*CNBC:* *Defense stocks see huge surge – here’s how investors are playing them now* Shares of Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Boeing hit all-time highs in Friday trading. And while some strategists and portfolio managers say they like defense stocks from a fundamental perspective, their near-term conditions and valuation as an industry offer some hesitations going forward. Global geopolitical tensions have given way to upside for the names; the S&P 500 aerospace and defense index is now pacing for its best weekly performance since May. Firefighters in Florida help save a trapped deer from dehydration

White Wolf at White Wolf - 10 hours ago
Salt water had mixed with the natural drinking holes, making them undrinkable Firefighters in Florida helped save a deer from dehydration after finding it trapped in a home destroyed by Hurricane Irma. A crew from Delray Beach Fire Department was surveying damaged buildings in Big Pine Key, Florida, as part of a strike team when it came across the weakened deer inside a home. Lieutenant Nicholas Johnson fed the deer four bottles of water, and the buck ran off after regaining his strength. 'I don't know who was more startled the deer or me,' Johnson, who is part of the Strike te... more »

Despite Brexit

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 10 hours ago
Alan at *Biased BBC* poses me an interesting question: Was Charles Moore correct to claim, during his spat over BBC Brexit bias with Jonathan Dimbleby (and the usual booing *AQ *audience) on *Any Questions* today, that the BBC uses the phrase 'despite Brexit' "whenever there’s a business story on the BBC"? Or was Jonathan Dimbleby right to cast doubt on his assertion and demand proof? Well, I *have *been half-keeping my eye on this ever since the referendum - and ever since people I like began claiming that the BBC was using the phrase 'despite Brexit' a lot - and I've found *very... more »

Did Melania Trump Steal Her United Nations Speech from Michelle Obama?

Australians have always been noted for a robust sense of humor. It's come to the fore again in a postal referendum on whether to legalize same-sex marriage in that country. The Sun reports: Around 16 million survey forms were posted to Australians across the country this week so people can have their say on legalising same-sex marriage. But among those sent out featured unfortunate phrases - including "bumsex" and "d*ck to" - according to eagle-eyed recipients. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) ... apologised for the potentially "offensive" words and said it will issu... more »

Comey’s Speech at Howard Prompts Protests

Assorted content for your weekend reading. - Paul Krugman discusses how the Republicans' latest attempt to undermine U.S. health care is built on a foundation of cruelty and lies - and is entirely consistent with their usual modus operandi. And Joe Watts reports on new polling showing how popular Jeremy Corbyn's progressive policy agenda is with the UK public. - Richard Forbes rightly argues that ending tax avoidance should be a multipartisan issue. But Murray Dobbin notes that the preservation of unfair tax preferences is instead cutting across party lines, with the Libs' Finance... more »

A Brief Encounter with 'Today'

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 12 hours ago
I thought I might actually listen to an edition of *Today *in its entirety today, following yesterday's post about its 'dumbing-down'. It was disappointingly political and hard-news-focused, with lots on Mrs May's speech and Moody's downgrading and Rohingyas and Uber and capitalism and universities and undocumented migrants. There wasn't a single science story on it and the only arts bit was James Naughtie interviewing a children's author. There was, however, the new Nature Notes section - something I wholly approve of. Today's Nature Notes featured Charles Smith Jones of the... more »

Merkel's decision to open Germany's and hence Europe's borders to massive immigration under question not that you'd know if you rely upon the BBC for your world news

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 12 hours ago
The Times reports that: 'The AfD's call for an official inquiry into whether the 63-year-old chancellor broke German law received a boost yesterday from a report in the conservative daily newspaper Die Welt that a non-partisan Bundestag committee had concluded that the decision to open the country's borders should have been put to MPs.' Good luck finding any reporting of that Bundestag committee on the BBC where support for unfettered Muslim immigration is a higher priority than reporting inconvenient facts.

A Look Inside The Plane That U.S. President Trump Will Fly In During A Nuclear War (Video)

*IBTimes*: *Inside President Trump's secret flying nuclear bunker* This 'Doomsday Plane' is where you'll find the President if it all goes nuclear. New Zealand matters

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 12 hours ago
For some reason I've been watching the New Zealand election result with some interest today and found the BBC News website very reluctant to give any news on it. They didn't post any updates for nearly a day - unlike various newspapers, some of whom even ran live blogs. A couple of hours ago, however, the BBC *did* publish an update, though it's never made it onto their Home page, and has only ever been a minor item on their World page. It remains curious what interests the BBC, and what doesn't interest the BBC.

Wisconsin-- The Center Of The Political Universe For 2018?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 12 hours ago
I had the impression that even before Randy Bryce realized he could do the "impossible" and actually beat Paul Ryan in Wisconsin's southeast congressional district, he was willing to run and rally the base and turn out the vote in the district so that Democrats would go to the polls and vote in other elections, especially Tammy Baldwin's tough reelection campaign for U.S. Senate. One basic lesson the DCCC and DNC have steadfastly refused to learn-- or even understand-- is that when there are candidates down-ballot generating local enthusiasm and excitement, it helps candidates run... more »

Where has JonDon gone?

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 12 hours ago
Regular readers of this blog will, perhaps, be interested in the latest Jon Donnison news. I just heard him on *PM *reporting on the Uber story. Yes, the great man has abandoned his beloved Gazan shore and his *far*-from-beloved Australian shore and been posted back to Blighty. I'm sure he'll be his usual 'impartial' self in London (and, yes, that's sarcasm).
