Forget About Going Back To Normalcy-- That Does Not Exist Any Longer
Not normal: Federal Judge Sallie Kim held Trump Education Secretary Betsy DeVos in contempt of court for violating an order to stop collecting loan payments from former students of scam colleges. Kim fined Education Department $100,000 for violating the preliminary injunction. "The exceedingly rare judicial rebuke of a Cabinet secretary came after the Trump administration was forced to admit to the court earlier this year that it erroneously collected on the loans of some 16,000 borrowers who attended Corinthian Colleges despite being ordered to stop doing so." Everything your medical doctor is NOT telling you
From the NewsTarget: Excerpts: In the American medical world, nothing ever really gets “solved.” It’s all about “maintenance” and treating symptoms, using drugs, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. In America, there is no reward for doctors curing their patients, in fact, they’re punished for it. If a patient comes in with chronic inflammation and joints swelling, not a single M.D. will talk to them about toxic canola oil, GMOs, fluoridated water, conventional gluten, bleached foods, aspartame, MSG, or nitrate-loaded meats. If that M.D. gave any nutritional advice that could possib... more »

Flatness is as flatness does
Courtesy of a commenter at Alma Boykin's place yesterday, I was led to this informative (?) article. In a survey conducted by the American Geographical Society, almost a third of all respondents said that Kansas was the flattest state. Some people even call it “flatter than a pancake.” But what does science have to say about that? The first, and only, study that we know of that directly compared the Sunflower State to a pancake was done by a trio of geographers in 2003. For their tongue-in-cheek analysis, they acquired a pancake from IHOP, cut out a sample slice and made a topogra... more »
The F-35 Is Powerful, But It Doesn't Matter If It Can't Reach Its Target
*Marcus Hellyer* *Security, Asia* The jet is completely reliant on aerial refueling. *Key point: *The tankers needed to refuel the F-35 are large and vulnerable. In part 1, I examined the hard limits on the F-35A’s unrefuelled range. Air-to-air refuelling can certainly help extend it. Tankers can substantially increase fighters’ time on station (that is, how long they can stay out). But they can’t extend the jets’ combat range indefinitely. There are several reasons for this. The first is that generally pilots want to have enough fuel on board to get home alone, just in case the... more »
Iran vs. America's B-2 Stealth Bomber and F-35 Fighter (Who Wins?)
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Middle East* Could Tehran challenge the U.S. Air Force in war? We have some answers. *Key point: *Iran's air defenses provide a level of deterrence, but can't stop the U.S. Air Force. Iran’s military planners face an unenviable military challenge: preparing defenses against air attacks from the most formidable air forces on the planet. The once-formidable Iranian Air Force, starved of spare parts for its 1970s-era American-built fighters, is unlikely to effectively challenge U.S. air superiority. Instead, Iran has doubled down on a diverse array of ... more »

Movie Review: The struggle to live in the present
Many of my friends disliked it, and not without reason. And yet Raoul Peck’s film The Young Karl Marx seemed to me to get the essential thing right.1 I saw it as a film about the struggle to live in the present. As such, it’s a film that can help us do exactly that. The Young Karl Marx is fiction, but like all good fiction is more real than the documentary evidence on which it is based. It tells us not what actually happened, but a version of what happened with which to think what is happening now. In that sense, it is a species of realism.2 And in another sense too. It is a work of... more »
