Forget the AK-47 Assault Rifle: The PKM Is The Real Deal

Charlie Gao at Test Feed Using Fields - 9 hours ago
*Charlie Gao* *Security, Global* We break down why. Mikhail Kalashnikov is known for creating the AK rifle, but his contributions to Soviet firearms design didn’t end there. In 1961 he designed the PK machine gun, which was modernized into the PKM in 1969. Like the AK, this machine gun serves on to the current day. However, in many ways, it can be considered a better design than his rifle, despite it serving a different role. The PKM is sometimes described as “an AK flipped upside down and made in a different caliber,” which is not totally incorrect. Both weapons use the long-s... more »

*Warfare History Network* *World War II, * [image: Boeing B-29 42-4494 792 BS, 468d BG] B-29s built in Georgia helped the United States win the war with Japan. When Maj. Gen. Curtis Lemay, the hard-driving commander of the Twentieth U.S. Air Force based in Guam, decided to change tactics in early 1945 to boost the effectiveness of the B-29 Superfortress, it was the Bell Aircraft plant in Marietta, Georgia, that ultimately provided him with the stripped-down bombers that played such a key role in ending the war in the Pacific. The Bell plant, usually referred to both then and now... more »

On obvious motives

Greg Fingas at Accidental Deliberations - 10 hours ago
Murray Mandryk is absolutely right in his point as to why Scott Moe and his government shouldn't be using the trappings of power to intervene in Alberta's election campaign. But in claiming there's no explanation, he unfortunately misses Moe's obvious and problematic motive for doing so. After all, it's been no secret for quite some time that the ironically-named Saskatchewan Party's fund-raising strategy includes regular appeals to - and massive donations from - corporate Alberta. And both his predecessor and Moe himself have clung stubbornly to a model which allows outside donors ... more »

GARBAGE PERSON ANDREW KLAVAN THINKS NOW IS AN EXCELLENT TIME TO RELITIGATE "THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS"

Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog - 11 hours ago
I've been assuming that the right-wing habit of offering "thoughts and prayers" after every mass slaughter has been thoroughly discredited, as a clear attempt to shut down debate. But at the Daily Wire, Andrew Klavan responds to the New Zealand mosque massacre by defending the practice: When tragedy or atrocity strikes — as it just did with the mosque shootings in New Zealand — thoughts and prayers are not just an expression of compassion. They are, more importantly and more wisely, an expression of humility and helplessness. They are a way of saying: “There is nothing we can do in ... more »

Pakistan’s Long, Controversial Love Affair with the F-16 Fighting Falcon

Sebastien Roblin at Test Feed Using Fields - 13 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, South Asia* It's really complicated. During an aerial skirmish on February 27, 2019, an Indian Air Force MiG-21 Bison was shot down by a radar-guided missile. The Pakistani Air Force (PAF) claims the kill was scored by a JF-17 Thunder, a domestically-built fighter built with Chinese assistance. However, India subsequently revealed fragments of an AIM-120C-5 missile—a U.S.-built weapon only compatible with the American-built F-16s in PAF service. Pakistan has incentives to deny the use of F-16s, as secret end-user agreements may restrict the aircraft... more »

Russia and the Lebanese Islamic militia Hezbollah have become close allies in the civil war in Syria, with both of them supporting the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad in the conflict. Their relationship has not always been so friendly. When members of Hezbollah kidnapped four Russian diplomats in 1985, killing one of them, Russia dispatched the KGB’s Alpha Group to deal with the situation. Alpha Group is part ... more »

What the Heck Is China’s Patented “Magnetized Plasma Artillery”?

Michael Peck at Test Feed Using Fields - 13 hours ago
*Michael Peck* *Security, * This sounds scary...but is it? China claims to be developing “magnetized plasma artillery.” The Chinese military recently published a notice inviting researchers to devise a weapon that sounds like a sort of electromagnetic rail gun—which uses magnetism instead of gunpowder to fire shells—that several nations are developing. But actually deploying railguns has been hampered by the size of the weapon and especially the vast amount of electrical energy needed to propel a shell to speeds of greater than Mach 7. For example, despite years of research and ... more »

Isaiah BerlinThe two concepts of liberty that Isaiah Berlin describes in his essay, “Two Concepts of Liberty,” (*Liberty: Incorporating Four Essays on Liberty* by Isaiah Berlin; Edited by Henry Hardy) are “positive” and “negative.” Liberty in the negative sense, he says, is involved in answer to the question: “What is the area within which the subject—a person or group of persons—is or should be left to do or be what he is able to do or be, without interference by other persons?” Liberty in the positive sense is involved in the answer to the question: “What, or who, is the source o... more »

Meet the M60E6 Light Machine Gun: The Best on the Planet?

A surprising relic from World War II

I was surprised to learn that a prototype bridge constructed during World War II is still standing - the oldest example of its type in the world. Donald Bailey designed his world-famous Bailey Bridge in 1940, using the back of an envelope for the initial sketch. After development during 1941, it entered service during 1942. Millions of linear feet of bridge structure were manufactured in the UK, Canada and the USA during the war. It remains such a simple, effective, easy-to-use design, even compared to more recent developments, that the Bailey bridge is still widely used to this... more »
