Pope Francis named Person of the Year by Time Magazine

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 14 minutes ago
*Can you smell what The Pope is cooking?* Pope Francis is an excellent politician, and a great spiritual teacher. He became a good pope the moment he chose the name Francis. The fact that he is unnerving so many people means he is doing a good job at breaking ideological, social, political, and cultural barriers. Here is an excerpt from, *"Pope Francis Is Not Liberal Or Conservative: He is Prophetic"* by Tom Krattenmaker: Prophetic is probably the best word for the role the pope is playing -- not in the sense of predicting the future, but of standing outside of business and politi... more »

I'd Vote No, What About You?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 3 hours ago
There's a last minute, rush/rush-end-of-the-world vote scheduled for Thursday in the House, presumably Friday in the House of Lords, for the Frankenstein's monster of a "compromise" that Establishment shills Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Patty Murray (D-WA) reached Tuesday. The Budget Deal sucks. Can progressives stick to their values and principles and defeat it? Probably not. It's either this or the Republicans will shut down the government again. The discussion Tuesday night between Chris Hayes and Bernie Sanders about the deal was depressing. Bernie found solace in the fact that at le... more »

by Doug Storm: *Colonizing Measures* *The UCR *[Uniform Crime Reports which originated in 1929] *reveals more about police behavior that it does about criminality.* Some law enforcement agencies falsify the reports they submit to the FBI. Once a citizen reports a crime, police must make an official record for the crime to be counted in the UCR. Sometimes, however, law enforcement officers do not complete a crime report. Right to it: 1. Ross Douthat mentioned this one today: as far as we know, it turns out that employers are not dumping their employees on the exchanges. At least so far. I do think it's likely that over time the ACA will wind up pushing people out of employment-linked insurance, but it appears that a fast, destabilizing dump isn't happening. Good Douthat piece, by the way, especially in that he's absolutely right that the best way to think about the ACA now is in terms of potential outcomes and the future policy questions they will raise, not "success" or "failure." 2. Who really killed JFK and, if a conspiracy, who were they and what were their motives? The Assassination Records Review Board has kept secret 1,100 records that, according to the Associated Press, was claimed to be withheld from the American public because they contain “information about confidential sources or methods or have national security complications.” But 50 years after the fact those confidential sources are mostly dead, and the methods and “national security complications” of that period have nothing in common with today’s national security. Indeed, on April 27, 1961, JFK himself told the press corps that “…there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment…”

Paul was like a puppy that given time could cure cancer. He was a force of nature. He never backed down. Paul was my cousin and he came from the city and he was toned and judo trained to not give in. This was not important as we grew up Paul was always exploring and I was at his side just telling him that being with him was a great way to abide Yes I loved this guy he was so full of life and curiosity Now in my hick town in the near north Paul was as welcome as a second divorce but in this northern town people hopped beds with more frequency than bunnies left on the road considered dead Pau... more »

Pope person of the Year

Steve at Thinking Aboot - 13 hours ago
Pope Francis strikes me as a very good guy. He has seen the Pope on the wrong side of history for a lifetime. We all love Pope John Paul because he fought communism, but he did not step into the ring when the capitalist took hope away. So it will be interesting to see how revolution Catholicism plays in the mainstream. Nevertheless I salute the Pope for being so Christian.

VISIONS OF PISA: Ravitch buys into the cult!

*WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2013* *Part 3—A deeply flawed trumpeter:* Routinely, reading Diane Ravitch is an extremely large challenge. Yesterday afternoon, then again this morning, we disappeared to favorite nooks to reread parts of her new book, Reign of Error. Along with Amanda Ripley’s much more ballyhooed groaner, Reign of Error is one of our two current “big education books.” But as a writer, Ravitch tends to be extremely jumbled. For a world-class example, see below. That said, Ravitch also tends to be excessively partisan, whichever side of whatever fight she happens to be o... more »

Prosperity for the ruling class, austerity for the rest of you. So declared the two right wings of the Money Party yesterday as they rolled out a budget agreement that made a mockery of President Obama's recent vow to make alleviating the scourge of record wealth inequality the overriding issue of his second term. A deal which passive-aggressively condemns more than a million chronically unemployed Americans to lives of destitution while it restores most of the Pentagon sequester cuts actually won praise from the fiscally conservative commander in chief -- by virtue of the fact tha... more »

Attempted Reconciliation Between Iraq’s Anbar And Central Government Take One Step Forward Two Steps Back

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 14 hours ago
Since October 2013, the Mutahidun party that runs Anbar has tried to negotiate with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to put an end to the protests in the province. There have been several meetings between officials in Baghdad and Anbar over the last several weeks to try to work out some concessions between the two that might appease the demonstrators. Both sides are worried about the increasing terrorist threat in Anbar, and Mutahidun would also like to focus upon governance that would require the cooperation of Baghdad. it's human rights day: write for rights

I just now remembered that today is December 10, Human Rights Day, which celebrates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Each year on this day, I try to participate in Amnesty's annual Write For Rights. On December 10, hundreds of thousands of people around the globe write letters to, and for, individuals at risk. Good morning! Are you well? Quite a lot of things going round in my head so we will get going straight away if we may? *This is perfectly in order and we are happy to oblige you in answering matters that may be quizzically in the forefront of your mind.* Okedokey. It came to me that many people are attuned to different things and dare I say different Truths regarding the Ascension and The Event. Yet each one is of good intent I am sure ... and therefore coming from 'their Truth'. Yet surely someone / some channels have to be wrong? I mean it could even be you! For instance ... ei... more »

Killzone: Shadow Fall for the Playstation 4

Back in the olden days when hair was long and loading times were even longer, you could more or less divide video games into two broad and not entirely discrete types. In one corner were the fast-paced action-oriented games. They looked nothing like the arcade games of the early-mid 80s, but their ethic of playability owed more than a passing acquaintance to them. Glaring at them from the other end of the market were the more cerebral games. The proper chin-strokers. These were your adventure/role-playing games, and given their sedentary pace I'd say you can place early strategy ti... more »

And she consistently votes with Cruz and Sessions over 90% of the time. As Ranking Member of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, Collins is in a unique p... more »

GOP hypocrites hate handshakes

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 1 day ago
President Obama had the audacity to shake the hand of a world leader at Mandela's funeral. Before the internet was invented, we used to call this good manners. Some might even have called it responsible statesmanship. But the world leader in question was Raul Castro standing in for his brother Fidel. So of course GOPers immediately launched themselves onto the fainting couches, demanding smelling salts. Maybe somebody gave them bath salts instead, because this reaction from Senator Grumpy Gramps was batshit crazy. When asked if Obama should have extended his hand, McCain was quick... more »
