain in Iraq, such as in ... more »

We're Fine With A Good Litmus Test... But Not With Identity Politics
Blue America is now backing 3 exceptional military vets for Congress-- Doug Applegate (D-CA), Randy Bryce (D-WI) and Jim Thompson (D-KS). I have to admit, though, that we didn't decide to endorse any of them *because* of their service. We endorsed each one because of their progressive policy positions and because they convinced us that they are sincere about those positions. All 3 back John Conyers' Medicare-For-All legislation, for example, but all three really mean it. It's not like the California legislative phonies who campaigned on single payer taking special interest money a... more »

The BBC website says that Chris knew that "the 13th Doctor was always going to be a woman". Donald Trump compares colluding with a foreign government to steal an election with the possibility of receiving debate questions ahead of time.
HillaryClinton can illegally get the questions to the Debate & delete 33,000 emails but my son Don is being scorned by the Fake News Media? — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 16, 2017 Damn, that is just pathetic. Every time Trump feels under attack his first response is to deflect by saying "They did it too," or making something up to direct attention to others. Just want to point out that there is no evidence that Hillary actually received any questions ahead of time, this was a town hall not a debate, and that Hillary would have been prepared for that question anyhow. “House Approves $696 Billion Military Spending Bill”; A Comment
*“House Approves $696 Billion Military Spending Bill”* by Jason Ditz "In a 344-81 vote yesterday, the House of Representatives passed their version of the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a $696 billion spending bill which far exceeds the amount of money sought by the Pentagon and the Trump Administration. The bill has a base $621.5 billion funding, and $75 billion in the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) fund, which includes at least $10 billion that are earmarked as part of the OCO but intended to be spent on domestic military spending. U.S. On The Verge of Becoming A Major Oil Exporter In Three Years
*CNN:* *Look out, OPEC! U.S. to become top 10 oil exporter by 2020* U.S. oil production is booming. The next step: conquering the export market. Increased shale production will transform the U.S. into one of the world's top oil exporters in just a few years, according to a new forecast by the consultancy PIRA Energy Group. PIRA estimates that American crude exports will grow to 2.25 million barrels a day by 2020, a four-fold increase from 2016. The boom would put the U.S. in roughly the same league as major oil exporters including the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. "In the years... more »
The Oceans are Absorbing Large Quantities of Carbon Dioxide
Alan Siddons recently pointed out that NASA’s James Hansen has been complaining that 44% of anthropogenic CO2 goes missing EACH YEAR, but CDIAC’s data clearly show that the situation has become far worse than that from the alarmist viewpoint. Alan Siddons found when looking at the CDIAC 2016 Global Carbon Project spreadsheet, under the Historical Budget tab, that he could graph both the annual increase in gigatons of carbon for the atmospheric CO2 concentration growth and for the change in carbon in the Ocean. The values to be discussed here do not resolve man's contribution from n... more »

“The True Face of the Free Market”
*“The True Face of the Free Market, Introduction” * by Sofo Archon Most people are under the false impression that our economic system - market capitalism - is fair and free, in which everyone can engage voluntarily and reap the benefits of their economic efforts, based solely on how sharp their business acumen is. Andrew Marr, BBC bias and Brexit - A Short Study
One way to look at the question 'Is the BBC biased?' is to list all the questions put by a particular BBC interviewer on a particular subject over a short (or long) period of time and see if they show evidence of bias. Things to look out for would be the perspective the interviewer asked their questions from. Is it a consistent perspective used against all interviewees, regardless of their own positions (partial interviewing) ? Or is it a varied perspective responsive to the interviewee's own position (i.e. impartial, devil's advocate interviewing)? Well, here's a list of all the... more »

Moore’s law still reigns supreme over the technological playground, but it appears that our toys have outgrown us – or are very, very close to doing so. Each prediction about what this will mean for the human race is wilder than the next. The wildest prophecies of all cluster around a concept known as “the singularity.” Now there’s a word. Something to do with single, with singleness, oneness, with one or perhaps, The One. All of that and more is wrapped u... more »

Russia's Next Super Weapons: Big Aircraft Carriers and Nuclear-Powered Destroyers?
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, Europe* Could this happen? Russia is likely to build larger surface combatants in the coming years—with larger corvettes and frigates in the works. Instead, Russia will likely build scaled up versions of existing warship designs. “Russia’s corvettes and frigates are set to get bigger in order to accommodate larger magazines and more weapon systems,” Cen... more »
