Are *Newsnight*'s staff now playing a game of Dare on Twitter? You may already know that Emily Maitlis deleted a tweet today - one quoting, as if she were backing it, some attack on the Government for being anti-democratic by a controversial Sky hack from February. But I've just seen another Lewis Goodall tweet disappear before my eyes too. He was using the Portuguese government to attack the UK government, in a heavily loaded way - as is his way. And now that tweet has gone. It's all somewhat toned-down stuff down now on a similar theme instead - and, for him, surprisingly... more »
A Spike in representation?
It's a funny old world. In years gone by Sue and I would share our astonishment at Spiked's unwillingness to say a bad word about the BBC. Yes, they might sharply attack the mainstream media in general from time to time, but the BBC - for some reason - seemed off limits. I always put that down to Spiked people being regularly invited onto BBC programmes - as, indeed, they were. But Spiked, praise be!, has seriously fallen out of love with the BBC in recent months and joined the ranks of the anti-BBC partisans. It’s time to defund the BBC is one of their latest headlines and C... more »

Iran Is Flying the Same Fighter Plane Tom Cruise Made Famous in Top Gun
*Caleb Larson* *Technology, Middle East* An old, but good plane. *Key Point: *Iran still has some of these planes left from before the revolution. Here's how they repair and maintain them. The F-14 Tomcat first flew in 1970--and made famous by Tom Cruise in Top Gun--was intended to fly from American aircraft carriers to protect from massed Soviet bombing formations. The not-so-secret recipe to the F-14 Tomcat’s success was its variable geometry wings, that could be optimized for low speed and high-speed maneuvers. Made in China, Uh oh!
When construction of the Three Gorges Dam was first undertaken it was slated to be an engineering masterpiece of Chinese design but there were also warnings that it could be a major environmental disaster. That, too, may have been overly optimistic. Currently there is a disaster unfolding that may result in the complete failure of the dam, resulting in death and suffering of Biblical proportions. A new operating mode for fusion power avoids instabilities in the plasma that place a heavy load on the vessel wall and to remove heat and particles from the plasma more gently. The aim of fusion energy is to tame atomic nuclei the way the sun does. Because the fusion fire only ignites at temperatures above 100 million degrees, its low-density hydrogen plasma fuel must not come into contact with the colder vessel walls. That is achieved using magnetic fields inside a ring-shaped vacuum chamber. The international experimental reactor ITER, currently being built in Cadarache, France,w... more »

Lawyers Get No Bail In Property Damage Case, Face 45 Years In Prison
The Center for Constitutional Rights and a coalition of other civil rights organizations are calling on federal prosecutors to release on bail two New York attorneys who are accused of throwing Molotov cocktails into an empty New York police car during protests in Brooklyn on May 30. The lawyers — Colinford Mattis and Urooj Rahman — are facing a minimum of 45 years in prison if convicted on the federal charges. The two were initially released on bail, but then the federal government challenged the bail conditions, sending them back to pretrial detention — a move that shocked many i... more »
Shell: Latest Oil Company To Do A Belly Flop
We’re halfway through 2020, and I think we can all safely say it’s been a pretty terrible year. There’s been so much terrible stuff in the past two months alone, I can’t even remember the bad stuff that happened in January. But I’m sure it sucked. So I’ll take minor bits of good news where I can get it. And the latest is Shell writing down $22 billion on its balance sheets, making it the latest oil company to acknowledge that things are probably not going back to the way they were. The company announced it expected the dip in value to be driven by both its oil and gas sides of th... more »
Supersonic Disaster: Why Was Russia's Tu-22 Bomber So Bad?
*Caleb Larson* *Security, Europe* [image: https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2006%3Anewsml_RP3DSFDIOBAC&share=true] Moscow did improve later versions though. *Key Point: *The original version had a lot of problems. Here is why it took a while to overcome some of them. The Tu-22M proved itself as a capable bomber, but its predecessor—the ill-fated Tu-22—had a harder time. Here’s why. *First Supersonic Soviet Bomber* Though the Tu-22 had some characteristics that appeared to be beneficial, at least on paper, it was not pleasant to fly. It had two engines m... more »
Urban battle rattle?
I found this image on Gab yesterday. (Clickit to biggit.) I presume it's riffing off the New York Times' suggestion that Hawaiian shirts have somehow become associated with the "boogaloo" movement - something I'm not certain is any more than progressive angst. As for being associated with armed people, well, yes, the pattern and loose cut of Hawaiian shirts does help to disguise the fact that one may have a gun underneath it. That's very useful to those of us with concealed carry permits. Sadly, following the NYT's article, the shirts are likely to be of no further value for... more »
US Files Suit to Seize Iranian Tankers Headed for Venezuela
In the latest attempt to increase economic pressure on two foes, US prosecutors filed a civil lawsuit to seize the gasoline aboard four Iranian tankers that set sail for Venezuela last month. The civil-forfeiture complaint aims not only to stop the delivery of fuel to Venezuela but also to deprive Iran of the revenue and deter future shipments. Just last week, the US imposed sanctions on five Iranian captains blacklisted for delivering gasoline to Caracas. Daniel McAdams, executive director of the Ron Paul Institute, joins In Question to discuss:
House Democrats, Working With Liz Cheney, Restrict Trump’s Planned Withdrawal of Troops From Afghanistan and Germany
[image: undefined] The US military has been fighting in Afghanistan for almost nineteen years. House Democrats, working in tandem with key pro-war GOP lawmakers such as Rep. Liz Cheney, are ensuring that continues. Last night, the House Armed Services Committee voted overwhelmingly in favor of an amendment — jointly sponsored by Democratic Congressman Jason Crow of Colorado and Congresswoman Cheney of Wyoming — prohibiting the expenditure of monies to reduce the number of US troops deployed in Afghanistan below 8,000 without a series of conditions first being met. The imposed condi... more »

