After Hartlepool there is only one question. Is Labour’s decline terminal?
barovsky, The New Dark Age - 16 hours ago
It never ceases to amaze how the repetition of a lie quickly becomes a received truth. Goebbels must be turning in his grave. If only Labour had supported Brexit then all would be well. The statistics demonstrate that regardless of the position Labour took it would have done badly.
Update on ivermectin for covid-19
barovsky, The New Dark Age - 17 hours ago
Back in January I wrote an article about four randomized controlled trials of ivermectin as a treatment for covid-19 that had at that time released their results to the public. Each of those four trials had promising results, but each was also too small individually to show any meaningful impact on the hard outcomes we really care about, like death. When I meta-analyzed them together however, the results suddenly appeared very impressive. Here's what that meta-analysis looked like:
Hitting the Ground Running: A Q&A With Dr. S. David Wu, President of Baruch College
cmaadmin, Diverse - 2 days ago
The COVID-19 pandemic hit just as Dr. S. David Wu, president of Baruch College, was celebrating his first year at the helm of the New York City-based institution. He had to move quickly to implement measures to protect his administrators, faculty and students. In a Q&A with Diverse, Wu talks about the experience of leading a school in a major COVID-19 hotspot, being the first Asian American president to lead an institution in The City University of New York (CUNY) system and what leadership lessons he took with him to Baruch from George Mason University, where he served as provost f...

Hit and Sunk: A Swedish Submarine Killed an Aircraft Carrier During a War Game
Sebastien Roblin, The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Swedish Navy, Europe* [image: Swedish Navy] Submarines are still deadly and they can wipe out a major warship even if they are not nuclear-powered. *Key point: *A single aircraft carrier is costly to build and to replace. But cheap and quiet submarines can be constructed in abundance. In 2005, USS *Ronald Reagan*, a newly constructed $6.2 billion dollar aircraft carrier, sank after being hit by multiple torpedoes. *This first appeared earlier and is being reposted due to reader interest.* Fortunately, this did not occur in actual combat, but was simulated as p...
Should America Fear Russia’s Very Own Tomahawk Missile?
Sebastien Roblin, The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Russia, Asia* The United States and the United Kingdom—which also deploys Tomahawks—are no longer the only nations waging long-range cruise-missile warfare. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Though Russia still produces other types of naval cruise missiles, the Kalibr nonetheless appears set to remain the mainstay of Russian long-range naval strike capabilities for years to come. The land-attack version, in theory, offers similar performance to the U.S. Tomahawk, while the antiship variant’s terminal supersonic sprint may make it a deadlier weapon at sea. S...

Flying for Iran, U.S. F-4 Phantoms Now Fire Russian and Chinese Missiles
Sebastien Roblin, The National Interest - 17 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *F-4 Phantom, Asia* But are souped-up F-4s really equal to fourth-generation fighters? *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Iranian Phantoms bombed Islamic State targets in Iraq’s Diyala province in December 2014, and they continue to play cat and mouse games with U.S. patrols and drones over the Persian Gulf. The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a legendary aircraft — an icon of the Vietnam War and the archetype of the third-generation jet fighter designs that entered service in the 1960s. More than 5,000 of these heavy supersonic fighters were built, and hu...
Why the Navy Chose the F/A-18E Hornet over the F-14 Tomcat
Sebastien Roblin, The National Interest - 17 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *F-14 Tomcat, Middle East* The Tomcat is one of the U.S. fighters that has seen the most sustained and intense air-to-air combat of its generation. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The Hornet airframe was not quite as optimized for air-to-air combat, but still delivered excellent performance, was based on fly-by-wire technology, and cost less money and time to fly and maintain. The choice between investing in a Super Tomcat or fielding the Super Hornet inevitably involved a trade-off, and the Super Hornet simply came out ahead in the Navy’s calculus. Let’s ...

