Nelson Mandela: Communist, Terrorist, Rabble-Rouser!

Northerntruthseeker at Northerntruthseeker - 39 minutes ago
I have truly been surprised over the last few days about how much all the reports on the Electric Jew and in the Jewish controlled newspapers have concentrated on the death of the former South African communist and terrorist leader, Nelson Mandela. It has been sickening to see all of the reports calling this person one of the "greatest men" in all history, without telling the truth about how this man sought a violent revolution to take over South Africa and cared little about how many people, either black or white, that died in the process... Few know that he was imprisoned for so... more »

Rand Paul-- This Year's Avatar Of Compassionate Conservatism And Tough Love

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 3 hours ago
While congressional Republicans-- with their 9% job approval rating-- boasted about obstructing President Obama at every turn, the Administration was imploring Congress to extend unemployment benefits to the longterm unemployed. Rand Paul on *Fox News Sunday* today said he opposes extending benefits-- but it's because, he says, he loves unemployed workers and just wants to do what's right for them. Extending benefits, he insists, would be doing them a "disservice… When you allow people to be on unemployment insurance for 99 weeks, you're causing them to become part of this perpet... more »

Mandela was no saint [updated]

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 3 hours ago
Nelson Mandela was no saint. Not even Bishop Desmond Tutu thought of him that way, “guffawing at the idea that Mandela was anything so dry, hollow and uninteresting.” He took up “armed struggle” against the South African state that denied him rights based on his race—becoming the leader of the armed faction of the ANC that emerged after the Sharpville massacre to carry out indiscriminate bombings against innocent South Africans. The Church Street bombing alone, carried out under his successor in the role Oliver Tambo, killed 19 people, and injured many more. Mandela himself was... more »

Ijiraat

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 3 hours ago
The Ijiraat are the shape-shifters. These land spirits are elusive and can transform into any arctic animal to disguise themselves. Most often they take the shape of a raven, bear, wolf or even a human. The only part of the Ijiraat that it cannot disguise is its red eyes. In all of it forms, both human and animal, its eyes always remain red. These hidden creatures are portrayed as evil and malicious in many stories. These stories warn that the Ijiraat lie in wait for lone travelers, changing shape to fool and get close to the travelers. Some elders argue that these land spirits an... more »

Whose sarin?London Review of Books By Seymour M. Hersh Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing ... more »

Depoliticise MP's Pay

Phil at A Very Public Sociologist - 6 hours ago
MP's shouldn't get a huge pay rise. And you don't need a hotline to each and every registered voter to know the overwhelming majority would agree. It's quite simple. A £66k salary is a great deal more than the majority of people will ever see in their pay packet. A tidy sum like this may well have started out with the best intentions; of ensuring working people could afford to become MP's and that the Commons wasn't the exclusive playground of the rich. However, if a week is a long time in politics what is a century? These days MP's remuneration connotes nothing of the sort. It spe... more »

*1. An excerpt from, "Whose sarin?" by Seymour M. Hersh, London Review of Books, December 8: * The administration’s distortion of the facts surrounding the sarin attack raises an unavoidable question: do we have the whole story of Obama’s willingness to walk away from his ‘red line’ threat to bomb Syria? He had claimed to have an iron-clad case but suddenly agreed to take the issue to Congress, and later to accept Assad’s offer to relinquish his chemical weapons. It appears possible that at some point he was directly confronted with contradictory information: evidence strong enough ... more »

You can't get rid of poverty by giving people money [updated]

Poverty campaigners have released a report this morning suggesting one in four NZ children are living in poverty. The poverty measured today is not poverty measured in *absolute* terms--that is, it is not the grinding poverty someone from before the industrial age would recognise as having existed for most of human history up to that point. *Prior to the advent of industrial capitalism (in roughly the 1760s) the lot of the English working class was generally miserable. [*This post appeared in somewhat different form on Jan. 10, 2010.*] The Bruckner Monument in City Park, Vienna *by Ken* Back in January 2010, when the original versions of this series of posts appeared, we had only recently adagio-ed our way from Beethoven's two great symphonic Adagios, of the *Eroica *and Ninth Symphonies, to those of Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) and Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) -- which I used as a pretty nervy way to tramp onto the turf of two of the trickier composers in the pantheon. Bacolod City -- Arrived here yesterday in the provincial to attend the wedding of my beautiful niece, Nessa Oplas-Sy. This morning, I went to my hometown, Cadiz City to see again my parents, took some photos. Out of the 84(?) provinces of the Philippines, I think Negros Occidental has the most optimal land use. One will hardly see even half-hectare of idle land. Cities, housing villages, coconut, banana, tree farms and sugarcane farms. Lots of it, Hundreds of thousands of hectares of sugarcane farms. The answers are already in your heart Dear Ones, all of them, and the moment when you will clearly hear them is quickly approaching with your finishing change. Remember no one can provide answers for you, we all can only show you the way that leads to this knowing, because it is always you who decide when is the perfect moment for receiving the answer and with acceptance of that experience of knowing you gain the most from the understanding that is there, hidden with... more »

