Is concern about pesticides around schools a racial issue? Lobbyists for agrochemical corporations would like you to think it's a "local v. outsider" thing. It's a perfect distraction from the real issues.
In one way, however, it is a racial issue: It's often poorer, disenfranchised communities that suffer the worst from corporations "externalizing" their environmental impacts, and it's these communities' children that are paying for it with their health.

The Governor's office has been asked to open up an independent investigation of the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and the head of their Pesticides Branch, Thomas Matsuda, for withholding positive test results of multiple homes in Paia, Maui from the Senate Committee last year.
The Governor's office has been asked to open up an independent investigation of the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and the head of their Pesticides Branch, Thomas Matsuda, for withholding positive test results of multiple homes in Paia, Maui from the Senate Committee last year.
Withholding those positive test results could have affected the outcome of the Buffer Zone bill last year. In addition, According to Scott Enright (Director of the Department of Agriculture) Thomas Matsuda failed to inform him of the fact that multiple homes on Maui were contaminated with a cocktail of herbicides and Restricted Use Pesticides. He even kept his boss in the dark for almost 2 years....why is that?
Hopefully Governor Ige will do the right thing and immediately order an investigation into the Department.

The Internal Revenue Service has disgraced itself.
The IRS is the last remaining watchdog over the remnants of our tattered system for limiting big money in politics. The agency is supposed to ensure that non-profit entities – which, because of their non-profit status, don’t have to disclose donors – are not simply political front groups disguising themselves as “social welfare” organizations in order to keep their donors secret.
But today the Center for Responsive Politics reports that the IRS has granted “social welfare” status to Karl Rove’s “Crossroads GPS.” This is absurd. Since 2010, Crossroads GPS has spent tens of millions of secret dollars on campaign ads to elect Republicans to Congress. If Crossroads GPS is a “social welfare” organization, Ted Cruz is a socialist. Obviously, the IRS has been so intimidated by congressional Republicans that it will now let any political front group claim “social welfare” status in order to hide political funders.
The IRS has abdicated its responsibility. The only way we get big money out of politics is with fundamental reform -- full disclosure of all sources of funding, public financing of elections, an end to the revolving door, and reversal of "Citizens United."
"The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has sabotaged the public trust and violated the public interest by also ignoring stacks of documented evidence that fracking poses a major risk to drinking water supplies."
Barack Obama and Governor Tom Wolf, how many Pennsylvania families does fracking need to harm before you pay attention?
"CNN Money" just ran this analysis. The mainstream media has run so many editorials and oped pieces bashing Bernie's policies that I thought you might find this useful as a counterweight. What do you think?
Still waiting for it to trickle down?

- So far in the 2016 election, the 100 biggest donors have contributed $195 million ― more than the $155 million contributed by the two million smallest donors combined (according to an analysis of campaign data by “Politico.”) The five Republican members of the Supreme Court who in “Citizens United” contended they were protecting the First Amendment rights of Americans were obviously doing no such thing. They were drowning the First Amendment rights of the vast majority. The top twenty are below. (The “Politico” article lists all 100.) They have not donated out of the goodness of their hearts, or their concern for a better America. These are investments -- no different from their other investments. If their candidates win, they will get substantial returns.

"Imagine something like an ‘automation tax’ that companies would pay for each job replaced by a machine - and then you are already on the way out of ‘capitalism as we know it’ and towards a an income guarantee. And this is, btw, not at all about a new form of socialism - it’s about creating a future society that makes sense for humans, not for machines (see www.techvshuman.com
3 things come together as technology is gearing up to do most of our work: a) cost of living should decline over time b) the amount of time people work should decline c) the gig / freelance / on-demand economy will explode
In this fundamental change progress, cities, local and national governments must invest as much in people as they invest in technology, imho - i.e. each dollar spent on using technology to replace people must be at least partly put back into creating a flourishing society and allowing for human happiness (i.e. to move up the Maslow pyramid)"
