Randonautica, an example of pseudoscientific superstitions in 2020

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 11 hours ago
There are lots of things happening. I will avoid all the small topics described e.g. in my tweets. But an hour ago, a guy who thinks he is smart sent me an advertisement for Randonautica. Well, it is an app for Android or iOS. It's a new app for "orienteering", something like Geocaching or Pokémon Go, but the amount of hype surrounding it has been far greater while the substance is far smaller. Check e.g. Google News and YouTube. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Within weeks, this app has been downloaded over 5 million times. Am I missing something? As far as I can... more »

Face coverings in shops: it’s all about store policy and its reward or punishment – so don’t make excuses to be allowed in

As stated in the article, a follow-up piece to last Thursday’s The coronavirus police state (5): the wear-a-mask-to-shop deception, was pending in expectation of UK Government publishing the pertinent legislation [which, as at the time of writing, has still not appeared]. The idea was to explore ramifications of refusing a fine in the event that one is confronted by police on the premises of a shop.

Pompeo Lays Out New US Cold War Against China

Jason Ditz at Peace and Prosperity - 12 hours ago
[image: undefined] Following near daily screeds against China, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is now laying out US hostility, and the goal of “changing” China as part of what is effectively a new Cold War, likening it to Cold War with the Soviet Union. Saying that the US had changed Soviet behavior, Pompeo expressed confidence that they could change China as well, saying that the nations of the world have a duty to help the US “defend freedom.” He also warned that “our children’s children may be at the mercy of the Communist party.” This seems to be harkening back to the language o... more »

Gunshot To Head, Parkinson's Disease, Deaths In Palm Beach Incorrectly Attributed To COVID-19

[image: undefined] When it comes to overinflated coronavirus death counts, we recently outlined how a fatal motorcycle accident in Florida was added to the state's COVID-19 death toll. Still, no precise data shows just how overinflated death counts are on a state by state level. We have to rely on real journalism, such as a new report via CBS12 West Palm, that made a shocking discovery about deaths being incorrectly attributed to the virus. CBS12 said a 60-year old man who died from a gunshot blast to the head was labeled as a virus death. A 90-year old man who fell and died from... more »

Heckler & Koch VP9 Review: Is This the Gun That Finally Bests a Glock?

Is The United States A Failing State? A Failed State?

To ask whether the United States, the world’s dominant military power, is ‘a failing state’ should cause worldwide anxiety. Such a state, analogous to a wounded animal, is a global menace of unprecedented proportions in the nuclear age. Its political leadership is exhibiting a reckless tendency of combining incompetence with extremism. It is also crucial to ascertain at what point a failing state should be written off as ‘a failed state’ for which there is no longer a clear path to redemption. President Trump’s U-turn admission on the coronavirus pandemic, acknowledging that it’s going to get worse before it gets better, could be applied to the general condition of American politics. *CNN: **US and UK accuse Russia of launching new space weapon* (CNN)The US and UK militaries on Thursday accused Russia of conducting a space-based anti-satellite weapons test earlier this month, saying that a Russian satellite released an object capable of targeting a satellite. It's the first time the US has accused Moscow of testing such a weapon. "U.S. Space Command has evidence that Russia conducted a non-destructive test of a space-based anti-satellite weapon," the command said in a statement, saying that on July 15, Russia "injected a new object into orbit from Cosmos 2543,"... more »

*Kris Osborn* *Security, * New amphibious assault ships? China may be spinning up an entirely new class of amphibious assault ship with cutting edge fixed-wing attack capabilities and an electromagnetic catapult as part of a transparent effort to counter the U.S. F-35B. The possibility, introduced as very realistic and evidence-based speculation, was floated in an article in the Chinese-backed *Global Times* newspaper. The new class, described as a Type 076, would be a successor to the already under construction Type 075. China is already building a second Type 075 as part of a ... more »

While a slowdown in the economy and other uncertainty resulted in a slowing of sales of consumer goods, there is an exception to that rule: bad times still means strong sales for guns. Right In Front Of Our Noses

All of us, Andrew Nikiforuk writes, should be wearing masks. That's what Nassim Taleb, a Lebanese born mathematician, told us back in January: Taleb warned in late January that this pandemic required a rapid reduction in global mobility including lockdowns and social distancing to prevent exponential growth. But the functionaries ignored Taleb, because they didn’t understand that a pandemic is a dynamic whirlwind of complexity. In June Taleb wrote about the masks masquerade and the incompetence of some medical professionals. He noted that bureaucrats (and he calls them imbeciles)... more »

The Undeclared War Against Iran

A series of violent attacks, involving explosions and fires, has been hitting Iran. The incidents have been too frequent and intense to be random accidents. They are part of an organized effort. Caution is always advisable in attributing responsibility for such unclaimed acts, especially for all of us outside the government channels that possibly have better information about what is going on. But circumstances point strongly, as some mainstream press reporting reflects, to either or both of two suspects: the Netanyahu government in Israel, and the Trump administration in the Unit... more »

End Federal Executions, Racist Death Penalty

After a flurry of last minute appeals, stays of execution, the lifting of stays, injunctions and petitions regarding the nature of the drugs to be used, witnesses fearing exposure to COVID-19 and victims’ families asking for a halt — Daniel Lee, Wesley Purkey and Dustin Honken, all white, are now dead. US – China Spat Over Quarantine And Consulates

On Tuesday the U.S. government ordered the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston, Texas. The move comes amongst a slew of factless accusations of Chinese hacking and surveillance. While Trump, like Biden, is using anti-China propaganda as part of his campaign, the closure of the Houston consulate has nothing to do with it. But U.S. media fail to mention the real and unreasonable motive behind this move: The United States ordered China to close its diplomatic consulate in Houston within 72 hours, dealing another blow to the rapidly deteriorating relations between the two cou... more »

The principate system, Augustus’s solution to the problems of the Roman Republic, brought stability and good governance, and led to the rise of the Roman Empire. For the Roman people, the principate system was a vast improvement; they prospered under Augustus’s long reign (27 BC–AD 14) and for two centuries after his demise. But the principate system had one flaw—the problem of succession, and after the death of every emperor a war between the various claimants to the throne became inevitable.
