BWorld 508, Tobacco taxes and smuggling in the Philippines
* My article in BusinessWorld, October 4, 2021. Keeping taxes of tobacco products high and raising them is a favorite policy measure of governments, health NGOs, and other sectors. Under Republic Act (RA) 9334 of 2004, cigarettes with retail prices of P6.50 to P10/pack were taxed at P11-P12/pack. RA 10963 or the Tax Reform fo... read more

* Could a gas that leaks through steel be our new energy store?* Hydrogen is being touted as the solution to our energy woes. How did that happen, and why? “It’s really been because of the global move toward decarbonisation,” Hydrogen Council CEO Dr Fiona Simon said. “It’s time has really arrived because of the need for us as a global economy to move from the existing way that we use energy. Hydrogen has characteristics that we can value more than we could before.” Australia’s CSIRO has been working on the industrial applications of hydrogen for at least a decade, but its big bre... read more

Scale of China Energy Shortage Means a Multi-Year Problem
The combination of a sharp drop in hrdro power for this year at least and the loss of australian coal has produced a real energy shortfall in all of China. This surely means extending plant shutdowns through the winter to allow for home heating. This may also become China's new normal until they have properly corrected this problem. The real problem that has the longest time line is coal production and contract security will take time to reestablish after their cutting off Australia. I do think that australia has sent their coal to India. The big problem is that China is coa... read more
Chinas Red Deal
They never learn and they do not here as well. Create a regulator and you get a gatekeeper who takes bribes somehow. So away we go. Of course all those successful folks are making too much money. this informs the rest that it is possible and how it is done. The future of China is a population approaching 500 million and a political aand beaurocratic regime similar to Latin amertica where regulators always can be counted on to misperform unless bribed. The ‘Menacing Looks’ of AR-15s Make Them an Easy Target of Gun Control
*Peter Suciu* *Gun Control, Americas* If semi-automatic rifles could be banned, wouldn't it be that much easier to then move back to banning semi-automatic and eventually all handguns? *Here’s What You Need to Remember: *The “menacing looks” of the AR-15 and similar firearms, along with the public's confusion over semi-automatic firearms versus fully-automatic firearms made the modern sporting rifles an easier target. That even proved successful and led to the Assault Weapon Ban of 1994. Since it expired in 2004, gun control advocates have pushed for its reinstatement. Supporter... read more
