Wow!
Chyskhaan – Lord of the Cold, brother of Father Frost from Yakutia The legend says he is responsible of keeping the cold confined to specific latitudes, to specific heights, and to specific land masses. He keeps the Arctic and the Antarctic pristine with cold and snow. At Yule, the longest night and shortest day, people in the north gathered at shrines built in his name, and offered gifts to him to take away the cold and to allow the sun to return. The gifts were left at the shrine. Chyskhaan would gather up the gifts and redistribute them to those that were in need, keeping for himself what he needed to honour the magic he would work over the next several months. His magic would chase away the night and bring forth the sun. At the same time, he controlled how quickly the ice and snow would melt in order to avoid flooding out the villages and people that depended on him.

Salt water and other contaminants in the sinkhole are inches away from seeping into the freshwater bayous nearby.
Assumption Parish officials fear the break in the berm could cause major environmental damage in the area, leaving them on high alert.
"It causes environmental risk for vegetation, trees, possibly fish and so forth. And that's what the containment is for, to keep the material in the sinkhole from getting out," said John Boudreaux.

But
Duval made no bones about his distaste for having to rule in favor of
the corps in the lawsuit, which focused especially on the failure of
floodwalls along the 17th Street and other outfall canals in New
Orleans.
“Often, when the King can do no wrong, his subjects suffer the consequences. Such is the case here,” he said.
"This story -- 50 years in the making -- is heart-wrenching," Duval said in his 46-page ruling. "Millions of dollars were squandered in building a levee system with respect to these outfall canals which was known to be inadequate by the corps' own calculations."

“Regulators shouldn’t have to be pressured into doing their job to protect people like me from drilling impacts. If what has happened to me is happening to others, I completely understand why communities across the country are voting to ban fracking and drilling.” ~ Shelly Perdue, Parker County resident with drilling-polluted drinking water

Another
aspect of the lawsuit against BP and Chevron targets their construction
of “unlined earthen waste pits,” which the lawsuit describes as “simply
holes, ponds or excavations” that are dug into either the ground or a
marsh. Many of those pits were never
properly closed, the suit says, adding that BP and Chevron did not even
attempt to obtain permits to close them. The lawsuit also alleges that
BP has been illegally dredging canals throughout the region for their
oil and gas activities, without the necessary permits.

Bill de Blasio is now Mayor of New York, whose residents include the world’s richest -- the captains of American industry, the titans of Wall Street. But also 52,000 homeless, of whom 22,000 are children – the highest level of homelessness since the Great Depression. New York is a microcosm of America. The Right sees nothing alarming about this degree of inequality, but it threatens the social fabric of our society, hobbles the economy, and undermines democracy. "We are called to put an end to economic and social inequalities that threaten to unravel the city we love," de Blasio said in his inaugural. "And so today, we commit to a new progressive direction in New York.” Does de Blasio’s election mark the beginning of a new progressive era similar in scope and achievement to the one that began in 1901, when another New Yorker, Teddy Roosevelt, became President of the United States?
I was going to make a "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" joke -- but this is actually really fascinating.
