"A gorgeous spiral galaxy some 100 million light-years distant, NGC 1309 lies on the banks of the constellation of the River (Eridanus). NGC 1309 spans about 30,000 light-years, making it about one third the size of our larger Milky Way galaxy. Bluish clusters of young stars and dust lanes are seen to trace out NGC 1309's spiral arms as they wind around an older yellowish star population at its core. *Click image for larger size.* Not just another pretty face-on spiral galaxy, observations of NGC 1309's recent supernova and Cepheid variable stars contribute to the calibration of the... more »

Grassroots Democrats Desperately Need To Radicalize Their Centrist Congressional Representatives
I live in Los Feliz, which is part of an overwhelmingly blue congressional district in Los Angeles, CA-28. The PVI is D+20 and the GOP doesn't bother running candidates here. Obama beat Romney 187,441 (70.3%) to 70,757 (26.5%) and Hillary beat Trump by an even stronger margin-- 72.1% to 22.3%. You would think a district like this would have a bold progressive champion, someone like our neighbors, Ted Lieu, Xavier Becerra, or Judy Chu. But, our congressman, Adam Schiff, is a relatively conservative member of Congress for this blue a district. ProgressivePunch rates him a "D," not ... more »
The Case To Build More U.S. Mini-Aircraft Carriers
*Popular Mechanics:* *John McCain's Plan Calls for More Mini-Aircraft Carriers. Here's What He's Talking About.* *We already have them.* In his blueprint for increased defense spending released last week, Senator John McCain, head of the Senate Armed Services Committee, recommends building what he calls a high/low mix of aircraft carriers. The high end we already have. These are the Nimitz and now Ford-class of supercarriers. But what is the low end of the mix, and what would it look like? It would look like ships we have now. "The Supreme Paradox"
*"The Supreme Paradox"* by Robert Ardrey ․ "Man is a fraction of the animal world… We are not so unique as we should like to believe. The problem of man’s original nature imposes itself upon any human solution. Amity – as Darwin guessed but did not explore – is as much a product of evolutionary forces as contest and enmity. In the evolution of any social species including the human, natural selection places as heavy a penalty on failure in peace as failure in battle. ․ A certain justification has existed until now, in my opinion, for submission of the insurgent specialists to the cen... more »
Runaway Global Warming ended the Ice Age
Mike Haseler, also known as blogger the Scottish Sceptic, has issued a Press Release claiming that he has found evidence that a massive increase in volcanic activity at the end of the ice-age triggered runaway global warming turning the earth from a frozen wasteland in the flourishing interglacial landscape we see today. This volcanic activity he claims was caused by a runaway chain of events. First, a small change in earth’s orbit caused warming of the earth’s surface and crust. The crust then expanded forcing huge volumes of carbon containing rock to be forced down into the hot m... more »

Gun advocates believe that they have the right to carry firearms pretty much anywhere -- and one pro-gun legislator in Florida believes this so much that he wants to infringe on Floridians' right *not* to have guns at the businesses they run. At *National Review,* gun blogger Andrew Branca explains: A new proposal would hold store owners responsible for the mayhem that results when they decide to ban guns on their premises.... What is wrong in the slogan — "Love thy neighbor as thyself"
Here's an excerpt from the letter that Ayn Rand wrote to Rose Wilder Lane on November 3, 1946: About “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” You are right that one of the troubles here lies in the world “love.” It’s certainly the wrong word, with no exact meaning in this particular slogan. That is the first reason why the slogan should be dropped. Any inexact statement of what purports to be a principle, creates nothing but harm. But whatever meaning we attempt to attach to this slogan—it still remains a tenet of collectivism. If “love” here means self-preservation, as you say, or the pro... more »

LHCb Finds Suppressed Lambda_B Decay
The so-called Lambda_b baryon is a well-studied particle nowadays, with several experiments having measured its main production properties and decay modes in the course of the past two decades. It is a particle made of quarks: three of them, like the proton and the neutron. Being electrically neutral, it is easily likened to the neutron, which has a quark composition "udd". In the space of quark configurations, the Lambda_b is in fact obtained by exchanging a down-type quark of the neutron with a bottom quark, getting the "udb" combination. read more

Why Eli Broad is opposed to Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education
By Tim Scott Eli Broad’s opposition to Betsy DeVos further exposes the current financialization model of education he and his peers maintain, which is based on funneling public funds to seed and support government protected/regulated (NCLB, RTTT, ESSA, etc) education markets. For insiders like Broad: (1) A voucher system that funds truly private and dispersed schools is too pure of a market-based model for venture philanthropists like Broad, who seek a cohesive standardized (universal) education system that is about social control as a means to maintain their neoliberal social or... more »
These Whales Exhaling Rainbows Are Unimaginably Beautiful
It may sound like something from the imagination of Lisa Frank, but caught in the right light, whales can exhale a rainbow. One of nature's most incredible and surprising phenomenons. According to Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary, the whales can hold their breath for up to 45 minutes, but usually surface every 7 to 15 minutes. Earlier this month, photographer Mark Girardeau and friend Jason Anderson captured drone footage of a humpback whale surfacing to exhale. Humpback whales actually have two blow holes located on the top of their heads, and when they breath out... more »

