Paper on Parade: Political Economy of Cross-Strait Relations: is Beijing’s patronage policy on Taiwanese business sustainable?
[image: Namaxia_1] *With the advent of the brutal cold, my daughter has implemented an organic lap warming system. * Bloomberg ran a story this week on Taiwanese businessmen who had been speculating in Yuan derivatives and got burned when the Chinese economy slumped. So many years of articles explaining that derivatives are a bad idea, and people are still buying them. But the loss was like a metaphor for dealing with China: initial gains, followed by steep costs... Time again for this blog's regularly irregular feature, Paper on Parade. Elijah Cummings Will Not Be Running For Senate In Maryland
In the last couple of days Republicans Reid Ribble or Wisconsin and Stephen Fincher of Tennessee have announced they won't be running for reelection. No loss-- in either case-- although, the corrupt, incompetent, basically moribund DCCC has no candidates in either district. For more interesting was an announcement from a far more accomplished congressman, Elijah Cummings (D-MD), filed to run again which is a big deal because it was thought he might run for the U.S. Senate, which would have been scary for Donna Edwards. Paul Craig Roberts claims Michael Hudson to be "the best economist in the world." I have always thought the two of them equal. Now I understand the difference to be that Roberts studied classical economics and put it to work back in the days of Ronald Reagan when the US government was still 'of the people, by the people, and for the people.' In contrast, Hudson did not plan to be an economist. However, having learned from a friend "the flow of funds through the economic system and explained how crises develop when debt outgrows the economy," He later "learned more economics from his work experience than from his Ph.D. courses," i.e., going to work on Wall Street and for several of the big banks, finding "...that Western economies have been financialized in a predatory way that sacrifices the public interest to the interests of the financial sector. That is why the economy no longer works for ordinary people. Finance is no longer productive. It has become a parasite on the economy."

Science skepticism is growing–for one good reason
Science skepticism is growing, and for one very good reason: Science and the bureaucratic state do not mix. Scientists in recent years have been getting so devoted to sucking off the public tit that public trust of public science is rapidly and deservedly diminishing. *The usual narrative in the science-communication literature [suggests Mises Institute’s Peter Klein] is that public skepticism toward "science" is rooted in ignorance and fear, that it reflects scientists' failure to engage the public with lively and convincing stories. But what if scientists deliberately mislead t... more »
Feb:2 No Irving press
I won't discuss the Irving press for today. It's just propaganda, ignorance and trivia. The one exception is the column by student columnist, Jana Giles. She's critical of online courses. I quite agree with her. Learning how to teach, and improving teaching, can only be done by face to face classes with discussion and reaction on both sides. And not just teachers and students, but teachers and students and other students. Teaching into a camera and learning from a screen destroy that essential contact for both sides. ________________________________________________________________... more »
Where is Hillary on Common Core and Charter Schools?
A clip from Ed Week (my bolds): 4. *Hillary Clinton is pro-Common Core.* At her first official campaign stop in Iowa, Clinton praised Common Core and called parents who misunderstand the value of the controversial academics "unfortunate." She also inserted the idea that education is a "non-family" entity in the U.S., and an important one. For what it's worth, I agree with Clinton. I've seen too many parents argue against Common Core because it is different from what they did as kids -- but isn't that the point? Iran’s Ties With Al Qaeda In Iraq’s Abu Musab al-Zarqawi
The history of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi the founder of Al Qaeda in Iraq has largely been written. He grew up as a petty criminal in Jordan, travelled to Afghanistan twice after the war with the Soviets was over and set up his own camp with the help of Al Qaeda, was imprisoned in Jordan, and eventually went to Iraq to fight the Americans. The one part of his life that has not been written about much was his two stints in Iran in 2001 and 2003 and his ties with the government there. Zarqawi originally began running his supply lines through Iran to his camp in Afghanistan, and later rece... more »

