'Complaints from both sides' - Part 659
Puppy showing bias A very dear anti-Brexit friend of mine gave me a spontaneous lecture recently, telling me to open my eyes to BBC bias. "Why can't people see that the BBC does exactly what the Tories tell them to do?", she asked incredulously. "It's all government propaganda". "They are so biased over Brexit," she continued. "Whenever there's an interview, the pro-Brexit person is always allowed to speak without interruption while anyone who opposes Brexit is talked down by the BBC". "It's so obvious, the bias", she concluded, before re-asking in total exasperation, "*Why* ca... more »

"Uncle Sam vs. Russia in Eastern Syria: the Nightmare Scenario"
*"Uncle Sam vs. Russia in Eastern Syria:* * the Nightmare Scenario" * By Mike Whitney "The impending collapse of ISIS has touched off a race for territory in the oil-rich eastern part of Syria pitting US-backed forces against the Russian-led coalition of Syria, Iran and Hezbollah. This is the nightmare scenario that everyone wanted to avoid. Washington and Moscow’s armies are now converging on the same area at the same time greatly increasing the probability of a conflagration between the two nuclear-armed superpowers. The only way a clash can be avoided is if one party backs down, ... more »
It seems people are in an uproar about Jimmy Kimmel getting talking points from Chuckie Schumer...
*and we should care - why?* Seriously. Jimmy Kimmel, a not very funny guy, who calls himself a comedian, is blah-blahing about health insurance on his late night show, and people actually pay attention. Supposedly, Schumer provided him with sound bites and talking points. Again I say, "So what?" The headline at The Blaze is a head scratcher: Jimmy Kimmel’s credibility on health care questioned after this revelation Call me silly, but I wasn't aware he had any credibility on issues like health insurance. I will defend his right to blah-blah all he wants - it is, after all, his s... more »
Viebeck gets it (almost) right!
*SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2017Maddow keeps pouring it on:* We thought about reviewing the Maddow Shows of the past two nights, in which a certain cable news star extended the culture of embellishment which has long since swamped her program. There's a bag of squirrels inside this particular cable star's head, and the squirrels inside that bag just won't let her go. That said, reports about Maddow's constant embellishments can take a long time to formulate on an otherwise promising Saturday. Let's look at Elise Viebeck's news report instead. How World War One Still Haunts America
[image: undefined] This year is the 100th anniversary of Woodrow Wilson’s pulling America into World War I. Many people celebrate this centenary of America’s emergence as a world power. But at a time when the Trump administration is bombing or rattling sabers at half a dozen nations and many Democrats are clamoring to bloody Russia, it is worth reviewing how World War I turned out so much worse than the experts and politicians promised. Wilson was narrowly reelected in 1916 on the basis of a campaign slogan, “He kept us out of war.” But Wilson had massively violated neutrality by p... more »

DOES TRUMP BELIEVE HIS OWN LIES?
President Trump traveled to Alabama last night to campaign on behalf of Luther Strange, who's trying to hold on to his Senate seat. Trump delivered an 85-minute speech that was occasionally about Strange, but often about Trump's usual hobbyhorses -- "Crooked Hillary" and so on. It's hard to say whether that will help Strange in his upcoming Republican runoff against Roy Moore, who's leading in the polls. Here's something Trump said that was actually about Strange (although you could argue that it was more about himself): President Donald Trump claimed his branding genius extended to... more »

Proudly To Their Undoing
Neo-liberalism has been a monumental failure. The evidence of that failure is piling up all over the world. Paul Street writes: Nearly three-fourths (71 percent) of the world’s population is poor, living on $10 a day or less, and 11 percent (767 million people, including 385 million children) live in what the World Bank calls “extreme poverty” (less than a $1.90 a day). Why History Proves North Korea Just Might Test a Nuclear Weapon in the Pacific
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, Asia* They might be just borrowing for China's nuclear playbook. A senior North Korean diplomat has suggested that Pyongyang might conduct a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific—the first atmospheric nuclear blast since China’s October 16,1980, detonation. "It could be the most powerful detonation of an H-bomb in the Pacific," North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong-ho told reporters according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency. "We have no idea about what actions could be taken as it will be ordered by leader Kim Jong-un." While its is not certain how s... more »

Global cooperation depends on the strength of local connections
Of course it does. Thus my Rule of Twelve. No communicating fully networked population is able to sustain conflict at all. Where the problem arises is when such communication is assigned to an ill chosen one in such a way that he or she restricts such communication. In short, hierarchy acts to limit cooperation and by extension, the more hierarchy we have the less cooperation we earn The future will see all this resolved. A lot we are actually relearning. It is instructive that my newly imagined rule of twelve is integral to Bronze Age community governance and likely goes... more »
The healing power of nature
This is a reminder, but also do note that methodology is also evolving as well and that this all needs to be taken much further. I do think that running water has much to do with all this. Thus there are plenty of local streams that need to be dressed up a little and set up for straight up canoe trips. This also has the advantage of placing eyeballs on these forgotten rivers and getting political support for full restoration. They will no longer be out of sight and out of mind. My own experience tells me that even modest creeks can use this attention and be nicely restored. ... more »
Return of the city-state
I personally posit the Communion of Xanadu as a global entity in which governance is through the natural community of approx. 150 souls and the rule of twelve. The Nation State as we know it reduces natural communities into virtual communities inefficiently and fails a significant portion of its citizens. What can be retained is the nation city that provides direct citizenship to ethnic avocations. For example the city of Edinburgh can grant Scottish citizenship to all Scots. This would give it almost 50,000,000 citizens able to vote on obvious cultural issues and a real for... more »
A ‘humanely’ killed animal is still killed – and that’s wrong
[image: Hereford cattle arrive at a meat processing plant. Photo by Daniel Garcia/Getty] This is a stretch of course. The animal's death releases its spirit body for a new cycle of life. A humane death does matter while death itself does not matter at all. The reason that is true is because death is inevitable while the experience is what is retained by the spirit body. . The faux moralists argue nonsense that demands outright extinction for all domesticates and a complete rewilding of the Earth as well. I am actually a fan of a successful vegetarian di... more »

In the last seventy years, the Republic of Korea Army (ROK Army) has evolved from a constabulary force into one of the largest, most powerful, technologically advanced armies in the world.