A No Win Situation From The Start

When You Normalize Your Demons
Some commentators have been surprised by the ascension of Donald Trump. Nick Cohen writes that they shouldn't be. Trump comes from the world of business. And, in the business world, his type has been in the driver's seat for sometime: The radical economist Chris Dillow once wrote that, while the fall of communism discredited the centrally planned economy, the centrally planned corporation, with the autocratic leader who tolerated no dissent, not only survived 1989, but blossomed. Dillow is not alone in worrying about the harm the little Hitlers of the corporation might bring. Si... more »

How Will We Know The Moment We Go From Not Fascist To Fascist? Like Canaries In A Coal Mine, Gays Will Be Among The First To Know
Robert Reich is a professor of public policy at UC, Berkeley. He was the token progressive in Bill Clinton's very centrist cabinet, where he served as Secretary of Labor. In 2002, he ran for governor of Massachusetts-- Clinton, angered by his book, *Locked in the Cabinet*, endorsed one of his primary rivals, someone who won less than 1% of the vote-- and came in second in a 5-way race. Reich, the unabashed, cutting-edge progressive in the race, lost out to an uninspiring, unelectable establishment hack, state Treasurer Shannon O'Brien, who took 243,039 votes to his 185,315. She ha... more »

Biggest march planned in Washington D.C. for Standing Rock on March 10th
The Standing Rock Sioux will soon march on Washington. On Wednesday, the tribe announced that the Rise With Standing Rock Native Nations March will happen in D.C. on March 10. That’s more than a month before the March for Science and the People’s Climate March. The news comes at a time of rising tensions among the Standing Rock Sioux and other water protecters who are fighting construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota. Meanwhile, a group of veterans continues to stand in solidarity with the Sioux, claiming, “That pipeline will not get completed. Not on our watch.”... more »
Climate scientists versus climate data
Originally posted on Climate Etc.: by John Bates A look behind the curtain at NOAA’s climate data center. I read with great irony recently that scientists are “frantically copying U.S. Climate data, fearing it might vanish under Trump” (e.g., Washington Post 13 December 2016). As a climate scientist formerly responsible for NOAA’s climate archive, the…

How to Drain the Judicial Swamp
[image: how-to-drain-the-judicial-swamp] It’s no surprise the Democrats plan to fight against the nomination of President Trump’s Supreme Court pick, 10th Circuit Court of Appeals judge Neil Gorsuch. There are no confirmation battles like Supreme Court confirmation battles because, as we always hear, such a decision can “shape the country for a generation.” But this doesn’t sound like the role envisioned by the founders.
Ukraine's Flare Up Not Just About Putin: Poroshenko's Gambit
*Poroshenko's Gambit- Bloomberg* *First 6 paragraphs omitted. * This isn't a major Russian military push. Reports from the area *do not* point to a heavy presence of Russian troops, which have come in at decisive points in the conflict. Russia *only appeared* to threaten that kind of retaliation in a Foreign Ministry statement reminding Ukraine "how such adventures ended for them in the past." The statement went on to accuse Poroshenko of provoking the escalation to keep the crisis "on the international agenda," perhaps referring to his blaming of the fighting for cutting short a h... more »

A new book by a well-known doctor is clearing the fog surrounding living with dementia
A new book by a well-known doctor is challenging long-held preconceptions regarding the care of dementia patients. It sets out to challenge care and support surrounding a whole host of areas. These include mental health, spirituality, sexuality and “dying well”. And the author’s own personal story is worthy of a book, too. As it’s one […] The post A new book by a well-known doctor is clearing the fog surrounding living with dementia appeared first on The Canary.
Cooperation with Russia and Damascus Is Turkey’s Only Chance
*I’ve been saying cooperation is a must for a very long time now..* Sputnik In a recent article for the Turkish newspaper Aydinlik, Ismail Hakki Pekin, former chief of the Turkish General Staff Intelligence Department, warned that Turkey is moving step by step to war. In an interview with Sputnik Turkiey, Pekin commented on his assumption, saying that Ankara has found itself in a difficult situation, particularly due to foreign pressure. *"The United States and Egypt are trying to force Turkey to make certain concessions, including establishing a Kurdish autonomous region in norther... more »

Quebec Mosque Shooting: MSM Employs Fake News Meme to Present More Fake News
*CBC* and *Global *both happen, coincidentally, to be running obfuscating/ fake news about their own faked/obfuscating news overage regarding the Quebec Mosque incident. I don’t want to spend too much time debunking this crap. Every media outlet was rated as significantly more trustworthy than Señor and the *Washington Post* the most so. 52% of respondents said the *Post* has more credibility than Trumpanzee and 41%-- presumably the low-IQ, prescription-drug abusing neanderthals who voted for him-- said Trumpanzee has more credibility.
