Proposed Law Would Allow Victims Of Crimes By Illegal Immigrants To Sue Sanctuary Cities
*Shelby Talcott* *Society, * Will it pass? Republican North Carolina Rep. Ted Budd introduced a bill Thursday that would allow victims of crimes perpetrated by illegal immigrants to sue sanctuary cities if that is where the crime occurred. The Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act allows for victims of any crimes up until 10 years ago to file a lawsuit with a sanctuary city. Illegal immigrants with past criminal convictions made up about 74% of arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2018, according to Pew Research Center. “I’ve found that sanctuary cities’ fai... more »
U.S. Maximum Pressure on Iran Unsettles Syria's Kurds
*Matthew Petti* *Security, Middle East* [image: Reuters] As tensions in the Persian Gulf ratchet up, it’s not clear whether the Kurds and their allies in the Syrian Democratic Forces are willing—or able—to be a part of any U.S.-led war against Iran. Hawkish factions in Washington tout the Syrian Kurdish forces as a way to block Iran from regaining the “land bridge” through the Middle East that it once had through its alliances in Iraq and Syria. Happy to receive protection from Turkey and the Syrian government, the majority Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have lo... more »
America Has Overplayed Its Hand in the Middle East
*Ali Demirdas* *Security, Middle East* [image: Reuters] If the political science definition of “power” is the ability of a state to coerce another state to change that state's policies, then the United States is increasingly losing its ability to do so and looking weak in the process. I vividly remember when President George H. W. Bush addressed Congress on Iraq on September 11, 1990. His self-assuredness was evident by the way he clearly stated the objectives of the impending military intervention as being “to defend the civilized values around the world and maintain America’s ... more »
Point Break: Is Iran Ready to Retaliate Against America?
*Enea Gjoza* *Security, Middle East* [image: Reuters] President Donald Trump’s recent visit to North Korea provided Iran with a stark contrast between how the United States treats actual nuclear states compared to aspiring ones. The United States and Iran remain locked in a tense standoff, punctuated by periodic escalations, that could easily transition into a full-blown conflict. Following the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA, Iran has been subjected to crushing sanctions that have contracted its economy and put pressure on its leadership. Rather than concede, Iran has responded w... more »
Election 2020: Don't Make Campaign Promises About the Middle East
*Olivia Giles* *Politics, Americas* [image: Reuters] Donald Trump compromised U.S. security in order to fulfill his campaign promise—just like Barack Obama. What will the next U.S. president compromise? The history of U.S. presidential elections has long been characterized by campaign promises. Whether it be to lower taxes, create jobs, or even build a wall. The public loves campaign promises because they make it easy to measure a candidate’s success once that person is in office. However, campaign promises concerning Middle East policy have proven highly problematic. Both form... more »
Yemen Poses a Big Test for Iran
*Ahmed Charai* *Security, Middle East* [image: Reuters] If Iran grasps the olive branch in Sana'a, then it is possible that future negotiations can put an end to its conflicts. America’s allies are looking for peace in Yemen. The big question is: Will Iran seize this opportunity to end its war in the Arab world’s most desperate land? Yemen, a country perched on the southern tip of Arabian Peninsula, has more internal refugees than any other nation on Earth. More than one-quarter of its population has been forced from their homes by a civil war that pits the Iran-backed Houthi tr... more »

A Diverse Shakespeare
W.E.B. DuBois would be proud of an ongoing effort to “translate” all 38 plays by William Shakespeare into an English intelligible to contemporary patrons of the stage. “I sit with Shakespeare,” DuBois wrote, “and he winces not.” DuBois was like Shakespeare: he took in all the world offered. He assimilated experiences to himself, not vice versa.

Endless Exodus: Faculty of Color Leave the Academy in Search of Fulfillment
Dr. Andre M. Perry is one of many academics of color who determined that the campus environment was no longer where they wanted to be. Although no agency appears to track the number of college faculty, particularly those of color, who exit the ivory tower, the transitions over time are significant because the disproportionately low numbers of faculty of color are stagnant or declining while students of color are increasing as a proportion of the nation’s colleges and universities.

'Obliteration' - Trump Threatens Iran With Nuclear Strike
President Trump has threatened to "obliterate" parts of Iran if "anything American" is attacked by the country. This, combined with "all options on the table" clearly suggests the use of nuclear weapons. In an article in today's American Conservative, former US Marine and nuclear weapons inspector Scott Ritter shows how last year's US Nuclear Posture Review outlines scenarios that make this nightmare a possibility. Watch today's Liberty Report:
It's Urgent That Democrats Win Back The Virginia House In November-- Meet Progressive Democrat Eric Stamps
In less than 4 months the Virginia state Democratic Party needs to win 2 seats-- maybe just one now-- to flip the House of Delegates. The party and the DLCC have their status quo candidates in the easiest districts-- generally speaking the ones Northam won that are occupied by Republicans. They ignore the rest of the state-- in some ways a good thing for progressives. When progressives win seats that the establishment ignored, they owe the corporatist establishment nothing. The drawback, off course, is that they have to depend on grassroots fundraising since the party will give th... more »

I drove a Ford Escort Mk. 2 most of the time, with a two-door body and a 1,600cc engine with a manual transmission (stick shift, for Americans). It had a few components replaced with upgraded versions for sporting use, but basically it was pretty much the same vehicle you could buy off any Ford dealer's lot. It's probably long since been scrapped, but I remember it with fondness. I was therefore very happy to come across this video of Ford Escort Mk. 2's rallyin... more »

