Trump’s Tweets Slam Canada and Trudeau Anew from Singapore
President Donald Trump took more swipes at Canada and its prime minister over trade issues as he settled in for a summit with North Korea in Singapore, contending that "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal."
Editor's Commentary -- Singapore Summit
It has been an interesting few hours. I suspect that much of what was discussed will be disclosed in the next day or two. I found both men unsure of themselves .... especially Kim Jong-un. But that is not surprising .... there has never been a U.S. - North Korean meeting like this one. I found when they gathered for their working lunch President Trump was clearly in a very positive mood .... while Kim Jong-un had the look of a man who was not sure on what was going to happen next .... and his delegation also looked very unsure of themselves. That is just the impression that I was get... more »

"The Line..."
“The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either, but right through every human heart, and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. Even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained; and even in the best of all hearts, there remains a small corner of evil. It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person.” - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

That's the year Charles Darwin published "The Origin of Species," the book that spelled out the theory of evolution by natural selection. In reality, the father of modern biology was influenced by Thomas Malthus, who published "An Essay on the Principle of Population" in 1798. In fact, it might be said that ...more »

May 2018 Ocean Cooling On Hold
The best context for understanding decadal temperature changes comes from the world’s sea surface temperatures (SST), for several reasons: The ocean covers 71% of the globe and drives average temperatures; SSTs have a constant water content, (unlike air temperatures), so give a better reading of heat content variations; A major El Nino was the dominant […]

In Praise of Vagueness
This video (passed along by an administrator to staff) has some valid points, but on the whole, it represents a point of view that I think is hugely over-valued by some folks in education these day-- the view of education as a hyper-engineered all-on-the-same-page objective-dominated process. The speaker is Mike Mattos (who I sometimes find inspirational and sometimes-- well, sometimes he invokes Marzano's name like he's someone we should pay attention to) and the topic is getting "insanely specific about learning outcomes and learning objectives." I'm not a fan. You probably know ... more »

As The Republicans Shift Further Right, The Democrats Follow Them And Are Now Your Father's GOP

This capacity for individual commentators - whether bloggers, youtubers, meme producers, commentators, etc -- to communicate to mass audiences fundamentally dislocated the power of centralized mass communication.
