Finally, One City Goes After Thieving Employers

Unknown at Screw You Guys, I'm Going Home - 11 hours ago
I've done a few posts about the criminalization of employment law, and in those posts I've asked why it's all one-sided. Employees are going to jail for alleged trade secret theft, accessing employer computers once they're fired, and a host of other offenses. Yet employers who steal from employees and who commit other crimes against employees largely escape. Well, one city has had enough. Philadelphia now has a unit in the DA's office just for prosecuting crimes against employees. The big focus is wage theft, but I'm betting they will get all kinds of crimes they can prosecute, li... more »

Russia’s Energy Diplomacy Brings Geopolitical Dividends

Dimitri Alexander Simes at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Dimitri Alexander Simes* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] Although Washington has long pushed its European allies to move away from Russian gas, some of its own policies have provided the Russian energy sector with a boost. Russia’s energy prospects looked bleak just a few years ago. The European Union, Russia’s largest energy customer, was moving to distance itself from Moscow over the latter’s annexation of Crimea and support for Eastern Ukrainian separatists. Russia was trying to break into the Chinese energy market and meeting significant difficulties along the way. Fina... more »

Stephen King, the King of Horror, didn't receive the Nobel prize in literature for his 200 short stories yesterday – the award went to Austria and Poland instead. Similarly, neither Trump nor the aggressive Swedish teenager got the Nobel prize in peace today – instead, it actually went to a guy (prime minister) who established peace in Ethiopia. ;-) Clearly, the committee in Oslo needed and still needs to recover some credibility after it was overspent in recent years. But Stephen King (I guess it is a different one) is the most famous author name of an exciting 4-author hep-ph prep... more »

For the Symposium on Mary Anne Franks, The Cult of the Constitution (Stanford University Press, 2019). Joseph Blocher The second chapter of Mary Anne Franks’ exceptional new book, *Cult of the Constitution*, shows how constitutional fundamentalism distorts debates about gun rights and regulation. In doing so, it offers novel contributions to the increasingly vibrant scholarly literature on the Second Amendment. I’ll focus on two; one conceptual and the other doctrinal. The first is Franks’ focus on the physical *instrument* (the gun) that is central to the right; the second is what... more »

A Political Pickle

Susan Delacourt writes that a majority government for either the Liberals or the Conservatives could deepen fissures in this country: Start with a Liberal majority win, which is far from the certainty it once seemed when Justin Trudeau was still basking in his 2015 victory. Remember when everyone was wondering when the Trudeau honeymoon would ever end? It will be a huge relief for the Liberals if Trudeau does pull off a re-election majority. But after a polarizing campaign, much of which turned on Trudeau’s personal record, the celebration won’t be countrywide, to say the least. ... more »

Justifying a Refusal to Vacate Office

The White House Counsel's letter to the House of Representatives explaining the President's refusal to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry is being torn to shreds by lawyers from both parties. I want to make one observation about the letter. If an impeachment proceeding in the House can be unconstitutional as the President claims, then why can't he say the same about the Senate trial? The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the sole power of impeachment. Nevertheless, the President says that what the House is doing violates due process. This is nonsense, but let's ac... more »

Are U.S.-North Korea Nuclear Negotiations Dead?

America Can—and Will—Win the Trade War

*Salvatore Babones* *Economics, Americas* [image: Reuters] Here's how. *Key point:* China has more to lose and Trump is right to finally push back.
