France's Dassault Rafale Fighter Won't Ever Be an F-35 (Or Stealth)
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * A stop-gap measure that is no F-35. *Key point: *France plans to replace the Dassault Rafale in the 2030s. In January 2019, French Defense Minister Florence Parly announced France would commit $2.3 billion to develop an F4 generation of the Dassault Rafale twin-engine multirole fighter. This would include production in 2022–2024 of the last twenty-eight of the original order of 180 Rafales, followed by the purchase of an additional thirty Rafales F4.2s between 2027–2030, for a total of 210. Transatlantic Alliance Mistake: Turkey Isn't Worthy of NATO Membership
*Doug Bandow* *Security, Middle East* [image: Reuters] Once viewed as a responsible Islamic model, the Turkish republic is turning into a soft dictatorship. It is hard to imagine a less appropriate visitor or time. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is journeying to Washington. He has guided his nation, a one-time valued ally, far from America’s principles and practices. President Donald Trump’s view of Erdogan as a “friend” makes Ankara’s drift more dangerous. Turkey would not be invited to join the transatlantic alliance today. It has abandoned even the pretense of libera... more »
Afghanistan on Notice: Why America Needs to Establish a Troop Withdrawal Deadline
*Christopher J. Fettweis* *Security, Middle East* [image: Reuters] For nineteen years, the United States has sent the wrong message to Kabul. One president after another has assured America’s Afghan allies that U.S. troops would stay until stability came, which has given the Afghans no incentive to bring about that stability. President Donald Trump wants to pull U.S. troops out of Afghanistan. The Democrats and the American people want to remove U.S. troops out of Afghanistan. And the troops certainly want to leave Afghanistan. Unfortunately, no one seems to know how to do it. M... more »
U.S. Military Assistance Cannot Fix Mexico's Cartel Mayhem
*Ted Galen Carpenter* *Security, Americas* [image: Reuters] Drone strikes or U.S. special forces missions will not solve Mexico's cartel and drug problems. Trump needs to resist the temptation to adopt a futile, counterproductive military option in the country. President Donald Trump’s response to the massacre of an American ex-pat family by drug cartel gunmen in northwest Mexico was both emotional and suggestive of a policy response that could have far-reaching implications for both Mexico and the United States. Trump reacted to the incident with a tweet that stated “this is th... more »

Is North Korea's Possession Of A Nuclear Arsenal Permanent?
© KCNA / Reuters *Denny Roy, Japan Times:* *North Korea goes permanently nuclear — does it matter?* North Korea’s possession of an arsenal of nuclear-armed missiles increasingly looks permanent. The U.S. government will continue to refuse to officially recognize this reality, mostly out of deference to Tokyo. However, the region has settled into a new status quo. Pyongyang’s apparent strategy is to indefinitely delay substantial steps toward denuclearization while trying to coax disproportionate concessions from the United States. It's not even mainly about impeaching Donald Trump. It's about nostalgic career Cold Warriors selling their perpetual Cold War to a war-weary American public. "Reframe the debate: Immigration isn't about charity. It's about justice and abundance"
Co-author Bryan Caplan picks his two favourite panels from his latest book -- a *comic* book, on immigration,. Why a comic? Because that makes it so easy to read that even those who *won't* read the abundance evidence can. [And if you won't read, then *listen*.] "Reframe the debate," he argues: "Immigration isn't about charity. It's about justice and abundance." *Open Borders* is a non-fiction graphic novel. If you’re unfamiliar with the genre, picture a comic-book documentary. While the form is light-hearted, the content is thoroughly researched and carefully documented. I strive... more »