Sunday morning music
Peter, Bayou Renaissance Man - 18 hours ago
Sometimes music, or a musician, comes along that defies classification. It/they create(s) their own genre, their own *oeuvre*, and others can only look in from the outside. There aren't many like that, but one such is undoubtedly Brian Patrick Carroll, better known as Buckethead. I'm at a loss to describe his music in a nutshell. There are elements of so many genres in it that it almost makes its own genre as a blended form. I have no doubt that he's a genius on the guitar, and ranks right up there with the top performers of the past half-century or so; in earlier times, h...

How Hitler’s Atlantic Assault Brought South American into World War II
Sebastien Roblin, The National Interest - 18 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *World War II, Americas* Brazil and Mexico were the only Latin American nations to fight the Axis powers abroad in World War II, though several countries also had encounters with Axis submarines. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The primary killer of Axis submarines off the Brazilian coast would be U.S. Navy patrol planes flying out of Brazilian air bases. U.S. Navy Catalina seaplanes sank *U-164 *off the state of Ceará on January 6, 1943; the Italian submarine *Archimede *in April; and *U-590 *and *U-662 *in July off of the Amazon Estuary. The First Aircraft Carrier Raid Targeted Hitler’s Zeppelins at Tondern
Sebastien Roblin, The National Interest - 18 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Aircraft Carriers, Europe* The Royal Navy was enthusiastic about sea-launched aircraft, in part because it had a zeppelin problem. *Here's What You Need to Remember: * In fact, the Camels had inflicted a surprising amount of damage despite their very limited bombload. Even though the German hangars survived intact, the base at Tondern was abandoned, its location near the coast considered too vulnerable. Nearly a century ago during World War I, the Royal Navy launched the first air strike from an aircraft carrier ever, targeting a zeppelin base in Tondern. Aft...
Will the ATF Redefine the Definition of a Firearm?
Peter Suciu, The National Interest - 18 hours ago
*Peter Suciu* *Guns, * The proposed change would be akin to defining an automobile not by its body, wheels, and interior but by its engine. When people see a firearm they see a firearm, but the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE), more commonly known as the AFT, sees guns a bit differently. In the case of a firearm, ATF sees it not as the sum of its parts but by definition a firearm is actually a very specific part—namely the receiver or frame of said gun. Put another way, it would be like defining an automobile not by its body, wheels, and interior but ...
Why Russia’s SS-21 Scarab Missiles Are Still a Potent Threat

*Sebastien Roblin* *Russian Army, Europe* [image: Russian Army] These missiles have seen combat and their upgraded versions are fielded today. *Key point: *A good missile is a serious threat and can be used in a wide range of settings. Here is how the Scarab was born. While NATO may preoccupied with the capabilities of Russia’s Iskander missile, the far more primitive Tochka, codenamed the SS-21 Scarab by NATO, has been responsible for *hundreds* of deaths in the last twelve months at the hands of Yemeni rebels and the Syrian and Ukrainian governments. The Ruger Mini-14 Rifle: An Underestimated but Very Capable Weapon

*Kyle Mizokami* *Weapons, * One of the most enduring and popular semi-automatic rifles in America traces its lineage to the battlefields of World War II and Korea. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The Mini-14 is not as accurate as nor has it attracted as many followers as the AR-15. Still, it is a viable alternative for those looking for a semi-automatic, magazine-fed rifle, especially considering recent gun control measures. Museum Piece: The SR-71 Spy Plane Was the Fastest American Warplane
Sebastien Roblin, The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *SR-71 Blackbird, Americas* [image: SR-71 Blackbird] The SR-71 remains the fastest aircraft that America put into serial production. *Key point: *Even today, America does not have a faster warplane than the Blackbird was. However, there are rumors of a SR-72 in the works. The sleek and sinister SR-71 Blackbird looks like it belongs in a science fiction movie, though in fact the jet black spy plane proved far more successful at outrunning enemy missiles than any of the spaceships depicted in Star Wars. Though retired in the 1990s in favor of spy satellites and ...
These Weapons Are Major Reason No One Wants to Take On the Israeli Army

Since 1948, the state of Israel has fielded a frighteningly effective military machine. Built on a foundation of pre-independence militias, supplied with cast-off World War II weapons, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have enjoyed remarkable success in the field.
