Is Objectivist Community Being Wrecked by Trolls?
In the social media I am noticing an alarming rise in incidences of trolling and bad behaviour by certain people who pretend that they are the "only true-followers" of Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism. But they have very little knowledge of philosophy, and they are incapable of holding a logical discussion. Their method of argumentation consists of badgering their adversary into silence. To expose and denounce such disorderly and unethical conduct, I made this post on my Facebook page. I reproduce it here: *Ayn Rand’s philosophy is the philosophy of reason and individualism, but... more »

Tooth be told: Millions of years of evolutionary history mark those molars
Debbie Guatelli-Steinberg, Professor of Anthropology, The Ohio State University at Science + Technology – The Conversation - 1 hour ago
Upper teeth of a Neanderthal who lived about 40,000 years ago. Debbie Guatelli-Steinberg, CC BY-NC “Show me your teeth and I’ll tell you who you are.” These words, attributed to 19th-century naturalist George Cuvier, couldn’t be more correct. The pearly whites we use every day over and over and over again are clues not just to our own individual lives but also to our evolutionary history. Teeth lock into their physical structure remarkable detail about the creatures whose mouths they’re in, whether our own or those of our ancient ancestors. Fossil teeth are tiny time capsules that p... more »
The IMF Should Be Worried On What Is Happening In Ukraine Right Now
*Leonid Bershidsky, Bloomberg*: *What the IMF Doesn't Know About Ukraine* The conflict between Ukraine and Russia entered a new phase on Wednesday. The separatist, pro-Russian "people's republics" of eastern Ukraine announced they were taking over Ukrainian oligarchs' assets on their territory. Few people outside Ukraine know that throughout the three-year hostilities, these factories and mines paid Ukrainian taxes, and their output was counted toward Ukraine's gross domestic product. If the takeover stands, Ukraine won't see the predicted economic growth. Unlike the military acti... more »

During his campaign for president, Trump returned again and again to his supposed success as a businessman and promised government programs “under budget and ahead of schedule.” His hotel in Washington would be “a metaphor for what we can accomplish for this country.” The qualities Trump sees in himself are what he seems have been looking for in his Cabinet. Are Puerto Ricans really American citizens?

AP Photo/Danica Coto In a recent poll, 41 percent of respondents said they did not believe that Puerto Ricans were U.S. citizens, and 15 percent were not sure. Only 43 percent answered that Puerto Ricans were U.S. citizens. Today, being born in Puerto Rico is tantamount to being born in the United States. WABI-SABI
The Japanese philosophy called *Wabi-Sabi* is about noticing beauty in the 'naturally imperfect world'. For the Zen Buddhists, "wabi" is something that is simple and humble, and "sabi" means something that is not perfect. Wabi translates to 'less is more'. Wabi-Sabi means appreciating a quiet rainy day and the impermanence of all things. In the 'perfect' game of golf you get a 'hole in one' at every hole? That could get boring. The advantage of adopting Wabi-Sabi is that it might make us less stressed. "A wabi sabi relationship is one in which you deliberately accept each ... more »

The joys of shredding paper
The great thing I’ve discovered with shredding old files is that because they get bulked up in the shredder, it looks like you’ve done a lot more work than you have. The highlight was shredding the whole Scottish executive (a … Continue reading →
O'Leary Doesn't Get It
Kevin O'Leary skipped the last Conservative leadership debate. Instead, he held his own event at a near by hotel. Brent Rathgeber writes that, more than anything else, O'Leary's no show shows that O'Leary is profoundly ignorant about how politics work: O’Leary claims he boycotted the debate because the format, with all the candidates on stage at once, was unproductive and boring. The people I talked to in Edmonton weren’t buying it; they said O’Leary stayed away because it was a bilingual event and he didn’t want more exposure for his lousy French. (He needn’t have worried; apart ... more »
Trump Should Expand Audits of Programs That Waste Taxpayers' Funds
[image: trump-should-expand-audits-of-programs-that-waste-taxpayers-funds] Cutting regulations is great, but it's just one small part of the battle. The large number of improper payments by government agencies is another area that could use the president's attention, with the worst culprit being the Medicare fee-for-service system.

The Type Of Democrats We Need... And The Type We Don't
Yesterday the *Maine Beacon* reported that 8 *Democrats*-- 2 in the state Senate and 6 in the House-- signed on to Paul LePage's plan to roll back a just-passed minimum wage increase. And by "signed on," I mean co-sponsoring a bill that would target restaurant workers. What LePage, his GOP allies and those 8 Democrats want to do is overturn the voter-approved ballot measure, which won in November 417,132 (55.5%) to 334,774 (44.5%). How big a deal are those numbers? Hillary won the state with 357,735, beating Trump's 335,593. Measure 4-- the minimum wage increase-- beat both candid... more »

*A home factory in Taichung* News came out early this week of a dried tofu factory that had held two migrant workers for 14 years... Kaohsiung police raided a dried tofu factory and rescued four migrant workers who had been locked inside on the second floor of the factory for up to 14 years and forced to work 15 hours every day. The factory was fined a massive $1.2 million NT, or about $40,000, for stealing nearly 30 years from two people. Outrageous. BUT WHAT WILL TURN THE RUSSIA NEWS INTO A REAL CRISIS FOR THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION?
Then-senator and Trump surrogate Jeff Sessions met twice with Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak during the presidential campaign, then lied about this under oath during his confirmation hearings before becoming attorney general, *The Washington Post* reports. This seems really bad for Sessions, but the right assures us it's all innocent. Yes, Sessions flatly denied any contact with Russian officials, which means he dishonestly answered the question he was asked in a Senate hearing, but we're told he *honestly* answered the question *he thought* he was being asked, so it's cool. Manbij Conjuncture- Russia Makes a Deal
US-backed Kurdish forces agree to hand over key area to Syrian government *I do not believe the PKK/YPG made this deal to protect civilians. It’s far more likely the airstrikes that occured on Monday and the casualties they took fighting were the impetus for the deal.. Perhaps the Kurdish terror clan isn’t such an effective fighting force when the US hasn’t dropped a pile of bombs (softening) on the locale first?* * I also question the claims of the Kurds flying the flags ONLY as a ruse entirely- It is well known US, British special forces operate amongst the PKK/YPG. Consumption Vortex And The Terrifying Mathematics Of The Anthropocene
Here are some surprising facts about humans’ effect on planet Earth. We have made enough concrete to create an exact replica of Earth 2mm thick. We have produced enough plastic to wrap Earth in clingfilm. We are creating “ technofossils”, a new term for congealed human-made materials – plastics and concretes – that will be around for tens of millions of years. But it is the scale that humans have altered Earth’s life support system that is the most concerning. read more

Karl Mannheim on the Death of Utopia
Thought that this was quite an arresting passage in *Ideology and Utopia*. Sounds very now: ... where the decline of ideology represents a crisis only for certain strata, and the objectivity which comes from unmasking ideologies always takes the form of self-calrification for society as a whole, the complete disappearance of the utopian element from human thought and action would mean human nature and human development would take on a totally new character. The disappearance of utopia brings about a static state of affairs in which man himself becomes no more than a thing. We could ... more »
