10:56am MSTCatch of the Day
To Scott Lemieux for (once again) shooting down liberal fantasies that the
only thing preventing Congress from passing single-payer health care
insurance in 2009-2010 was a failure of will from the president.
It's an excellent job, and sadly necessary, over and over again.
One key point that Lemieux doesn't mention this time: in one sense, this
really isn't about 2009 at all. It's about 2007 and 2008, when the three
leading Democratic presidential candidates converged on essentially the
same plan (with Obama famously omitting the individual mandate). That says
a lot. It says that no... more »

Constructive Dismissal
Hynes v. Qulliq 2013 NUCJ 25:
To reach the conclusion that an employee has been constructively dismissed,
the court must therefore determine whether the unilateral changes imposed
by the employer substantially altered the essential terms of the employee's
contract of employment. For this purpose, the judge must ask whether, at
the time the offer was made, a reasonable person in the same situation as
the employee would have felt that the essential terms of the employment

Reported Security Incidents Across Southern Iraq In 2013
MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 1 hour ago
Southern Iraq has witnessed plenty of violence in 2013, but it pails in
comparison to central and northern Iraq. While a province like Baghdad
might have five to ten attacks per day, some provinces in the south have
that many in a year. Different governorates have also gone through
different experiences. In Babil for example there has been a relentless
wave of attacks mostly aimed at average citizens. Basra has seen a mix of
Al Qaeda in Iraq bombings, and religious, political, and sectarian
violence. Karbala and Najaf have gone through repeated attempts to stir
sectarian tensions... more »

Hurricane forecasts are worthless

because they clearly don't work. Pages such as this one (with different

He says the USA is now far more competitive and multinationals are now

Battle For The Soul Of The Democratic Party
I speak to plenty of Democrats who want Clinton as their party's
presidential nominee for one reason: she's seen as the Democrats' best
chance to hold the White House. A policy agenda almost never comes into
play in their thinking. Democrats look at the ideological civil war
wracking the Republican Party now and they don't want any of that in their
own party. So careerist hacks and Wall Street shills like Debbie Wasserman
Schultz and Steve Israel babble incessantly about a "big tent" that is big
enough to encompass mortal enemies of working families and of progressive
ideals. It's... more »
URGENT - Thailand: Regime & Western Backers Claim "Insurrection" - Penalty, Death
*December 3, 2013* (Tony Cartalucci) - Anti-regime protesters, outnumbering
police at two locations in Bangkok, Police Head Quarters and Government

dropped leaflets over the protesters claiming that the anti-regime protests
constitute "insurrection" (which carries a maximum penalty of death), that
the leaders are to be arrested, and protesters are to return home.

Commerce or Community
Originally published on CounterPunch
Because the history of the United States is comprised of contradictions
(proclamations of liberty, for instance, are coupled with the practice of
slavery), it should come as little surprise to find that the holiday of
Thanksgiving – so steeped in hyper-consumerism – itself derives from the
rejection of a compelled commercialism. This history is especially relevant
today, as we consider how to reconcile another crucial contradiction – the
conflict between commerce (the mercenary) and community (the common – that
which is shared).

'Tis the Season for Noblesse-Obliging
That most blessed season of heartwarming rags-to-riches Hallmark and
Lifetime specials is upon us once again. The same moralizing plots
are foisted upon us year after year. One favorite is the debunked
conservative prosperity gospel, in which the poor mom working three jobs is
rewarded for her toil with a millionaire hubby from Santa. The other is the
Scrooge legend, in which the millionaire boss fires everybody, they suffer,
he notices in the nick of time, and he hires them back with a
one-time bonus and a one-time-only party in the mansion.
Looking at this year's line-up, I think ... more »
THE REAL PIRATE STORY
MB and I went to see the new movie called Captain Phillips last night.
It's about the American commercial ship captain who was taken hostage for
ransom by Somali pirates. The movie was well done and the acting quite
superb, especially the Somali actors, but the film was rather slim on
telling the real story why the people of Somalia have been reduced to acts
of piracy in order to survive.
When I got home I watched several videos to find out more about the
situation. I've previously posted some videos about this but it is a good
time to do it again. Because there has been virt... more »
DELIVERY DRONES
Drones to deliver for Amazon and for take-out pizza. Who knows what comes
next. Maybe drones to deliver groceries too?
Bottom line is that before long hardly anyone will have a job
anymore....who will have any money to order anything from Amazon or any
other business?
The Guardian (UK) takes this story apart. Here are a few excerpts:
Here's the problem: it's all hot air and baloney. As Jeff Bezos, Amazon's
CEO, acknowledged in the 60 Minutes segment, his plan to begin delivery by
drone won't be enacted until around 2018 – and that's a hugely optimistic
timeline.

Explaining Iraqi Kurdistan’s Policy Towards Syria, Interview With Wladimir van Wilgenburg
The conflict in neighboring Syria has provided both opportunities and
problems for Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Kurdish President
Massoud Barzani and to a lesser extent the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan
(PUK) have attempted to forge ties with Syrian Kurds and shape events there
to their benefit. These have only met with limited success as the Syrians
have their own agendas. To help explain this policy is Wladimir van
Wilgenburg who until recently was based in Irbil, and is an analyst for the
Jamestown Foundation out of Washington DC, and writes for Al Monitor.

OUTSCORING FINLAND: Script never sleeps!
*MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2013*
*Interlude—A second-grader asks:* “Is it true that Patrick had an operation
that made him not ticklish?”
In all our years of truth-squadding, it may have been the best question
we’d ever heard anyone ask.
We liked the formal presentation. (“Is it true that...” rather than
“Did...”) And we liked one youngster’s instinctive search for the truth.
In this instance, a 7-year-old was fact-checking her older brother, a
junior in high school. Out in the living room, he had made an implausible
claim to protect himself against group attack from four marauding gir... more »

Britain has risen to fourth spot in a table of nations holding the most
valuable brands thanks in large part to the success of hosting the Olympic
Games in 2012 and a positive reception to the ‘Great’ Britain promotional
work, according to consultancy firm Brand Finance.
A double whammy from 2012,... more »

reblogged from Removing the Shackles
I am posting a few pieces of conversation that have happened over the past
couple of days. Not only for Transparency's sake, but to help answer a
few lingering questions.
First off, I wasn't going to respond to this conversation last week- I
mean, I was, then I decided I wouldn't.... and now I've decided to make
just one last comment on the topic, followed by Heather's last comment on
the topic as well.
Here is the statement that ran all over the internet on skype and i... more »
