Charlottesville: A step in our long arc toward justice
Derek W. Black, Professor of Law, University of South Carolina at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 14 minutes ago
The number and exuberance of white nationalists who descended on Charlottesville sent emotional tremors through the nation. Some worried that this was the beginning of an expanding movement that would hearken us back to darker times. And many felt that President Donald Trump’s comments only made matters worse. The president’s implied moral equivalency between racist elements and counterprotesters emboldened the former: David Duke, a white nationalist leader and former KKK grand wizard, thanked the president for his “honesty” and willingness to “condemn the leftist terrorists.” As... more »

It Looks Like China Wants To Grab More Islands In The South China Sea
*Steve Mollman, Quartz:* *China’s latest moves in the South China Sea have sparked fears of a new land grab* In 2012, China wrested control of Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea from the Philippines. With the shoal—reefs, rocks, and a vast lagoon—located just 220 km (137 miles) from the Philippines’ main island Luzon, the incident heightened tensions and embarrassed Manila, which the following year opened a case in an international tribunal challenging Beijing’s territorial moves in the sea. So alarm bells went off earlier this month when Chinese ships gathered at Sandy Cay,... more »

Stealth War: F-23 Stealth Fighter vs. the F-22 Raptor (Who Wins?)
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * A battle like no other. *The final operational version of the F-23 would have offered much better range than the Raptor—especially at supersonic speeds—especially if powered by the YF120. That would have come in handy over the Pacific. It would also have been stealthier and it would have been almost as maneuverable as the Raptor—or possibly more so at different speeds and altitudes.* In 1991, Lockheed won the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) competition and went on to develop the stealthy world beating F-22 Raptor air superiority fighter. The X-32 Fighter: The Plane That Could Have Taken the Place of the F-35
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * Boeing could have landed a big prize. *One of the main reasons why Lockheed Martin’s design was selected over Boeing’s was because the X-32’s direct lift system—which uses engine thrust to lift the aircraft—is prone to pop stalls. That’s a phenomenon where hot exhaust gases are reingested into the engine causing a power loss. There were also questions as to whether the engine would be powerful enough to lift a fully operational F-32—the prototype had to have parts removed to ensure it would fly. It probably didn’t help Boeing’s case that it had to r... more »

Nursing Home Residents Rescued from Harvey Floodwaters
Residents at a Texas nursing home were airlifted to safety by helicopter after being trapped by Harvey's floodwaters.
"They'll be safe. Good luck."
Famous last words from the Slanderer in Chief as he scuttled off to Cape David for yet another mini vacation. The lead photo was taken this weekend in Houston and is going viral. This is a nursing home after the record flooding in the Lone Star state as Hurricane Harvey continues to rage across it. There are several reasons why Katrina is trending on Twitter and this, I suspect, is one of them. Remember hearing that horror story when Katrina hit Louisiana almost exactly 12 years ago, the one in which the staff had completely abandoned nursing home residents (although the owner... more »

The Palin family finally got a little more attention by pimping out Willow wearing a stupid MAGA swimsuit.
This picture was included in some Daily Mail article about stupid women who support Donald Trump by getting men to stare at their bodies. Willow is only one of the sad little creatures featured in the piece which also includes former talk show ranter Tomi Lahren, talk radio gals, chicks holding guns, girls in front of flags, woman flashing her crotch, and assorted airheads. All in all I think it is supposed to fire up support for Trump, for me however it just reminds me of how damaged the American gene pool is these days.
Keeping a Low Profile
I was amused to see that Sheriff Joe Arpaio was in trouble for “profiling”, something which for unknown reasons is anathema in the US. The Israelis are not suicidally stupid on this subject like the US is. The Israelis assume, for example, that the people who are most likely to carry a bomb on their…
Trump Pardons Arpaio, Who Didn't Meet the Justice Dept. Guidelines for Pardon
Korte, Gregory (2017, August 27). Trump's Arpaio Pardon a Breach. USA Today, A1: "Arpaio didn't meet the Justice Department guidelines for a pardon. His conviction was less than five years ago, he hadn't expressed remorse, and he hadn't even applied to the Office of the Pardon Attorney" Trump feels that he is above the law. His conduct epitomizes the arbitrary consolidation of power in the executive branch, a process that is antithetical to democracy. Trump supporters are deluded if they do not recognize the man's contempt for civil liberties and due process. See my previous p... more »

*"Why Am I Doing This?"* by Michael Krieger "Those of you who’ve read me for many years will have undoubtedly noticed a major transformation in the tone and content of my writing over the course of 2017. This shift has been the result of much personal introspection regarding how I had been doing things in the past and whether I was pleased with the outcome. "Supervolcano Alert!"
*"Supervolcano Alert!"* by Robert Gore "Thar she blows! Once every 600,000 years or so Yellowstone’s supervolcano erupts, making Mt. St. Helens, Pinatubo, and Krakatoa look like firecrackers. It blankets thousands of miles around it in lava and ash, casting a pall over the earth that lowers temperatures and hinders plant life for decades. Compared to Mother Nature we anthropogenic climate changers (if we are that) are pikers. Interestingly enough, that supervolcano is due for another eruption. Interestingly enough, so too is another supervolcano, one constructed entirely by humans.... more »
