HALLELUJA! – BBC Updates Editorial Guidelines to Improve Scrutiny of Think Tank Pundits

barovsky at The New Dark Age - 16 hours ago
TruePublica Editor: At last, someone at the BBC has finally seen the light. It’s at the end of the tunnel there somewhere. For four years TruePublica has complained about the detrimental effects of organisations like the so-called Institute of Economics Affairs – one of the most opaque and secretive think tanks in Britain that swings way too much political influence. It has recently been caught in a cash-for-influence scandal that a decade ago would have seen the government fall.

Corbyn addresses Trades Union Congress in a display of cynicism and hypocrisy By Richard Tyler

barovsky at The New Dark Age - 16 hours ago
Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn addressed the assembled union functionaries at the annual Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Brighton Tuesday in a vain attempt to boost his left credentials among workers. He did so, however, under conditions in which he has capitulated time and again to the Remain agenda of his party’s right-wing Blairites.

Arguing from authority - by making up the authority

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 16 hours ago
I've noticed a rash of spurious "quotations" from famous people in recent weeks, focusing on the debate about the Second Amendment and gun "rights", but also spreading to encompass almost every aspect of individual liberties and freedoms. It troubles me that people aren't taking the time to verify the sources they cite so glibly; and it troubles me even more that *many of those sources are imaginary,* to a greater or lesser extent. The individuals named as sources never said what they're alleged to have said, rendering spurious any arguments based on those quotations. Here, for ... more »

In Brazil’s Rainforests, the Worst Fires are Likely Still to Come

Robert T. Walker at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Robert T. Walker* *Environment, Americas* [image: Reuters] Brazil’s wildfires are closely linked to deforestation which Brazil had successfully slowed last decade. The number of fires this year in the Amazon is the highest since 2010, reaching more than 90,000 active fires. Farmers and ranchers routinely use fires to clear the forest. But this year’s number reflects a worrisome uptick in the rate of deforestation, which had started to drop around 2005 before rebounding earlier this decade. Many people blame the Brazilian government and its pro-agriculture policies for the curre... more »

I'm an obesity doctor. I've seen long-term weight loss work. Here's how.

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
The take home it to accept best effort and to enjoy the trip. good advice in itself of course, but my experience is that weight loss is managed best by some form of interval fasting forcing you to contain your daily consumption to a set time window every day. I do about six hours per day. All that allows the digestive tract to do its work and to even void long before it kicks in again. Such a program should allow the bulk of unwelcome fat to slowly leave. Obsession over fine tuning it all is a really bad idea and can only lead to bad decisions that will counter your efforts.. ... more »

*[image: whiskey.JPG]* This is the ultimate outlier. Over the next thirty years, all the human population should effectively enter the middle class and this will support an expanded market. There will be setbacks, but event those will merely delay this maturation of human demand. Thus apply western demand to the whole global population. assuming steps are also taken to properly end poverty, population growth will ultimately be restored as well as keep it all sustainable. Right now we have been riding an expansion driven and sustainable by improving health outcomes. Most think t... more »

US Marine says cigar-shaped UFO sightings spreading worldwide and 'not military'

Why Turkey May Never Get F-35s for Its 'Aircraft Carrier' After All

Turkey’s insistence on buying Russian air-defense systems, despite warnings from NATO allies not to do so, could have serious consequences for the Turkish navy. Why Leaving a Hatch Open on a Submarine Is a Really Dumb Idea

The modern submarine is not a simple machine. A loss of propulsion, unexpected flooding, or trouble with reactors or weapons can doom a sub crew to a watery grave. Also, it’s a good idea to, like, close the hatches before you dive.