"When Trump was voted into office, military spending stood at roughly $611 billion a year. In 2020, it will be $738 billion."
"The Reason Is..."
“The reason is partly because of a glitch in human cognition known as the just world hypothesis or just world fallacy, which causes us to assume that if bad things are happening to someone, it’s because that person deserves it. Blaming the victim is more psychologically comfortable than seeing that we live in an unjust world where we could very easily become victim ourselves someday, and we select for that comfort over rational analysis. Like other cognitive biases, this one fundamentally boils down to our annoying psychological tendency to select for cognitive ease over cognitive ... more »

No Accountability in Washington. The CIA Wants to Hide All Its Employees
[image: undefined] Government that actually serves the interests of the people who are governed has two essential characteristics: first, it must be transparent in terms of how it debates and develops policies and second, it has to be accountable when it fails in its mandate and ceases to be responsive to the needs of the electorate. Over the past twenty years one might reasonably argue that Washington has become less a “of the people, by the people and for the people” and increasingly a model of how special interests can use money to corrupt government. The recent story about how... more »

Why We Should Impeach Now
My new piece for The Washington Post about why the Mueller hearings show impeachment needs to start now. "If the president is reelected and serves his full term, the five-year statute of limitations on obstruction of justice will run out before he leaves office. Thus, reelection would almost guarantee that Trump will never stand trial for his crimes. The only way Congress can ensure Trump is ever held accountable is to begin impeachment proceedings." https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/07/25/mueller-just-showed-why-impeachment-proceedings-should-begin-soon/?fbclid=IwAR09Zxa20... more »
5 Guns That You Should Never Consider Firing. Ever.
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * Just all sorts of bad. *There is nothing worse than these guns. Period. * Handheld firearms have existed in one form or another since the 13th century. Despite their long history, there have been relatively few real, genuine clunkers in the world of handguns. The close engagement range of handguns—typically zero to twenty-five feet—means that a handgun operator will often have little or no chance to clear a jammed weapon, and therefore complete, absolute, unqualified reliability is a must. Nevertheless, some handgun clunkers became famous, popular, ... more »
Schiff ‘Not Convinced’ On Impeachment: 2020 'Only Way’ To Remove Trump From Office
*Audrey Conklin* *Politics, * Here is what he is thinking. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said Thursday that the only way President Donald Trump is leaving office is if he “gets voted” out in 2020. Schiff’s comments came during a Thursday interview on CNN’s “New Day” after former special counsel Robert Mueller testified Wednesday before two congressional panels, including Schiff’s committee, on his investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 presidential election. “We do need to be realistic, and that is, the only way he’s leaving office, at leas... more »
Record Setting Heat Wave Threatens Notre Dame Collapse
*Kyle Hooten* *History, * Can it be stopped? The architect responsible for restoring Notre Dame has warned that unprecedented temperatures may cause the cathedral to collapse. France has issued its highest possible level of weather alert as thermometers in Paris soar to 105 degrees amidst a record-setting European heatwave, according to the BBC. High temperatures have architect Philippe Villeneuve worried that the Notre Dame may collapse if its masonry becomes dehydrated. The Notre Dame Cathedral is currently undergoing repairs after a devastating fire in April. “My anxiety is... more »

*Rayburn, Joel, **Iraq After America, Strongmen, Sectarians, Resistance**, Stanford: Hoover Institution Press, 2014* *Iraq After America* is one of the best books to help understand post-Saddam Iraqi politics. Retired Colonel Joel Rayburn broke up the country’s political groups into three categories: authoritarians, sectarians, and the resistance. He starts with Nouri al-Maliki as the authoritarian who used his position as prime minister to centralize power and divide, conquer and arrest his opponents. The sectarians were split between the Shiite supremacists who wanted to assure t... more »

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 25 (IPS) - This is part of a series of features from across the globe on human trafficking. IPS coverage is supported by the Riana Group. Human trafficking for sexual exploitation has been steadily increasing in Canada. The most recent statistics indicate that 2016 had the highest recorded rate of human trafficking, with one police-reported incident for every 100,000 people in Canada. The Sorry State of Cybersecurity Imagery
Cybersecurity visualization example (Source: Hewlett Foundation Cyber Initiative) The state of cybersecurity imagery is, in a word, abysmal. A simple Google Image search for the term proves the point: It’s all white men in hoodies hovering menacingly over keyboards, green “Matrix”-style 1s and 0s, glowing locks and server racks, or some random combination of those elements—sometimes the hoodie-clad men even wear burglar masks. Each of these images fails to convey anything about either the importance or the complexity of the topic—or the huge stakes for governments, industry and ... more »

Are New Fungal Superbugs Emerging Thanks to Climate Change?
*Candida auris fungus (source)* *by Thomas Neuburger* Normally humans are not much troubled by fungal infections (as opposed to bacterial and viral diseases, which are far more common). There are several reasons for this — a healthy human's immune system being one — but another is that the temperature of the human body is simply too high to support most fungal life. That seems to be changing, however, and the cause seems to be climate change — that increased global temperatures are forcing certain strains of fungi to adapt to warmer environments than they would normally find tol... more »

Marriage and the "loaf of bread test"
I was pleased to read an Australian article offering a fresh perspective on what makes a good, sound relationship. It may seem trite, but it echoes what I used to say to couples in marriage counseling (as a pastor) for many years. The Loaf of Bread Test was unwittingly invented by the husband of a friend. He made sandwiches for my friend and himself. There wasn't much bread left so he made his sandwich with the crusts and gave her the good slices. It was such a tiny gesture — mundane even. It's not Insta-worthy, you wouldn't put it on Facebook and tag your partner in it, and it's ... more »

Why the focus on non-residential investment?
I often see pundits separate investment spending into residential and non-residential categories. But I’m not sure why they do this. What makes residential investment so special?
