Yet another excuse to control everybody
A new report draws racial inferences from pollution - and uses them as a rationale to propose additional restrictions and controls on society. Bold, underlined text is my emphasis. A study published Monday in the journal PNAS adds a new twist to the pollution problem by looking at consumption. While we tend to think of factories or power plants as the source of pollution, those polluters wouldn't exist without consumer demand for their products. The researchers found that air pollution is disproportionately caused by white Americans' consumption of goods and services, but dispropo... more »

Republicans['] Own Constitutional Discourse
Julian Nyarko, Eric Talley, and I have just posted a new paperthat uses computational methods to investigate the ideological and partisan structure of constitutional discourse on the floor of Congress (and secondarily in newspaper editorials). The headline finding is that constitutional discourse has grown much more polarized over the past four decades. In fact, it has polarized at least as rapidly as nonconstitutional discourse. How can computational methods show this? Relative to the early and mid-twentieth century, it has become substantially easier for an algorithmic classifie... more »

Europe Should Become a Leader of the Belt and Road Initiative
[image: From 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping shakes hands with visiting former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Beijing on Wednesday. 2014 [Photo/Xinhua]] The current very public dispute over whether Italy will sign an MOU with China regarding the Belt and Road Initiative, when Xi Jinping visits Italy on March 22, is significant. But the reasons being given against the MOU, from Brussels, London and apparently by some White House neo-con warhawks, are absurd. Simply reflecting anti-China geopolitical propaganda from those "imperial" locations, they do not address the plain... more »
The Battle for the Future of U.S. Foreign Policy Has Begun
*Ted Galen Carpenter* *Security, Americas* [image: Reuters] Congressional efforts are underway to seize control of foreign-policy decisions from the executive. Who will win? There are signs of growing congressional inconsistency, if not incoherence, regarding the authority of the president in foreign affairs. The legislature seeks to interfere on issues that are the president’s responsibility while still failing to fulfill its own constitutionally mandated responsibility regarding the war power. An incident of misplaced assertiveness took place in January when the House of Re... more »

The fact is, ALL politicians are corrupt, and all have the exact same agenda. Yes, that's windy!
A strong storm brought Force 12 (hurricane-strength) gusts of wind to the port of Antwerp over the weekend. Watch as they topple a stack of 40-foot shipping containers. Clearly, the container that fell into the harbor was empty, or at least very lightly loaded (otherwise it wouldn't have been floating so high out of the water). Even so, an empty 40' container weighs more than 8,000 pounds (four US tons); yet it was tossed around as if it were so much scrap paper. Definitely a strong gust of wind! Peter

*Washington Post:* *‘I’m not for impeachment,’ Pelosi says, potentially roiling fellow Democrats * House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in an interview that she opposes moving to impeach President Trump even though she believes he is “unfit” for office — her first definitive statement on the subject and one that stands to alienate members of her own Democratic Party who are intent on ousting the president. “I’m not for impeachment,” she said in a March 6 interview conducted for a future issue of The Washington Post Magazine. “This is news,” she added. “I haven’t said this to any press... more »

"DYING" REPUBLICANISM WON'T STOP BEING REANIMATED ANYTIME SOON
Corey Robin and Ross Douthat don't agree on much, but they agree that Donald Trump might be the new Jimmy Carter. Douthat writes: Though personally the two men are ever so slightly different, they seem to occupy a similar space in the arc of political history — both outsiders who seized control of a divided, exhausted, yet still powerful political party, both men who tried to push their coalitions into a new ideological formation, both presidents who commanded legislative majorities but accomplished next to nothing with them. The term that seems to fit them both is “disjunctive,” fr... more »
Toward A Solution Of The DAMA-Libra Dark Matter Puzzle
What is dark matter (DM)? This is one of the most pressing questions in fundamental science nowadays. We have observed that only one fifth of the matter that exists in the Universe clusters into stars and emits light - the rest appears to only interact gravitationally, producing phenomena we can study through the dynamics of galaxy rotation or by observing the deflection of light passing through it. read more

*UK: Those Birmingham parents are right* *Teaching primary-age schoolkids about sexual matters is weird* Liberal and left-leaning observers have found themselves doing something they never normally do: criticising Muslims. Specifically Muslim parents in Birmingham who have successfully pressured the local primary school to stop teaching their kids about homosexuality and transgenderism. Apparently it is outrageous for parents to exercise moral authority over their very young children and instead they should trust the state to impart the correct moral wisdom to their offspring. ... more »

Here's the reality, like it or not.* I have never seen such a large and diverse mess of misinformation spouted and parroted with wild abandon about a military skirmish than what has come out of the short spate of Pakistani-Indian air battles that occurred in late February. *With Ethanol And Biomass No Longer Viewed As ‘Green,’ Will Other Renewables Soon Follow?* Over the last 10 years, the cost of solar panels and wind turbines declined so significantly, and were scaled-up so quickly, that many people came to believe that a transition to renewables, as proposed by advocates of a Green New Deal, was all but inevitable. We already have all the technologies we need to transition to 100% renewables, leading scientists and scholars told The New Yorker’s John Cassidy. “The only reason not to do it is political inertia and the influence of the existing fo... more »
Lenten Vigil at BIW
We had our first Lenten Vigil at BIW last Saturday - sixteen attended. The vigils will continue each week until Easter. We meet in front of the BIW administration building at 11:30 am and then just before noon we walk down the street to a gate where workers pour out. These regular protests have been going on at the shipyard where destroyers are built for many years. Some dedicated folks keep showing up demanding disarmament and conversion of the place to build technologies that would help us deal with our real problem - climate change. Why can't we build offshore wind turbi... more »
Which is the Greater Threat - Russia or the United States?
In Pew Research Center's most recent Global Attitudes and Trends, Pew looked at how 26 nations around the world viewed threats to the globe. While the authors of the study looked at many threats including climate change, ISIS, cyberattacks, North Korea's nuclear power and the global economy, they also looked at two threats which I found particularly interesting given the seemingly endless growth of diplomatic strains between Russia and the United States. In this posting, I would like to provide you with data for all 26 nations comparing the percentage of people that feel that Ameri... more »

Thinking of Venezuela
Socialism has not worked out for the people in Venezuela. I realize that those of you who follow this blog will understand the situation there. The Venezuelan government, naturally, blames the United States for all of misery going on. A quick read of *Animal Farm* or *1984* will confirm that totalitarian governments must always have an outside influence to blame for their failures. The nationwide electricity black continues and looks indefinite. On the fifth day of the blackout, on 11 March, the government declared a national holiday, closing government offices and schools. It also... more »

THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal
Kurt VonnegutKurt Vonnegut’s short story *Harrison Bergeron* has around 2300 words but it gives an explicit account of an egalitarian society where everyone is fully equal and barred by the constitution from being smarter, better-looking, or more physically able than anyone else. In this dystopian world all values have been sacrificed in the name of “equality.” The exceptionally gifted have either been eliminated or are being controlled via technology. Here’s an excerpt from the short story: THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and... more »
