America’s Political System Thrives on Corruption

Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle as well as presidential administrations of both parties are frequently guilty of unduly favoring the desires of their Big Money donors over the needs of their constituents. One must live in the middle of contradiction, because if all contradiction were eliminated at once life would collapse. There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. NYC subway banned dogs unless they fit in a bag, so these owners got creative.
When New York City decided to implement policies to ban large dogs from the subway system, pet parents decided to take things into their own hands. The rule stated that dogs must fit into a bag to be deemed travel worthy in the underground. Challenge accepted. On the surface it seemed that any dog over 10 pounds would not make the cut, but these every resourceful city dwellers beat the system in the best way. “No person may bring any animal on or into any conveyance or facility unless enclosed in a container.” But the rules say nothing about the size of the animal, some people ar... more »

Details about the man who attacked the British Parliament on March 22, identified by London police as British national Khalid Masood, are still emerging. With three victims confirmed dead, the attack is the worst in London since the July 7, 2005 bombings on the London transport system. A day after the attack, the Islamic State media organization Amaq released a statement claiming responsibility. The statement read: “The attacker yesterday in front of the British Parliament was a soldier of the Islamic state.” The language of the statement can help us understand the nature of not j... more »

The seven female and one male bison are from the Yellowstone National Park bloodline, which are among the few pure herds remaining. The historic transfer will further the Bronx wildlife park’s long history of facilitating bison conservation projects in the western U.S., and marks the first time bison have been transferred by a tribe to a wildlife park. Artist's impression of a quasar shining through a galaxy's 'super halo' of hydrogen gas. A. Angelich (NRAO/AUI/NSF), CC BY-ND How does a galaxy like our own Milky Way form? Until now there’s been a lot of inferring involved in answering that question. The basic story is that gas collects toward the center of roughly spherical “halos” of matter. The gas then cools, condenses, fragments and eventually collapses to form stars. Generations of stars build up the galaxy and with it the production of heavy elements – such as carbon, oxygen and so on – that populate our periodic table and c... more »

People with cystic fibrosis suffer repeated lung infections because their airway mucus is too thick and sticky to keep bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens from causing chronic infection. How mucus becomes abnormal in cystic fibrosis airways has never been fully understood, but a new study has determined that mucin proteins, which give mucus its gel-like properties, fail to unfold normally in cystic fibrosis airways, making airway mucus much more thick and sticky than it would be otherwise. What mathematical thinking looks like and why schools should teach it
Go to the Character of the Mathematical Thought list... A week ago, Doug K. sent me an essay Why We Should Reduce Skills Teaching in the Math Class by Dr Keith Devlin, a British American set theorist and mathematics teacher. Like many postmodern promoters of feel-good education, Devlin argues that we should reduce the teaching of all hard mathematics at school. After all, almost no one actually needs mathematics in his life so it's fine. This change will reduce the math anxieties and math phobia in the society, make the world a better place, and so on. At the same time, most peopl... more »
Using the placenta to understand how complex organs evolve

Developing lizard embryo beneath placental tissues. Oliver Griffith, CC BY-ND Considering how different they look from the outside, it might be surprising that all vertebrates – animals with a backbone – share the same, conserved set of organs. Chickens, fish, human beings – all have hearts, livers, brains, kidneys and so on. Each of these organs performs a specialized set of functions. On the inside, most vertebrates have a similar set of organs, inherited from a common ancestor. Thomas Wallace. Impressionistic view of The Day After
These are just personal impressions. They’re offered in the true spirit of ‘views my own’ . When all you hear from our MPs is: “we won’t let the terrorists win. We’ll carry on our daily business as usual” you might not expect torrents of cliches belched out in churchy, reverential tones by MPs of all shapes and sizes to totally occupy parliamentary business for a whole morning. Get on with parliamentary business then, why don’t you? Theresa May set an (almost) appropriate tone, which was quite enough. China Warned US Bomber During 'Routine' East China Sea Flyover
*Reuters*: *China says U.S. should respect China's air defense zone* China said on Thursday the United States should respect its air defense identification zone (ADIZ), after CNN reported China had warned a U.S. bomber it was illegally flying inside China's self-declared zone in the East China Sea. China declared the zone, in which aircraft are supposed to identify themselves to Chinese authorities, in the East China Sea in 2013, which the United States and Japan have refused to recognize. While most of the mainstream (i.e. the "real media") focussed on the State Department and its foreknowledge of the Benghazi attack, in fact, another document shows how the... more »

A Small, Cautious Budget
Kevin Page writes that yesterday's budget was not a history making event: From a fiscal vantage point, Budget 2017 was a very small event. There’s about $6 billion in new federal resources cumulatively planned for the next six years. By comparison, Budget 2016 allocated about $11.5 billion in new resources in year one, rising to $14.5 billion in year two. The Liberals are still going to run deficits, but they're investing in nothing new and nothing big. Infinity and beyond
The one important insight that i want to share is that all this is about mathematical infinity and is very much a rigorous thought experiment. The problem though is that it has become somewhat embedded in our mathematics and in the calculus in particular and this then blindly travels over into empirical applications. For example, mathematical continuity as a rigorous concept depends on mathematical infinity. All this leads to rigorous mathematics that has a real potential to fail in the empirical world and does. As it turns out the idea of empirical infinity is* extremely import... more »

In May, Montana Voters Get A Chance To Send Trump A Message-- Either "Slow Down, Crazy Man" Or "Punch Us Again"
I've heard a lot of good stuff about Rob Quist from friends in Montana, where he's the Democratic candidate to replace the state's sole member of the House, Ryan Zinke, recently confirmed by a rubber stamp Senate as the Trump Regime Interior Secretary. His opponent is far, far right extremist Greg Gianforte, who was recently defeated when he ran for Montana governor. Although Trump won Montana that day by nearly 100,000 votes-- 274,120 (56.5%) to 174,521 (36.0%), Gianforte was defeated by the same voters, 250,846 (50.2%) to 232,080 (46.4%). Over 40,000 Trump voters just couldn't ... more »

Marlene Mosqueda's father was arrested by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement in February. AP Photo/Nick Ut, File Although it is difficult to get exact numbers, some estimates show Immigration and Customs Enforcement home raids have never resulted in more than 30,000 apprehensions in any given year. At that rate, it could take 366 years for immigration agents to remove all 11 million undocumented migrants using home raids. I contend immigration raids are not intended to deport large numbers of people. Instead, my research has shown that they are primarily effective in spreadin... more »
Why polls seem to struggle to get it right – on elections and everything else
Daniel Alexander, Professor of Mathematics, Drake University at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 1 day ago
Where are the people really going? kewl/flickr, CC BY I am a professor of mathematics, so my ears perk up when I hear someone say that polls seem inaccurate. The public understandably focuses on polling results and how much these results seem to vary. Take two presidential approval polls from March 21. Polling firm Rasmussen Reports reported that 50 percent of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s performance, while, that same day, Gallup stated that only 37 percent do. In late February, the website FiveThirtyEight listed 18 other presidential approval polls in which Trump’... more »
Germany puts the UK government to shame with strong action over Turkish taunts
