The dismay felt by many Canadians came in part because of what the targeted institution represents, and in part, because we recognized the hatred and fervor in those who sought to tear it down. In recent years, like their counterparts to the south, Canadian security agencies have warned of the growing danger of ideologica...

Glenn Greenwald, whom we've met in these pages several times before, points out that what he calls "an unholy mix of junior high hall-monitor tattling and Stasi-like citizen surveillance" is growing among some journalists. It's perhaps even worse than he says, because many of those journalists aren't independent, but are employed by the mainstream media. Their employers wouldn't be paying them for their efforts if they didn't approve of them. Just as the NSA is obsessed with ensuring there be no place on earth where humans can communicate free of their spying eyes and ears, ...

A man without history and culture is a myth. He does not exist. A man can hate and deny his history and culture, but he cannot escape his history and culture. A Record Spectrum Auction Points to the Promise of 5G

*Bret Swanson* *Technology, The Americas* Many on Wall Street — who had expected total winning C-band bids of around $40 billion — are concerned the high prices will bloat the already hefty debt loads of the mobile and cable firms. Low interest rates are probably one factor in the high bids and help soften the blow. Regardless, the $80 billion figure signals the promise of 5G wireless. I wonder what Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson are thinking. They are the winners of the 2020 Nobel Prize in economics for the advancement of auction theory and design. You might remember last fall’s...
Why are America and Russia Wasting Billions on a Nuclear Arms Race?
Michael Peck, The National Interest - 18 hours ago
*Michael Peck* *Security, Eurasia* “If you go on with this nuclear arms race, all you are going to do is make the rubble bounce.” *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Russia is waging a hybrid mixture of conventional and unconventional warfare, and American troops on the ground still face IEDs and insurgents. Is a new ICBM what America now needs to spend tens of billions of dollars on? “If you go on with this nuclear arms race, all you are going to do is make the rubble bounce,” warned Winston Churchill. That was in 1952, just two years after America tested the first hydrogen bom...
The Roots of Canada's COVID-19 Vaccine Shortage Go Back Decades
Joel Lexchin, The National Interest - 18 hours ago
*Joel Lexchin* *Coronavirus, The Americas* Nobody seems to have been paying attention. As a result, when the COVID-19 pandemic started, Canada was left with few options. As of Feb. 5, Canada had administered 2.7 COVID-19 vaccination doses per 100 people compared to 61.7 for Israel and 16.2 for the United Kingdom. By contrast, Canada has signed contracts with seven different companies for a total of 234 million doses with options for tens of millions more. What’s going on? To understand the problem, we need to go back to the 1980s. At that time, the government-owned Connaught Lab...
Mow Much Influence does the Queen of England Wield Over Australia?
Anne Twomey, The National Interest - 18 hours ago
*Anne Twomey* *Politics, * Her power is exercised behind closed doors, and is more potent because of it. We all know the queen can’t refuse assent to a bill just because she doesn’t like it. But can she secretly get a law changed, in her personal interest, before it is even introduced into parliament? The answer is yes, and we finally have documentary evidence to prove it. *The queen, politics and secrecy* There is a myth the queen never involves herself in political matters. In public view, all she does is act on ministerial advice, signing her name or initials where required....

The West vs the Global South: You Have the Numbers. We Have the Money
UNITED NATIONS, Feb 09 (IPS) - When the 134-member Group of 77, the largest single coalition of developing countries, was trying to strike a hard bargain in its negotiations with Western nations years ago, one of its envoys famously declared: “You have the numbers. We have the money.” Read the full story, “The West vs the Global South: You Have the Numbers. We Have the Money”, on globalissues.org →
Intellectual Property Cause of Death, Genocide
KUALA LUMPUR and SYDNEY, Feb 09 (IPS) - Refusal to temporarily suspend several World Trade Organization (WTO) intellectual property (IP) provisions to enable much faster and broader progress in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic should be grounds for International Criminal Court prosecution for genocide. Oh, good grief!!!
Peter, Bayou Renaissance Man - 19 hours ago
I thought I'd seen just about everything. Then . . . this. Yes, those are pink T-Rex arms . . . attached to a chicken (admittedly, a descendant of the dinosaurs, although T-Rex might have snorted at the comparison). They're apparently a thing - a best-selling thing among chicken fanciers, if reports are to be believed. I've heard of "buffalo hot wings", but never of "T-Rex dinosaur wings". I wonder what sauce should be used on them (the real thing, that is)? Considering that their critter of origin is extinct, "ghost pepper" sauce might be appropriate! Peter

Naked Short Selling: The Truth Is Much Worse Than You Have Been Told
arclein, Terra Forming Terra - 20 hours ago
It is much worse than this. what has happened is that muct of the volumes on even the largest companies are been bucketed today. That means the buy order is filled without a compensating sell order. The seller then has ample incentive to keep the price stable to allow selling to come in to fill the naked side of the order. This has always been out there and lies were told to protect the racket. Understand that most broker dealers are lousy marketing organizations. Yet they keep afloat because the trading desk makes it pay this way every month and on good months even the par...

Iran has No Interest in Changing its Strategy
Wang Xiyue, The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*Wang Xiyue* *Politics, Middle East* The Biden Administration should walk in with their eyes open and be aware that previous experience demonstrates that engagement with Iran produces no incentive for the regime to improve its behavior. As speculation increases about the Biden administration’s intentions toward Iran and the nuclear deal, Iran’s actions belie any willingness to compromise or soften its stance against the US. On January 17, a few days before the inauguration of then-President-elect Joe Biden, reports emerged that Tehran’s Revolutionary Court had convicted Iranian-A...
General Arthur Percival: Military Failure or Convenient Scapegoat?
Warfare History Network, The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*Warfare History Network* *History, Asia* Blamed for the British defeat at Singapore, General Arthur Percival endured harsh criticism. *Here's What You Need to Know*: On February 15, 1942, the island fortress of Singapore surrendered with 130,000 men, thus ending the defense of Malaya as one of the largest military disasters in the history of British arms since Cornwallis’s capitulation to Franco-American forces at Yorktown in 1781 during America’s Revolutionary War. Lieutenant General Arthur Percival’s surrender to the invading Japanese Army permanently destroyed Britain’s mili...
Europe’s Survival Could Depend on Germany Rebuilding Its Air Force
Michael Peck, The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*Michael Peck* *Security, * Germany is also the economic powerhouse of Europe, and to say it has a strong military tradition would be an understatement. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The fact is that Germany is the linchpin of Europe, and Europe is what keeps Russia in check. It’s going to be hard for America to withdraw from European defense if Europe can’t maintain its own air forces. Nor can Europe assert a credible threat to defend its interests if its aircraft can't fly. President Trump’s goal of Europe taking more responsibility for its own defense may come crashing ...
In 1896, Italy Made a Gambit for Africa. It Failed.
Warfare History Network, The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*Warfare History Network* *History, Africa* Seeking to grab a piece of Africa during the colonial scramble for conquest, Italy invaded Ethiopia in early 1896. *Here's What You Need to Know*: Under the cover of the dusty Ethiopian night, the 17,000-man Italian Royal Expeditionary force scrambled over ragged hills and inactive volcanoes in the early morning hours of March 1, 1896. With less than four days’ worth of rations and even less water, the walrus-mustached commander of the Italian army, Oreste Baratieri, hoped to save his men from starvation by making an audacious surprise ...
