Rotten food
I’ve seen several dozen commercials for restaurants which advertise “decadent” food choices. AHEM!! Maybe teaching Latin was a good idea, Greek too, because you might want to understand what your doctor tells you, especially if you have a dietary related illness. Decadent is Latin for “decayed”. Rotten. Ave Caesar.
SEX IN THE CINEMA: Who was the late Rose Marie?

By the time she was 5, she had her own national radio show, a weekly program for NBC. Back then, she performed as "Ba... more »

Security In Iraq, Dec 22-28, 2017
Attacks were up in the third week of December in Iraq, but that was after hitting a yearly low the week before. The rise in violence was largely due to incidents in Kirkuk and Baghdad. Casualties remained low however. There was a total of 61 security incidents reported in the media from December 22-28. That was up from 49 the week before. This was still the 20th straight full week where there were fewer than 100 incidents recorded. Russia's World War II Nazi-Killer: SVT-40 Semi-Automatic Rifle
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Europe* It was imperfect, but it did the job. The United States was the first major power to adopt a semi-automatic service rifle during World War II, the M1 Garand. While most World War II infantrymen had to pull back a heavy bolt after each shot of their bolt-action rifles, a GI could expend a Garand’s clip as fast as he could pull the trigger. However, the Soviet Union attempted to upgrade its riflemen to SVT semi-automatic (or “Self-Loading”) rifles *before *the United States. However, the plan fell through due to two intersecting problems: the...more »

50 Years After King
On January 15, when we celebrate the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.— this year on his actual birthday — we will undoubtedly also recall that it has been 50 years since his death. La Nina and flooding in the PH, other countries
After a big El Nino the last two years, La Nina is back this year and it seems to be a bad one, lasting probably for the next two years. In the Philippines' main island of Luzon for instance, regular rainy or wet season is from June to October. This year, it is end-December already and it's been cloudy on most days with occasional scattered rains. There have been several heavy flooding in the country too until this month that killed dozens of people due to landslides and drowning. Ok, just what is El Nino - La Nina, how are they measured? The quick answer is if the sea surface tempe... more »

dreams - within one hour - 4, 5, 6 storey pub
I don't know how the human mind does this, "Between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 a.m.," I had this dream about a small (or rather compact) pub. It was at least a four or five storey, but maybe a six storey, pub with a wooden staircase winding up the centre of it. Decorated in a stained wooden panelled fashion. Filled to the brim, rammed to the gills, with hundreds of revellers. A bar on each floor, and some old friends... There was even some kind of Viking shield game taking place on the second floor. It was full of narrative and dialogue. And LIFE. "How does the human mind do this,... more »

New, Easy Experiments for testing the Simulation Hypothesis
Ethical Technology - 22 hours ago
In terms of the major models in physics and cosmology, the simulation hypothesis, digital mechanics, and computation-based interpretations have endured and indeed grown in popularity over the last few decades, making them major contenders to the scientific dialogue. Why simulation and computation make for such powerful analogies is that they offer a useful framework for approaching the paradoxes found throughout quantum mechanics. If quantum phenomena behave frequently as if spacetime is totally moot, that would make sense if our universe is something like a probability-based si... more »

Shotguns are chiefly sporting arms, useful for hunting birds or other small, fast-moving game, but also have military and civilian self-defense uses. The ability to project a devastating pattern of lead or steel shot to short ranges is also valuable in urban or jungle environments. Reuters *Daniel L. Davis, National Interest: **Is the U.S. Military Ready for a War with North Korea?* *Can the United States win a conflict with North Korea no matter what? Yes. Does it mean it would be costless? Absolutely not.* Earlier this month, Senator Lindsey Graham said that if the United States goes to war against North Korea, it would be, “an all-out war against the regime; there is no surgical strike option.” It would be bloody, he conceded, “but don’t ever lose sight of how this war ends… we win it.” Yet is that a safe assumption? BWorld 173, Energy favoritism under TRAIN
* This is my column in BusinessWorld last July 19, 2017. The recently approved tax reform for acceleration and inclusion (TRAIN) by the Congressional Bicameral Committee exhibits a number of favoritism for some energy products and players while penalizing others. BWorld 172, Mining and natural disasters

Rizal Day, 121 years of heroism vs colonialism
Today is Jose Rizal Day, a regular holiday in the Philippines to commemorate his death anniversary in December 30, 1896, less than two years before the end of Spanish formal colonization that started around 1560s. He was killed via firing squad at Luneta, Manila. With more than two centuries of generally cruel and bloody colonization by Spain, the Philippines has produced dozens of heroes in many parts of the country, leaders who started early independence movements but were unsuccessful because of the superior arms and merging of church-state affairs by the Spanish colonizers. Jose... more »
The death of the bees explained: Parasites, poison and humans
Over the last couple of years, we’ve tried to bring attention to the plight of bees. Sadly, even though many of us in the natural/green world have continued to discuss the issues surrounding bees, little has been done to help them. It seems that people still don’t know how important they are. RELATED STORY: Battered
Greenhouse theories compared