Natural Rights vs Political Rights
Sent in by Tony in NY, and we thank him. From American Thinker by Jeffrey T. Brown: A headline I read this weekend proclaimed that Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, the Klan-hood-wearing gent formerly known at VMI as “Coonman,” was “working on” possible gun confiscation in Virginia now that money on the Left has successfully buried his racism and bought the legislature for their party. Aside from the obvious commentary about what happens when Democrats obtain power, the headline suggests a far deeper problem confronting our country. It is only a matter of time before anti-constitutio... more »
"We Must Ask Ourselves..."
''As Americans, we must ask ourselves: Are we really so different? Must we stereotype those who disagree with us? Do we truly believe that ALL red-state residents are ignorant racist fascist knuckle-dragging NASCAR-obsessed cousin-marrying roadkill-eating tobacco juice-dribbling gun-fondling religious fanatic rednecks; or that ALL blue-state residents are godless unpatriotic pierced-nose Volvo-driving France-loving left-wing communist latte-sucking tofu-chomping holistic-wacko neurotic vegan weenie perverts?'' - Dave Barry
"The Two Ways to Move Through Life"
*"The Two Ways to Move Through Life" * by David Cain "Whether we’re aware of it or not, we basically move through life in one of two ways, and each of us has a favorite. We’re either moving towards what we want, or we’re moving away from what we don’t want. It might seem like moving away from what you don’t want accomplishes the same thing as moving towards what you do want. If you’re successfully moving away from pain, dullness and disappointment, what could you be moving towards, other than pleasure, excitement and fulfillment? It should be a simple matter to decide which way to g... more »

Phoenix Light Rail Fail, 2019 Update
To the surprise of no one who reads this blog, Phoenix Light Rail continues to fail at every goal it set for itself, despite over $2 billion in cumulative expenditures and over 10 years of time to "catch on." In fact, the only goal it has succeeded in is to allow our local leaders to […]
Fanatics, politics, and one-track minds
As I've said many times, I'm neither Republican nor Democrat, neither left-wing nor right-wing. I have my own views on life, the universe and everything, shaped and formed through some pretty eventful experiences, and I don't expect anyone else to subscribe to them. Nevertheless, I try to understand what both wings of politics are going on about. That's particularly important when neither side seems willing to compromise in any respect whatsoever. The Z man addresses this as observed on the left wing of politics. Can the same be said of at least some of those on the right? Bei... more »

IS THIS WORTH DOING?
What percentage of minds out there do you think this will actually change? Me: 3 or 4% tops. Not because it's not effective but it just doesn't matter to those on team Trump. It simply doesn't. — Todd Poirier (@todd_poirier) November 13, 2019 I'd take a 3 or 4 percent change in opinion. Recall President Trump's margin of victory in key states: Michigan: 0.23% Pennsylvania: 0.72% Wisconsin: 0.77% Florida: 1.20% That's why I favor anything that sheds light on Trump's unfitness to serve: these impeachment hearings, the Anonymous book (the author may be a coward, but if one vot... more »

Smith & Wesson’s series of handguns based on the 1911 platform stays true to the gun’s roots while adding in a number of features desirable to modern firearms enthusiasts. The czar/tsar list
There was an earlier attempt to clean up the swamp back in 2011 with a bill introduced by Republicans because Obama had so many czars/tsars (good solid Russian term for Caesar) in place that were unelected, unconfirmed and unaccountable. They were not successful. George W. Bush had a similar number but most were confirmed, as were most of FDR's (who began the tradition). Imagine if someone had put in the effort and time to investigate and threaten each Obama czar the way Democrats have been completely focused on destroying Trump's choices or demanding they be leakers. I haven't ... more »
Long term problems, guest blogger Jeffrey Verasano
Some sobering thoughts about our future, many I'd been thinking myself--the swamp of unelected sycophants in DC is indicative of all the institutions around us, many of which we've willingly chosen. Jeffrey: "There are several long-term problems that seem insurmountable. - - The demographic time bomb has already been set - - Most major institutions have been subverted from the inside as the Long March through the institutions reaches its peak. It's a lot harder to rebuild these then to destroy them. Being mad at liberal insanity is easy. Running for the school ... more »