Understanding Why A Narcissist Would Make Their Partners Jealous
The most noticeable common behaviors seen among people with narcissism are actions that intimidate their relationships. Have you dated a partner who flirted with other people, or often chats to attractive strangers? They may flirt openly while pretending they do not see their partner there. They may even discuss how attractive others are and intentionally point out all the desirable characteristics their partners don’t have. Narcissists tend to form platonic relationships with beautiful, attractive people and act like it should not upset their partners. They very often do things to... more »
Selected Stories: Annexation of Palestine. Crime against Humanity
3 July 2020 — Global Research Security Council, General Assembly Never Held Israel Accountable for Violations of UN Principles By Michael Jansen, July 03, 2020 There is little doubt that some countries emerging from the death and devastation of World War II at least temporarily meant to commit to these principles. But, commitments did not for … Continue reading Selected Stories: Annexation of Palestine. Crime against Humanity
A Statue of Hatuey
If you look at a US $20 bill, you might notice Andrew Jackson nervously watching statues of Columbus and Robert E. Lee coming down and wondering if his face is going to disappear from currency. As Democrats ponder which militarist they wish to glorify in the next round of monuments, it is critical to realize that statues which go up are at least as important as the ones that come down. Perhaps the best nominee for a new statue is Hatuey.

Concerning the Mob and the Emancipation Statue

Photograph by George K. Warren. US National Archives] A celebration of Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Declaration, commissioned and paid for solely by freed slaves, is now under attack by the mob in Washington, D.C. It is considered demeaning because a freed slave kneels before Lincoln, his chains broken. The effort to simply eradicate this statue, and with it, the ability of Americans to... more »
Lyndon LaRouche: A Real Change is Coming (Almost 11 Years Later)
Lyndon LaRouche: A Real Change is Coming (Almost 11 Years Later) Video of Lyndon LaRouche: A Real Change is Coming (Almost 11 Years Later) In a country divided, faced with a coup against the President, now propelled by mob violence and the defacing of our history, as we fight a pandemic which challenges the boundaries of human knowledge, this Fourth of July 2020 is not the place for the usual pablum. Where are we going as a country? What makes us unique? What is the American identity? On December 3, 2009, right after the financial collapse of 2007-2008, Lyndon LaRouche answered th... more »

Common Cold Now Being Counted as a Positive COVID-19 Result
If you have two minor symptoms (sneezing, fever) or one major symptom, (respiratory major) you are COUNTED as a COVID case – hence the so-called “spike”. If you have allergies, you’re a case. In other words, even if you have the same symptoms as an allergy or the common cold, you could be classified as ... Mach 6.7 Monster: How America's X-15 Plane Is Still a Record-Breaker
*Caleb Larson* *History, Americas* [image: By NASA - NASA/DFRC, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1978148] An amazing piece of technology. *Key Point: *This experimental rocket plane was crazy fast. Here is how it nearly hit Mach 7. The date was October 3rd, 1967. U.S. Air Force test pilot William Knight was flying North American Aviation’s X-15, a rocket-powered airframe. Knight was flying near Edwards Air Force Base in California—at a lofty 264,000 feet, or about 50 miles. Not only was he flying high, Knight was also flying fast. His flight was on... more »
This Was Russia's Version of the F-22 Raptor. And It Was a Big Failure.
*Caleb Larson* *Technology, * Meet the MiG 1.44. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *Russia’s stealth ambitions are…grounded. One of their newest heavy fighters/interceptors, the Su-57, has had a number of teething issues. The Su-57 fleet totals only about a dozen airframes. Though certainly a more refined design than the MiG 1.44, stealth appears to be easier to say than to do. In response to the United State’s Advanced Tactical Fighter program — which spawned the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor — the Soviet Union initiated a crash project to produce a comparable fighter. What they... more »
Operation Pastorius: Nazi Germany's Attempt To Bring World War II To America's Shores
*Warfare History Network* *History, Americas* It wasn't just Operation Pastorius; during World War II, German U-boats made several attempts to land German spies on U.S. shores. The U-boat landings of German spies off the coast of Long Island during Operation Pastorius were not the only instances of U-boats putting German agents ashore on the Atlantic coast of the United States. There had been at least one other landing before Operation Pastorius, and there would be at least one afterward. *Intercepting a Saboteur Party* On April 14, 1942, two months before *U-202* surfaced off t... more »
A Historian Told Us Why Woodrow Wilson Was the Worst U.S. President Ever
*Robert W. Merry* *History, Americas* Worst. President. Ever. *Key Point:* Wilson brought America into World War I, and bungled the war effort. If you wanted to identify, with confidence, the very worst president in American history, how would you go about it? One approach would be to consult the various academic polls on presidential rankings that have been conducted from time to time since Harvard’s Arthur M. Schlesinger Sr. pioneered this particular survey scholarship in 1948. Bad idea. Most of those surveys identify Warren G. Harding of Ohio as the worst ever. This is ridic... more »
"History Lesson"
*"History Lesson"* by Jim Kunstler "Now I am going to tell you why BLM is a hustle, and how it came to this. Here is an opening to that honest conversation about race everyone’s been pretending to ask for. That’s been a hustle too, so far, because when anybody actually ventures to launch it, the cries of “racist” shut it down. The BLM hustle has turned into a violent insurrection supported by a body of bad ideas geared to driving the nation insane. The action on-the-ground is like the Jacobin phase of the French Revolution seasoned with the violent derangement of Mao Zedong’s Cultu... more »
