BUMPED TO THE TOP--DUE TO PREVIOUS POST - Kerry tries again
*Greencrow Selfie with Obama* US Secretary of State John Kerry has recovered from his bicycle accident and is back making public statements. In his first foray back into the public arena it almost appears like he had some "re-education" during his convalescence. I just got the breaking-news email from the *New York Times*: Lyin' Brian Williams is being kicked downstairs to MSNBC from his coveted anchor spot at the network. Productivity Commission pisses on property owners
So the Productivity Commission has thrown their hat in the ring to “solve” the housing affordability crisis. Two things caught my eye in their recommendations. One was for more tinkering. The other was for confiscation. Of the first, as Michael Reddel summarises at Croaking Cassandra, “there seems to be a too-ready sense that government is the source of on-going solutions, rather than the source of the underlying problems.” These are people who appear never to have heard of the Law of Unintended Consequences. *The report doesn’t mainly focus on getting government (central and lo... more »

Rachel Dolezal and Transracialism
You've probably heard by now of Rachel Dolezal, a little-known NAACP activist from Washington State who, after years of presenting as an African-American was outed by her parents as a white woman. My immediate thoughts were that this represented the logical culmination of identity politics understood in terms of a cultivation of a radical/activist self. I've been on and seen footage of plenty of demonstrations where young people wear Palestinian scarves to express their solidarity. I've seen quite a few wearing them away from any protest activity too as a means of left wing identit... more »

Look, all you editors, news is when promoters DON'T hope that the turnout at a show will be big. ("(Hey, everybody. The show is lousy. Don't come.") Now, that would be a story. Kasich is 63. Because he entered the House at age 31, he’s been around a long time. Kasich was chairman of the House Budget Committee during the Gingrich revolution ...more »
Is the US Complicit in Ethnic Cleansing in Syria? Yes, Obviously!
*The obvious and only answer is YES!* Yes the US is complicit in the ethnic cleansing going on right now in Syria. I of course wouldn’t limit it to just this one incident. In order to be complicit, *choosing to be involved in an illegal or questionable act, especially with others; having complicity*, the US needs partner in crime. Support Okinawa Movement to Stop U.S. Base Expansions
In Henoko on Okinawa two US Marine V-shaped runways will extend out into pristine Oura bay covering a total area of 205 hectares. Of this total area, 160 hectares is to be in-fill, dredged from the sea. Already large concrete blocks weighing as much as 45 tons were dropped on 75 seabed sites destroying 94 colonies of coral. Okinawans regularly protest at base gates and try to block sea construction operations in their kayaks. Like on Jeju Island, South Korea they are manhandled and arrested by the Japanese government.
8 Ways to Unplug With Your Kids
Unplugging is hard. My husband and I both work in social media and so our phones are constantly buzzing with things that need to be taken care of. As much as I love my smart phone and my ability to work anywhere, sometimes I wish we could take a step back from the time where everyone can reach us every second of the day. We have certain rules in place in our house, no phones at the dinner table and such, trying to give our family the much needed time away, but sometimes, it doesn't seem like enough. This last week, I decided I was going to unplug for the whole day. Nothing would g... more »

Saanich-Gulf Islands - perhaps not quite Ground Zero after all
Saanich Gulf Islands in 2008 is widely perceived by many to be "ground zero for election fraud in Canada", as Elizabeth May puts it. Not only did the perps successfully pull it off but Elections Canada's botched investigation demonstrated it could be done in future elections with impunity. The scam comes in two parts. (Wet coasters may want to skip this bit.) 1)Robocalls Environmentalist and SGI Lib candidate Briony Penn lost in the 2008 election when robocalls from the US spoofed the NDP campaign number and encouraged SGI voters to vote for the NDP candidate who had very publicly dr... more »

