Biden Wants to Stay in Syria—But Withdrawal Is Overdue
*Michael Hall* *Syria, Middle East* The sober reality is that keeping even a token deployment of U.S. troops in Syria endangers American lives, doing more to risk dragging the United States into conflicts prudent leaders should seek to avoid. When the United States withdrew from Afghanistan, the moment was hailed—and alternately, decried—as a turning point which would usher in a series of U.S. military withdrawals as Washington reorients its grand strategy. Certainly, President Joe Biden’s rhetoric about ending an era of “relentless war” invited this interpretation. But two month... read more
State Capitalism Did Not Build China’s Economic Miracle
*Rainer Zitelmann* *China, Asia* Advocates of a strong state in Europe and the United States want the public to believe China’s economic success confirms that economic growth is inextricably linked with a strong state. Weiying Zhang’s analysis proves that the opposite is true As recently as 1981, 88 percent of the Chinese population was living in extreme poverty. Today it is less than one percent. How was this possible? Never in the history of the world have so many hundreds of millions of people risen from abject poverty to the middle class in such a short time. China’s develop... read more

Liberal Internationalism Cannot Solve Climate Change
*Thomas Hochman* *Climate Change, United States* Governments will no doubt have a role to play in the climate fight, but they must first recognize that not only do nations have incentives to not commit to the fight, but that even climate change itself will produce its winners as well as its losers. There’s a popular line, repeated throughout the environmental world, that goes something like this: Climate change affects all of us. It’s a global problem that requires a global solution—for when the planet warms, we all lose. This school of thought—known as international liberalism ... read more
Carbon Capture Is a Climate Change Game Changer
*Amitai Etzioni* *Climate Change, United States* Carbon capture has a much more attractive psycho-political profile than other climate-improving measures. It does not require individuals and industries to change. Even better, it could yield significant, visible benefits within a relatively short period of time. In the 1920s, the world population was growing at a rapid rate; however, food production lagged badly behind because it relied on animal and human waste for fertilization. Since waste could not be significantly increased, experts predicted worldwide famine. Fritz Haber is ... read more

In September, inflation hit 4.4%. The Conservatives are blaming Justin Trudeau. They say it's the 1970's all over again. But Paul Krugman sees things through a much wider lens: It’s been a troubled few months on the economic front. Inflation has soared to a 28-year high. Supermarket shelves are bare, and gas stations closed. Margaret Thatcher’s Fake Individualism
One of Margaret Thatcher’s many famous sayings was: “There is no such thing as society.” She believed that there were only individual men and women. But how do you keep these individuals together? But she had a poor grasp of the history of the country that had made her the prime minister.