On To New Hampshire-- And Another Reason Hillary Should Drop Out And Endorse Bernie
A few years ago I read Elizabeth Warren's book, A Fighting Chance and I remember being very impressed with a story about how then First Lady Hillary Clinton had single-handedly turned around the Administration on a toxic brankuptcy bill and persuaded her husband to veto it at the very end of 2000. It actually made me feel good about Hillary. But, it turns out, I didn't actually have the full story. The banking industry bought everything; they even bought their own facts. The industry commissioned three different studies, each of which was touted as "independent." Each explained t... more »

A Lot Of Spitballs
There is a difference, Gerry Caplan writes, between a mere Member of Parliament and a Great Parliamentarian. Great Parliamentarians respect the institution. Members of Parliament are like the kid who hides a straw in his desk and uses it to shoot spitballs at his classmates. In the last parliament, the two biggest spitballers were Pierre Poilievre and Paul Calandra, who made a mockery of the House of Commons and their jobs on a daily basis. Let’s Practice “White Magic” in 2016

Are we Likely to see new Nation States Emerge this Century?
Possibly as we do have significant candidates that are obvious and have real support out there. They may even make sense and that certainly includes the Kurds as an example. I wonder if Herr Trumpf laying some greasy bills on a silver communion plate at a church he was using as a prop for his campaign yesterday was the last straw. It looks like the Our Principles PAC-funded voters guide that tens of thousands of homes got in the mail warning them that Herr Tr... more »
GOP Closet Case Aaron Schock Offered $1,000,000 To Star In A Series On Hardcore Gay Porn Films
Last month we took a look at the gay porn company that did a movie based loosely on the life and foibles of Republican congressional closet case Aaron Schock, Cauke For President. Now another gay porn house, TitanMen, wants to make a series of gay porno films *starring* Aaron. They're offering him as much as a million dollars. And Aaron needs that money as the legal bills for keeping him out of prison continue to mount. Although he has over half a million dollars left in his campaign account-- which he is allowed to use for his legal defense-- he already owes his attorneys at Jone... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"
"Have you ever seen the Man on the Moon? This common question plays on the ability of humans to see pareidolia- imagining familiar icons where they don't actually exist. The textured surface of Earth's full Moon is home to numerous identifications of iconic objects, not only in modern western culture but in world folklore throughout history. Examples, typically dependent on the Moon's perceived orientation, include the Woman in the Moon and the Rabbit in the Moon. *Click image for larger size.* One facial outline commonly identified as the Man in the Moon starts by imagining the two... more »

The Poet: Anne Sexton, "Courage"
*"Courage"* "It is in the small things we see it. The child's first step, as awesome as an earthquake. The first time you rode a bike, wallowing up the sidewalk. The first spanking when your heart went on a journey all alone. When they called you crybaby or poor or fatty or crazy and made you into an alien, you drank their acid and concealed it. Later, if you faced the death of bombs and bullets you did not do it with a banner, you did it with only a hat to cover your heart. You did not fondle the weakness inside you though it was there. Your courage was a small coal that you kept swallo... more »
"Perspective"
"There are some oddities in the perspective with which we see the world. The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 93 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be." - Douglas Adams
"The Invitation"
*"The Invitation"* "It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing. It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive. It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain! I want to know if you can sit with pain, mi... more »
"With Love... Leo"
*"With Love... Leo"* by Leo Buscaglia "Tonight I would like to talk to you about something really important to me. I'm constantly meeting people and working with people. And I'm becoming so very concerned because the people I meet are so wonderful and so beautiful, and yet they are afraid to show their wonder and show their beauty. They are in constant doubt about being beautiful and wonderful. If there is to be any hope for us as lovers, we've got to make sure to express this love and this caring and bring it out into the open and not be afraid. So tonight, I would like to talk ... more »
Black Hole
I ended 2015 with a pretty modest bird list and hope of surpassing that number for this year. February tends to be a bit of a black hole for me since by mid-January I've tended to see all of the usual suspects that over-winter and that tend to frequent the bird feeders in my yard. My list then tends to gather a bit of dust with very few additions until late-March or early April when either all the migrating species start to show up or the weather warms up and allows me to venture out a bit more. Overall, we've had a pretty tame winter so perhaps this year the February "black hole... more »