Bring Back Greg

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 16 hours ago
Do you remember when Greg Dyke resigned as Director General of the BBC and huge throngs of BBC staff lined his way, cheering and clapping, such was the affection they held him in and their sense of injustice that he'd been forced out after the Hutton Inquiry... Well, their former boss has got into a spot of bother in recent days, having made a cut-throat gesture as the World Cup group draw was being made. That draw saw England being drawn against the (scary) likes of Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica. Greg's gesture appeared to write off England's chances. The UK newspapers have ha... more »

On Thursday, Andrew Mitrovica summarized what we know about Rob Ford: We now know this about Ford. He is a habitual liar. He is said to have uttered racist and homophobic slurs. He pisses behind elementary schools in broad daylight. He has repeatedly exchanged suspicious packages at suspicious times with an alleged drug trafficker who was once his occasional driver. He threatens to kill people. He refuses to be interviewed by police who have — *ever* so politely — asked him to answer a few questions. He’s purchased and consumed hard drugs. Nelson and Margaret

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 18 hours ago
This morning's *Sunday *on Radio 4 did seem like a Nelson Mandela special, but first impressions (and, perhaps, my own biases) misled me into thinking there was more of it than there actually was. Counting up all the time devoted to Nelson Mandela revealed that *Sunday *devoted just over 38% of the programme this morning to his memory. I wondered how that compared to their coverage of Margaret Thatcher's death back in April. Well, doing the sums on that edition of the programme revealed that they devoted 34.5% of that edition to her memory. Which isn't radically different. The... more »

The Space Review: As China goes to the Moon, prize teams stay in the race While several private American companies are planning robotic missions to the moon, China launched a man-sized robotic scout to the moon on Monday. The country’s recent manned missions and efforts to build a new space base suggest a future manned mission to the moon, though why is an open question. Speculation has run from the desire to build a military missile base -- a Death Star of sorts -- to national pride to simple economics. The answer may be far simpler: The moon is “easy” to get to. “If you’re still try... more »

Thor News - Alien Planet questions Star formation theory

Man, I love Thor News's no nonsense approach to Science, even when he's raking up old dirt like news of this massive planet found wandering in space. "Tell it like you see it," and he does, even when he's taking cheap shots at the political Left-Right paradigm. Also, isn't it obvious that the 'sun' is formed when the fabric of space LOCALLY FRACTURES on a microscopic (atoms) or macroscopic (stars) scale? This 'local fracture' is where the Universe does its Electric Universe thaaang, allowing a star to form, that in itself allows the planets to form. As large as they are, planet... more »

You really should check out this morning's BBC News and Sky News website home pages. They are strikingly different, and have to be seen to be believed. The BBC is still leading with Nelson Mandela, and its home page is heavy with Mandela stories. I count 31 separate articles (of one kind or another) on the home page alone. Sky News is leading with match-fixing claims instead and has just one Nelson Mandela story (in third place in its running order). How Many Republicans In Congress Does Oily Joe Barton Speak For When He Says He Wants To Abolish The Minimum Wage?

Monday candidate registration for the 2014 congressional elections close in Texas. So far "Oily" Joe Barton doesn't have a Democratic opponent, just a teabagger, Frank Kuchar, in the primary and then a Libertarian, Hugh Chauvin, in the general. Another dismal DCCC failure presided over by Steve Israel! Since Barton has no Democratic opponent to worry about, he strayed on Thursday from his usual diatribe on the fabulousness of Big Oil and ventured into one of the most unpopular positions in America-- abolishing the minimum wage. Second Seminole War

In 1835, the U.S. Army arrived to enforce the treaty. The Seminole leader Osceola led the vastly outnumbered resistance during the Second Seminole War. Drawing on a population of about 4,000 Seminole Natives and 800 allied Black Seminoles, he mustered at most 1,400 warriors (Andrew Jackson estimated they had only 900). They countered combined U.S. Army and militia forces that ranged from 6,000 troops at the outset to 9,000 at the peak of deployment in 1837. To survive, the Seminole allies employed guerrilla tactics with devastating effect against U.S. forces, as they knew how to mov... more »

When you play a video game, you're playing fast and loose with communism. Who knew? Well, Paul Mason did, for one. His piece, 'How computer games can help us overthrow capitalism' demonstrates how critiquing games can, as much as any other media product, help illuminate certain cultural logics; sets of ingrained, commonsensical social practices; and the continuous structuring and restructuring of political economy. Quite why this kind of writing in relation to one of capitalism's cultural mainstays continues to be underdeveloped is baffling, both in and out of the academy and radica... more »
