YouTube channels--addictive time wasters
Do you ever watch the YouTube channels? Today I wasted a huge amount of time watching 3 videos of Top Notch Lawn Care. Yup. Watched a guy cleaning up the worst yards and lawns you've ever seen. Thousands of viewers and many comments. It was sort of satisfying after all the war footage and the hopeless mess our politicians get us into. As my mom who remodeled her parents' farm home as a religious retreat center used to say, "I can't save the world but I can save 4 acres." I think that must be how this guy believes. read more

The U-Curve Decline Was Less Than Many Economists Think
Piketty and Saez (2003) found a pronounced U-curve pattern of American income inequality since 1917, displaying a precipitous decline during World War II to a level that would hold until 1980. Like the vast majority of readers of this column, I very strongly condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing atrocities. War is never an answer to international controversies. And I would like to add: I am in favor of all sanctions that financially hit the aggressor, including cutting Russia from use of international banking circuits and similar impactful actions. That said, I will say here what I think about this ongoing rush to find ways to hurt a country whose citizens are largely innocent of their leader's crimes. History Taught Ukrainians How to Resist Russian Occupation
*Peter Suciu* *Russia-Ukraine War, Europe* It isn't just the Ukrainian Army that Russia is facing. In 1982, the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv celebrated its 1,500th anniversary. Unfortunately, as Kyiv was occupied by multiple invaders over the centuries, the city’s rich history is also filled with tragedy. Kyiv survived assaults by the Khazars, Varangians, Mongols, and Tatars. The city faced occupation by Germany during the First World War, fell under the control of the Red and the Whites over the course of the Russian Civil War, and suffered greatly during World War II. In 1941, du... read more

Divestment From Russia by Foreign Business Could Increase Pressure on Putin
Vladimir Putin in 2021. (Official photo by the Kremlin; www.kremlin.ru) Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to start a “war of choice” on Ukraine, leading foreign business with multibillion-dollar investments in Russia, including BP, Shell, ExxonMobil, and Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, have announced that they are going to divest or exit operations. Many others, including Apple, McDonald’s, and Starbucks, have begun to suspend operations. Faced by a similarly stark moral dilemma in South Africa during apartheid, many international companies divested and eventua... read more

The Justice Department Faces a Setback in the Capitol Riot Cases
Rioters storm the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. U.S. District Judge Carl J. Nichols, ruling in the case of Jan. 6 insurrection defendant Garret Miller, dismissed the felony charge that has become the single most important weapon in the government’s arsenal in Capitol insurrection cases. In essence, he found that the government could not use the charge the way it has, in fa... read more

Iran Nuclear Talks Break Off Without A Deal
*The Guardian:* *Iran nuclear talks on hold over last-minute Russian demands* *Moscow is insisting that Washington pledge not to sanction trade between it and Tehran over Ukraine* Talks on the revival of the Iran nuclear deal have become a casualty of the war in Ukraine after an indefinite pause was announced over last-minute Russian demands. An agreement on the nuclear deal to bring the US and Iran back into compliance would have led to a swathe of US sanctions on Iran being lifted, including Iranian crude oil exports and petrochemicals, in return for limits on Tehran’s ... read more
Will Ukraine's Asymmetric Resistance Force Russia From Ukraine?
*Kris Osborn* *Russia-Ukraine War, Europe* The sheer number of Russian forces may not be enough to overcome the strong Ukrainian resistance. Although Russia’s campaign in Ukraine has been brutal, Vladimir Putin has still not deployed much of his military’s combat power. This reality is likely unsettling for those supporting the fierce and thus far successful Ukrainian resistance. Despite Ukraine’s tactical successes and the surprising extent to which the Russian military has been ineffective, some may be inclined to think that a Russian victory is just a matter of time. Global Food Crisis Growing As The War In Ukraine Continues
*Bloomberg:** Record Food Prices Could Leap 22% More on Ukraine War, UN Warns* (Bloomberg) -- Record-high global food costs could surge another 22% as Russia’s assault on Ukraine stifles trade and slashes future harvests, the United Nations warned. A report from the agency’s Food and Agriculture Organization on Friday shows the far-reaching fallout of the war on the world’s food system, with the impact set to stretch well beyond the next season. Ukraine and Russia together account for more than a tenth of all calories traded globally, and those flows have been stifled since th... read more

The group Wer Braucht Feminismus?
