Trump Frees Himself From Bolton – but Robert O’Brien Will Be Just as Bad

Philip Giraldi at 11 hours ago
[image: undefined] After months of rumors, John Bolton was finally fired from the White House but the *post mortem* on why it took so long to remove him continues, with the punditry and media trying to understand exactly what happened and why. Perhaps the most complete explanation for what occurred came from President Donald Trump himself shortly after the fact. He said, in some impromptu comments, that his national security advisor had “…made some very big mistakes when he talked about the Libyan model for Kim Jong Un. That was not a good statement to make. What's wrong with free trade agreements

bilaterals.org - 13 hours ago
26-Sep-2019 Free trade agreements (FTAs) and bilateral investment treaties (BITs) are often described as instruments to promote international trade and foreign direct investment. More precisely, they can be seen as tools for transnational corporations to push their interests at the expense of people and the environment. From the late 1950s into the 1970s, a wave of BITs were signed to protect the property of businesses in the former colonial powers from the governments of newly independent states. (...)

This week's Plot relates to the search of rare decays of the Higgs boson, through the analysis of the large amounts of proton-proton collision data produced by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CERN's marvelous 27km particle accelerator. The ATLAS collaboration, which is one of the four main scientific equipes looking at LHC collisions, produced an improved bound on the rate at which Higgs bosons may decay to electron-positron pairs (which they are expected to do, although very rarely, in the Standard Model, SM) and to electron-muon pairs (which are forbidden in the SM). read more

Reduce Suicides By Intervening At...Animal Shelters?

HILLSBORO, Ore. — On Kimberly Repp’s office wall is a sign in Latin: Hic locus est ubi mors gaudet succurrere vitae. This is a place where the dead delight in helping the living. For medical examiners, it’s a mission. Their job is to investigate deaths and learn from them, for the benefit of us all. Repp, however, isn’t a medical examiner; she’s a Ph.D. microbiologist. And as the Washington County epidemiologist, she was most accustomed to studying infectious diseases like flu or norovirus outbreaks among the living. read more

DON'T DO A NARROW IMPEACHMENT

Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog - 15 hours ago
As the impeachment inquiry got underway, Yastreblyansky expressed the concern that Democrats in the House are effectively dropping their efforts to hold President Trump accountable for other crimes and abuses. As we get obsessed with one government that generally wants us to do the right thing are we going to ignore the ones--I'm talking Saudi Arabia, UAE, Russia obviously, and the legion of Bannon/Orbán/Johnson/Modi etc.--that want to do harm? — Yastreblyansky (@Yastreblyansky) September 24, 2019 Knowing that the Senate is certain to acquit, he wrote this about the purpose of imp... more »

Turkey’s Erdogan Hints At Pursuing Nuclear Weapons (Again)

*Washington Examiner:* *'Leverage in every crisis': Turkey’s Erdogan hints at pursuing nuclear weapons* Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hinted at an interest in acquiring nuclear weapons, telling the United Nations that it is unjust for the weapons to be possessed only by major powers. “It bothers us like anyone else that the weapons of mass destruction are used as leverage in every crisis instead of their total elimination,” Erdoğan said Tuesday during the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. “The position of nuclear power should either be forbidden for... more »

*Harvard’s ‘Legacy’ Preferences Are a National Disgrace* *The high proportion of legacy admissions is certainly surprising but it may not be as consequential as it seems. Most of the children of Harvard graduates will be pretty bright themselves. They may not have worked hard in High Shool in full knowledge of their legacy status* The lawsuit against Harvard claiming it discriminates against Asian applicants may or may not succeed. But even if it fails, it has done the great public service of revealing how the school’s admissions process works behind the scenes. The school was ... more »

The Sinking Of A U.S. Aircraft Carrier Would Mean World War Three

Ships with the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group and John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group transit the Philippine Sea on November 16, 2018. Petty Officer 3rd Class Connor Loessin *Robert Farley, National Interest:* *If a Navy Aircraft Carrier Was Ever Sunk, World War III Begins* *A horrible thing.* *Key point:* The destruction of a carrier would kill thousands and lead to a swift response. Since the 1950s, the supercarrier has been the most visible representation of U.S. military power and maritime hegemony. Although supercarriers have participated in nearly every military confl... more »

PLOS ONE retracts perfume study when data don’t pass the sniff test

Adam Marcus at Retraction Watch - 15 hours ago
A pair of perfume researchers in England have lost a 2019 paper on what makes a scent appealing because, ahem, something about the data didn’t smell quite right. The article was titled “Social success of perfumes,” and it appeared in July in PLOS ONE. There was a press release and a university writeup about the … Continue reading PLOS ONE retracts perfume study when data don’t pass the sniff test

Cacao vs. cocoa

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 15 hours ago
I ran out of Hersey’s 100% cacao yesterday and when I stopped at Marc’s where I usually shop, it didn’t have any, so I picked up Baker’s 100% cocoa. Today I looked up the difference, and as I thought the cacao and cocoa aren’t not the same. It’s in the processing which destroys many of the antioxidants. Also the cocoa, even dark, has over twice the fat content of the cacao, according the the labels. https://blog.paleohacks.com/cacao-vs-cocoa/# So I’ll have to swing by another store and look for the cacao. But the cocoa, the article says, is better for baking, which I rarely do... more »
