Fresh Insights on First-Generation College Students: A Need to Change the Language of Retention
It’s true that first-generation students might be naïve to standard operating procedure in higher education—I know I was when I stepped onto campus as the first in my family to go to college. But there is power in this naivete, as it offers the chance to reflect on why things are done a certain way. Too often, though, we focus on and track the ways first-generation students are “deficient,” emphasizing potential negative outcomes. The goal is to protect them from their own shortcomings. However, this mindset misses the opportunity to capitalize on an influx of new perspectives. And,... more »

Drone Blowback: Much Ado about Nothing?
Photo Credit: via CNN *Editor’s Note: One of the most common, and seemingly convincing, critiques of the drone program is that it produces "blowback"—each miss that kills civilians, or even each hit that kills a militant, angers locals near the blast zone and inflames national sentiment against the United States in ways that aid militant recruitment. Such arguments are difficult to evaluate, but Aqil Shah of the University of Oklahoma did extensive survey and interview research on this question. He argues that support for the Taliban and other groups is not a result of drones but ... more »

As you see from the responses from the pessimistic commenters on my Friday night tweet, not everyone feels Señor Trumpanzee's decision to enable insurance companies to start denying insurance to people with "pre-existing conditions." Ending that practice was always one of the most popular pieces of Obamacare, even among people who didn't support Obamacare. I've written a lot about counties in places like, say, West Virginia, where Bernie didn't just beat Hillary on election day, but got more votes on that day than Trump did. Here's a random batch of red counties where Trump crushed... more »
Sunday morning music
Back in 1961, a singer named Frankie Lane released an album of Western songs titled "Hell Bent for Leather". Far away from the American West, in South Africa, my parents bought a copy and played it for my very young self. I fell in love with the songs, and wore out that album over the next few years. I then forgot about it as I grew up, and turned to more modern musical genres. The other day, I happened to come across a track from the album while searching YouTube for something else. It brought back a rush of nostalgic memories from my childhood, and I thought many of my older ... more »

Radio 4 profiles George Soros
For the first few minutes it sounded as if Edward Stourton's Radio 4 *Profile *of George Soros was going to be nothing but a hagiography but, towards the end, we did get some brief, dissenting comments - one from the spokesman of the Hungarian government, the other from a journalist whose beef with Mr. Soros is that his Open Society projects (such as the ones in Russia) haven't been anywhere near as effective as they should have been. (Not the usual criticism we hear of the meddling Mr. Soros). Plus we also heard a comment from a friend who described him as a benevolent feudal prin... more »

BWorld 219, The US-North Korea summit and the global economy
* This is my article in BusinessWorld last Wednesday, June 6. The summit meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong-Un (KJU) this coming June 12, 2018 in Singapore is marked with several paradoxes. For one, the US is the biggest economy in the world with a GDP size of $19.39 trillion in 2017 while the North Korean economy is very small with an estimated GDP size of only $16 billion in 2016, or just 0.08% of the US economic size. North Korea’s economy is small because it has focused its resources on its military and nuclear capabilities. As a result, ... more »

The Army's M4 Sherman Tank: 'Blunder' or 'Wonder' Weapon?
*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* The American-built Sherman medium tank was admittedly inferior to its German opponents. Yet, it won the war in Northwest Europe through shear numbers. For the Allied tankers and infantrymen of the American, British, Canadian, and Free French armies battling German Panther and Tiger tanks in Normandy in the summer of 1944, the Sherman tank’s failures were glaringly evident as their own shells bounced off the hulls of the Nazi armor and they were themselves destroyed at a far greater range by the powerful German tanks.
