Brazil have announced plans to tackle the Zika virus outbreak by unleashing gamma rays on millions of male mosquitoes in order to sterilise them and stop the spread of the virus. A Swedish doctor has been jailed for 10 years for kidnapping a woman and locking her up in a home-made bunker. The 38-year-old physician was planning to keep the woman as his girlfriend. At least one person has died following the collapse of a building at Didcot power station in in Oxfordshire, UK. Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue service have confirmed one person has died, five are injured and three are missing in the blast Witnesses reported hearing a massive blast at the site before part of the building collapsed. The chocolate giant Mars has recalled Snickers and Mars bars in 55 countries. The move came after a piece of plastic found in one bar was traced back to its Dutch factory. The company initially issued a recall in Germany, but it is believed to have spread to the UK, France, Belgium, Italy and Spain. Denmark just took a major step to eliminate food waste by opening their first ever food surplus supermarket. The store called Wefood opened in the capital city Copenhagen and will sell produce at prices 30 to 50 per cent cheaper than normal supermarkets. Miniaturization has been with us for decades. In the 1980s (and, in the case of pioneers, 1970s), we had our first personal computers. They were getting smaller and more powerful. It was unavoidable that devices as small as smartphones would be vastly more powerful than my Commodore 64 in the 1980s (although Moore's law seemed too ambitious in recent years). When it was introduced less than a decade ago, the iPhone became a standard for the smartphones. Apple currently pockets over 90% of the world's profits from smartphones, a result I find incredible and hard to sympathize with.... more »

After a great night in Edmonton, I was once again up early Saturday morning for a shorter trip down to Calgary. This concert had been on my radar for a couple of months.