Outrage Over Kiev's Shelling of Donbass
The passion and outrage of the people speaks volumes. The US-NATO directed war against the innocent people of eastern Ukraine is immoral, violates international law, and is ultimately genocide. When the people fight back to defend themselves they are called 'terrorists'. But the real terrorism is coming from the puppet regime in Kiev that is ultimately armed, trained, and directed by Washington and Brussels. How would you feel if you were constantly on the receiving end of these missile shells?
Tacitus
*"EARLY in this year Titus Caesar, who had been selected by his father to complete the subjugation of Judaea, and who had gained distinction as a soldier while both were still subjects, began to rise in power and reputation, as armies and provinces emulated each other in their attachment to him. The young man himself, anxious to be thought superior to his station, was ever displaying his gracefulness and his energy in war. By his courtesy and affability he called forth a willing obedience, and he often mixed with the common soldiers, while working or marching, without impairing hi... more »
Ramesses III and The Sea-People
*"The countries -- --, the [Northerners] in their isles were disturbed, taken away in the [fray] -- at one time. Not one stood before their hands, from Kheta, Kode, Carchemish, Arvad, Alashia, they were wasted. {The}y {[set up]} a camp in one place in Amor. They desolated his people and his land like that which is not. They came with fire prepared before them, forward to Egypt. Their main support was Peleset, Tjekker, Shekelesh, Denyen, and Weshesh. (These) lands were united, and they laid their hands upon the land as far as the Circle of the Earth. Their hearts were confident, f... more »
Major Michael Marman
*Major Michael Marman/Sir Peter Horsely (1986)* A complex case is examined in Sir Ranulph Fiennes' The Feather Men, a novelisation of an real-life story of intrigue and murder. The greater story unfolded in this fascinating book need only detain us momentarily: a secret 'army within an army' called 'The Feather Men' was formed during the 1970s, their purpose being to protect and support former SAS staff. Five former SAS men became the targets of a team of contract killers known as '*The Clinic'*, who were paid to murder them by the son of an Arabic businessman. Four of the sons of... more »
"A Look to the Heavens"
“The dark Horsehead Nebula and the glowing Orion Nebula are contrasting cosmic vistas. Adrift 1,500 light-years away in one of the night sky's most recognizable constellations, they appear in opposite corners of the above stunning mosaic. *Click image for larger size.* The familiar Horsehead nebula appears as a dark cloud, a small silhouette notched against the long red glow at the lower left. Alnitak is the easternmost star in Orion's belt and is seen as the brightest star to the left of the Horsehead. Below Alnitak is the Flame Nebula, with clouds of bright emission and dramatic... more »
"Why Bother?"
"Still and all, why bother? Here’s my answer. Many people need desperately to receive this message: 'I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.” - Kurt Vonnegut
Keeping the world safe from basset hounds, one luxury building at a time
*It's easy to ridicule the basset-hound-hating 170 West End Ave. co-op board, but somebody's got to protect the world from these beasts ("renowned," according to the caption for a different Wikipedia photo, "for their gentle, docile demeanor"), don't they?* *"The whole thing is just ridiculous because, at the end of the day, it's about dog owners being responsible."* *-- a resident of 170 West End Ave. (many declined tobe identified, out of concern for the co-op board)* *by Ken* *170 West End Ave.*Shucks, here I was, all set to man the Trump presidential beat. "Biologically wired" General Lawson
General Lawson makes mealy-mouthed excuses for sexual misconduct by the people under his command. Don't believe me? Look at this. This isn't leadership, this is a fucked-up mix of management-speak and personal pop-theory about human nature and organisational behaviour resulting in a can't-do attitude to a difficult problem because it might be hard or something. Another name for that sort of

Chet Raymo, "Philosophy 101"
*"Philosophy 101"* by Chet Raymo "If I were going to teach a course in philosophy (he said with tongue only partly in cheek), I would use for my text seven poems of John Updike, collected in a volume called "Facing Nature," called "Seven Odes to Seven Natural Processes." Individually, the poems celebrate rot, evaporation, growth, fragmentation, entropy, crystallization and healing. By "healing," for example, Updike doesn't mean some sort of spiritual redemption that you might find talked about in a traditional philosophy course, but the kind of biological healing that puts a scab ... more »

I and another officer then accompanied H... more »

Three deep breaths
Three deep breaths, palms together, Here in her room, or elsewhere, she may Rise and take. A habit she has formed, Even as most of her ideas, ideals, Even her so cherished findings, hard found, Deducted, inducted, reasoned, debated, polished, Even those most like faith, as taught her, Even those most like science, measured, observed, Peeled one by one: a human desert, she. By three deep breaths, she centers somehow: how? Reality itself a question she's no longer asking, Eating and sleeping themselves provisional. All she bothers to call caring is now to listen To breath, room sounds, out... more »

“When the Good Do Bad”
*“When the Good Do Bad”* By David Brooks "It’s always interesting to read the quotations of people who knew a mass murderer before he killed. They usually express complete bafflement that a person who seemed so kind and normal could do something so horrific. Friends of Robert Bales, who is accused of massacring 16 Afghan civilians, have expressed similar thoughts. Friends and teachers describe him as caring, gregarious and self-confident before he — in the vague metaphor of common usage — apparently “snapped.” As one childhood friend told The Times: “That’s not our Bobby. Something... more »
"Curveballs..."
"Just when we think we figured things out, the universe throws us a curveball. So, we have to improvise. We find happiness in unexpected places. We find ourselves back to the things that matter the most. The universe is funny that way. Sometimes it just has a way of making sure we wind up exactly where we belong." - "Dr. Meredith Grey", "Grey's Anatomy"
Chancellor Osborne to sell RBS shares at a loss. What's he up to?!
SOURCE: Chancellor Osborne's speech at Mansion House, June 2015 “There is another step we take today towards a new settlement with financial services – and that is to get the government out of the business of owning great chunks of the banking system.” “...if you take into account all the sales we’ve authorised of our bank assets, and the fees we’ve received – at the current
