The world is searching – will we protect ourselves? Multiple federal agencies are involved, including the CIA and the National Security Agency, and even friendly nations. These latest disclosures also remind us of the cybersecurity truism that any electronic device connec... more »

WikiLeaks: CIA Cyber "Weapons" Are Loose in the Wild
[image: wikileaks-cia-cyber-weapons-are-loose-in-the-wild] Leaked documents published by WikiLeaks Tuesday show that show that the CIA — in a move reminiscent of the Keystone Kops — “lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal,” allowing it to fall into the hands of hackers who have even less moral constraint than the CIA (if that were possible). These cyber "weapons" should never have been developed in the first place; now they are loose in the wild.
Czech Government Seeks Armed Citizenry to Fight Terror
[image: alex-newman-czech-gun-laws-fight-terror]VIDEO - Alex Newman, foreign correspondent for The New American, digs into the recent developments in the Czech Republic’s gun laws. A tsunami of immigrants flooding into Europe has allowed a significant number of Muslim terrorists and jihadists in to the EU. One way of dealing with the threat offered by Czech authorities is to adopt a constitutional amendment allowing citizens to bear arms not only in defense of themselves — a right that is already protected — but also in defense of the state. However, some analysts have speculated th... more »

Tribes set up tipis by the Washington Monument for the massive Standing Rock march
Members of American Indian tribes from around the country are gathering in Washington for four days of protests against Dakota Access oil pipeline that will culminate with a Friday march on the White House. Starting Tuesday, tribal members and supporters plan to camp each day on the National Mall, with teepees, a ceremonial fire, cultural workshops and speakers. Native American leaders also plan to lobby lawmakers to protect tribal rights. On Friday, a march of about 2 miles is planned from the Army Corps of Engineers office to the White House, where a rally is scheduled. Organizer... more »
New EPA Head Stacks Agency With Climate Sceptics
By Paul Homewood http://www.thegwpf.com/new-epa-head-stacks-agency-with-climate-sceptics/ Good news from GWPF: Days after the Senate confirmed him as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt appeared at the Conservative Political Action Conference and was asked about addressing a group that probably wanted to eliminate his agency. “I think it’s justified,” he responded, to cheers. Something new: A journal publishes running tally of retractions
Here’s something we haven’t seen before: A journal based in Serbia recently began listing all the articles it has retracted, all due to plagiarism. Although preventing plagiarism is hardly a new goal for journals, creating a web page dedicated to retractions is certainly a novel attempt. (Even the home page has a link to the page, called […] The post Something new: A journal publishes running tally of retractions appeared first on Retraction Watch.

Maintaining My Sanity
People often ask me how I maintain my sanity doing the work I do in these very crazy times. One way is by watching basketball and baseball - even though these sports have been taken over by corporate *$$$$* - but that is a subject for another day. My basketball team is the Washington Wizards (formerly the Baltimore Bullets) - I was born in Maryland. The Wizards recently made a trade and brought in Bojan Bogdanovic and he has fast become my favorite player on a otherwise often hapless team. Since his arrival Bogdanovic has saved the team from certain loss several times. This on... more »
Proof of RH from Hurwitz eigenstates
Under my previous (QM-on-graphs) blog post about the Riemann Hypothesis, Dilaton was forgiven for having brought us some cute internet banalities ;-) while Akhmeteli pointed out a paper that seems even more promising than my most recent specific attacks: Hamiltonian for the zeros of the Riemann zeta function In their PRL paper, Carl M. Bender, Dorje C. Brody, and Markus P. Müller (BBM) actually constructed a Hamiltonian whose eigenvalues seem to be the zeroes of the zeta function and that seems to be Hermitian, after some straightforward change of the metric. How does it work? ... more »
Is Trump A New Carter?
Conservative commentator Ross Douthat argues in this morning's *New York Times* that Donald Trump may be another Jimmy Carter: But with the release of the House Republican “replacement” (I use that term loosely) for Obamacare, it’s worth returning to the analogy. It rests, in part, on the work of the political scientist Stephen Skowronek, who argues that certain presidencies are “disjunctive” — straddling a political order passing into history and another one struggling to be born. And “disjunctive” generally means ineffective, because the parties such presidents are leading are ... more »

Miscellaneous material for your mid-week reading. - Chris Dillow examines a few of the reasons why neoliberalism hasn't produced the promise of economic growth as the supposed benefit in exchange for dissolving social links. And William Berkson discusses the importance of an activist government in building a strong economy: The new books on the history of the growth of economies all have different focuses. But they have the same critically important policy implication: While the *short-term* impact of government spending is difficult to disentangle from other factors, government inv... more »
Did The Far Right Render Ryan's Health Care Repeal Dead On Arrival?
A brand new Monmouth poll, found that 51% of Americans said they would prefer to keep the Affordable Care Act and work to improve it, with another 7% saying they want to keep the ACA entirely intact. That's 58%, while only 39% want to see the ACA repealed, either with a replacement (31%) or repealed entirely without a replacement, the Freedom Caucus' preferred outcome (8%). Just as that poll was being released yesterday, Mike Lee (R-UT) was at odds with the House Republican leadership's talking points, pointing out that Ryan's bill "is exactly the type of backroom dealing and rus... more »

*Sebastien Robin, National Interest:* *Why the U.S. Navy Fears Russia's Akula-Class Submarines (Stealthy with Lots of Firepower)* The Soviet Union produced hot-rod submarines that could swim faster, take more damage, and dive deeper than their American counterparts—but the U.S. Navy remained fairly confident it had the Soviet submarines outmatched because they were all extremely noisy. Should the superpowers clash, the quieter American subs had better odds of detecting their Soviet counterparts first, and greeting them with a homing torpedo. However, that confidence was dented in ... more »

Evidence of Ancient Megalithic Culture in Massachusetts Revealed For the First Time
Not quite the first time as Barry Fell wrote books on all this about thirty years ago. He was of course roundly ignored by archeology and that continues to hold. However this work reveals a vastly more expansive presence than Fell had imagined. This geography was occupied and concurrently with the population in Megalithic Europe that built Stonehenge. It was also secure as well. Those mountains provided an effective western barrier against excessive invasions from anyone. This presence actually extended much further south into the Hudson valley as well, but security may well ... more »
