Drugs War 8, Duterte government as drug fighter, or facilitator?

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 13 hours ago
While some 8,000 to 14,000 suspected drug users and small-time drug pushers have been murdered over the on-going drugs war of the Duterte government, there was not a single "big fish" drug lord and drug pusher who has been arrested. Well, two municipal Mayors and their friends, family members have been massacred over the past few months, suspected of being drug pushers in their areas. But they are not considered as "big fish" enough. The P6.4 billion worth of shabu that went through the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and was later raided at a warehouse in Valenzuela, not a single big pers... more »

* This is my article in BusinessWorld last September 27, 2017. “Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the worst airport in the world” is a cliché that we often hear and read. But how true is this statement based on quantitative and technical criteria? I have not seen technical reports on this yet but for this piece, I will make some anecdotal data based on my two foreign trips last week. First I went to Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia to attend the Economic Freedom Network (EFN) Asia meeting and conference 2017. Then I went to New York City, USA to attend a meeting on i... more »

Humans all have an identical organ in their cranium but the use of it swings from the barely to weird to outlandish. Something to consider is the difference between the brain and the mind. Don't spend too much time on this though, as it will drive one towards the deep end. The brain absorbs information and stores it in different locations, while the mind collects this information and life's events into a mishmash with jumbled feelings and births a personality. This is what creates an i... more »

Any vaguely capable underwriter knew what was going on. Yet it was a gold rush. All the safeguards had been compromised and the clients had not gotten wise. So make as much now and hope you can stick the bill to the government when it does collapse. Which is what happened. The folks in the government have never taken full revenge. I cannot believe that they do not know as the leaders all worked across the street. again the loop is closed. They all must become subject to an orderly predation. That predation ideally means collecting the animals at a prime age and then feeding them up into prime condition before humane slaughter. It is that second step that makes the meat quality consistent and eliminates any risk of gaminess. This needs to be applied to all deer populations as well as moose and elk as well and really all members of the famil... more »

What prevents Russia from having an economy akin to modern China?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 20 hours ago
This is a really good question and the answer is well worth reading. It really does take time for cultures to adapt to both modernism and to free market activity. It further explains similar conditions in Latin America. It is also true that they are cognizant of their flaws and are striving to overcome them. Thus it is only a matter of time and perhaps joining the EU ASAP. That would permit proper suppression of criminal elements and a massive investment in productive assets. Most important is that the worst is well behind them now. A twenty year old from 1990 is now a forty... more »

He was reflecting on changes to society over the past 60 years, in an interview for BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
