A new book cover, computer vision syndrome, and lots of hard work
Writing a military science fiction trilogy as a whole, publishing the books
within a few weeks of each other, is turning out to be a whole lot more
work than I'd bargained for! Not only does one have to format and prepare
each book for publication, but one has to ensure a common structure, "look
and feel", etc. across all three volumes - otherwise the trilogy becomes an
exercise in frustration for readers, who get used to one format in the
first book, then have to suddenly adapt to a new one in the next volume.
That doesn't make for a happy reading experience.

"How Systems Collapse"
*"How Systems Collapse"*
by Charles Hugh Smith
"I often discuss systems and systemic collapse, and I've drawn up a little
diagram to illustrate a key dynamic in systemic collapse. The key concepts
here are stability and buffers. Though complex systems are never static,
but they can be stable: that is, they ebb and flow within relatively stable
boundaries supported by reserves, i.e. buffers.
In ecosystems, this ebb and flow is expressed in feedback loops between the
weather, environment and plant/animal species which inhabit the ecosystem.

not a king and he lacks the power to unilaterally decide the fate of the
Philippines’ external relations, particularly vis-à-vis China and America.
In recent months, Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has seemingly
abandoned strategic diversification in favor of “strategic leaning” towards
China. To the Filipino leader,... more »

I once had a financial advisor, long ago, who told me he would vote for
Cuomo to be president because he would be the first Italian-American
president. He had no idea what Cuomo was about politically, just that he
was of Italian heritage, like the financial advisor. It made me question
his judgment and wonder if he was the right person for me to be working
with. I remember once, as a small child, my grandmother making it clear to
me that her loyalty to Israel was as strong as her loyalty to the U.S. I
was horrified and it stuck with me-- viscerally-- for 6 decades.

“Early in Claire Messud's new novel, “The Woman Upstairs”, the narrator
asks herself and others whether they would rather be able to fly or be
invisible. I suspect most who visit this blog would prefer to fly. Me too.
Until lately. More on that later. For now I want to ask a less frivolous
question, one more likely to split down the middle: Do you prefer, as a
matter of personal taste, Romanesque or Gothic?
Gothic aspires, Romanesque inspires. Gothic soars. Romanesque hunkers.
Gothic seeks to let go of the earth. Romanesque grips like a barnacle.
