Can Trump Bribe His Way Out Of Impeachment? He's Certainly Trying

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 16 hours ago

Now, of course, everyone is wondering what will happen in the Senate once the House impeaches Trump. If you want to look at it transactionally-- and these *are* politicians we're talking about here-- among the Republican-held Senate seats up for grabs next year, several will be decided by independent voters (who have increasingly turned against Trump)-- not in zombie-Republica... more »

Amphibious Ships With a Punch: Navy Could Add Missiles to Assault Vessels

World War III Could Start Here: The Most Dangerous Border on the Planet

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Asia* [image: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_explosion#/media/File:Operation_Upshot-Knothole_-_Badger_001.jpg] A nuclear war between India and Pakistan remains more likely than any other nuclear exchange between great powers. *Key Point:* India and Pakistan remain in a precarious stand-off with no end in sight. India and Pakistan have been rivals since 1947, when the two countries were born from the dissolution of the British Raj in India. The two countries have gone to war four times since then, in 1947, 1965, 1974 and 1999, and been on the b... more »

Russia A Mach 3 Jet To Counter A U.S. Bomber That Never Flew

Sebastien Roblin at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * But was it really a waste? *Key point:* Russia has long land borders that are difficult to defend. In the last decade of the Cold War, the MiG-31, codenamed Foxhound by NATO, enjoyed a certain mystique in the West. The same grainy photos aerial photos of the high speed fighter would show up in aviation publications, along with ominous speculation over its capabilities. But unlike its peers—the MiG-29 and Su-27—the Foxhound never fully emerged from obscurity after the Cold War. The reason is simple—the MiG-31 was built to be a home-defense interce... more »

RIP: How A Mechanical Problem Led The USS Thresher To Its "Eternal Patrol"

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * A catastrophic loss. *Key point:* America's modern submarines were built through trial and error. In the United States Navy, submarines lost at sea are said to be on “eternal patrol.” One such submarine was USS *Thresher*. Meant to be the first in a new generation of fast nuclear-attack submarines, today it rests in more than eight thousand feet of water, along with its crew. *Thresher* is one of two American submarines lost since the end of World War II. In the mid-1950s, the U.S. Navy was still pushing nuclear propulsion out to the submarine fleet.... more »

Top Gun Meets Hell: When The Nazi And Russian Air Forces Went to War

Warfare History Network at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* Locked in combat and mutual respect. *Key point:* The Eastern front was the bloodiest in World War II. And in the air, it was no exception. In June 1942, the Black Sea port of Sevastopol on the Crimea was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of World War II. Commanded by Generaloberst Erich von Manstein, the German Eleventh Army was dispatched in a powerful attack to seize this important stronghold. Throughout the battle, a stiff but uneven air war raged between German Messerschmitt Me-109 fighters and a handful of determined So... more »

The U.S. Navy’s New Missile Submarine Might Be a Bad Idea

David Axe at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*David Axe* *Security, * Submarines are expensive. And they’re getting easier for enemy forces to detect. A robotic surface ship might make a better missile platform. The U.S. Navy is about to lose a big chunk of the missile tubes it relies on to fire Tomahawk land-attack missiles during wartime. The four SSGN cruise-missile submarines that the Navy converted from *Ohio*-class ballistic-missile boats are slated to decommission in the mid-2020s. These four boats, each packing 154 missile tubes, together account for 600 of the fleet’s roughly 6,000 Mark 41 launchers that fire Toma... more »
