Emissions visible from proximity of Fukushima Unit 3-4
Night-time emissions (I believe caused by hot fuel and cool, humid atmospheric conditions) illustrated below: Unit 1 is on the viewer's left. Notice the emissions arising from the right hand corner of the building? During the day it is sometimes possible to see the emissions emerging from that area of the building, but today there was too much precipitation to see much from unit 1, although unit 3's spewing is somewhat more evident: 12:36:01 PM See the emissions over unit 3, in the right hand, bottom corner: Here is a close-up from another screenshot taken at 12:51:40 PM ... more »
The "Heavenly City" of the Republican Right
*By William Neil* I now live in the heavily Republican area of the Western Maryland mountains, which are closer in the gritty facts of harsh economic life to West Virginia than to those of affluent Montgomery County, the “engine” of the Maryland economy, and where I used to live, but can no longer afford to. Our region has been consumed over the past few months by the campaign to stop fracking, and I’ve been getting itchy to write about the broader context of the political economy in which it takes place. After all, Maryland’s new Governor, Republican Larry Hogan, successfully b... more »
Review - Practical Projects for Self-Sufficiency by Chris Peterson and Philip Schmidt
Have you ever noticed how completing a do-it-yourself (DIY) project is so much more rewarding than buying something already made? There is, of course, a real sense of pride; moreover, it gives us the opportunity to choose earth-friendly materials and build an item which will last. It also feels liberating to know that we can sustain our lives without depending on the "big box stores". Since buying our property last year, we've taken on many DIY projects. With some of them, like the blue bird nesting boxes, we needed information so that we'd build something suitable for the preferen... more »

Less than one lifetime: Eyewitness to nuclear development, from Hunters Point to Chernobyl and Fukushima, issues a warning
The Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard placed prisoners and others in a bomb shelter during exercises simulating a nuclear attack. – Photo courtesy TimePix While sorting through papers, correspondence, news clippings, records etc., I realized that nuclear bomb and nuclear power development has occurred within my lifetime. It was July 16, 1945, when Trinity, the first atomic bomb, was detonated at Alamogordo nuclear site in New Mexico, followed by the uranium bomb dropped on Hiroshima and the hydrogen bomb on Nagasaki in August... Globalization: Global Agribusiness Hammering Away At The Foundations Of Indian Society
RINF, Countercurrents, Global Research According to the World Bank in the nineties, it was expected (and hoped) that some 400 million people in Indian agriculture would be moving out of the sector by 2015. To help them on their way, farming had to be made financially non-viable and policies formulated to facilitate the process. Food and trade policy analyst Devinder Sharma describes the situation: “India is on fast track to bring agriculture under corporate control... > Amending the existing laws on land acquisition, water resources, seed, > fertilizer, pesticides and food process... more »

Ashiva - Sunrise
No time for blogging this evening. Dissertations to mark, pots to wash, litter trays to clean. The blog, however, is my canvas to deface as I see fit and here for your perusal is a genuine hidden gem. Ashiva's *Sunrise* is a great poppy trance track that troubled MTV Dance viewers circa 2004, and promptly disappeared - save for a vapid cover much later by the awful Angel City. Yours truly never fully forgot it. And you can see why, this is a proper summery song and should be played very loud indeed.

If you think there are some, then read a book on war reporting from the early days of mass media in the 1890s to today. It's called "The First Casualty". I worked for a time with a journalist who had served in the Canadian army in World War Two. His job was to make sure that in photos the press sent home, any photo that showed a Canadian soldier looking tired or discouraged was scrapped. Later, teaching military history to an... more »

Two pariahs and problems with sound
Two things we’ve been saying for years on *Biased-BBC* and *Is the BBC Biased?* have suddenly become more obvious than ever. The first thing we’ve been saying for years concerns the BBC’s left-wing bias. Over the years interviewee and interviewer have come to find themselves corralled into a kind of ritualistic courtship pattern. If it’s a left-wing subject the tone is gentle and coaxing, perhaps with a spot of token feather-ruffling. If the subject is *not* left-wing, there is normally a hostile, badgering tone peppered with interruptions and adversarial rejoinders. The recent ... more »

Food Chain Catastrophe: Emergency Shut Down Of West Coast Fisheries
Mac Slavo Earlier this week Michael Snyder warned that the bottom of our food chain is going through a catastrophic collapse with sea creatures dying in absolutely massive numbers. The cause of the problem is a mystery to scientists who claim that they can’t pinpoint how or why it’s happening. What’s worse, the collapse of sea life in the Pacific Ocean isn’t something that will affect us several decades into the future. The implications are being seen right now, as evidenced by an emergency closure of fisheries along the West coast this week. On Wednesday federal regulators annou... more »
The Nightmare That Is Steven King (R-IA)
Novelist Stephen King had some fun with 3 of the GOP contenders on Twitter yesterday. For most Americans, Paul, Cruz or Rubio would indeed be a horror story-- along with the entire Republican Party agenda. But for immigrants there's another Steven King-- the Iowa extremist-- who is much more of a horror story... and for many of them, an existential horror story at that. Thursday the Iowa King was on the *John Fredericks Show* on Virginia radio. King claims, disingenuously, that Obama is importing "illegals" to stack the voting rolls. "To put it simply," he told the right-wing, raci... more »

Millions of Girls Given Vaccines Secretly Spiked with Sterilization Drugs
Kimberly Paxton Although some might call it a conspiracy theory, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the United Nations have been accused for decades of trying to secretly reduce the world’s population by hiding contraceptives in vaccines that are purported to be for other purposes. In 1992, during a meeting at the UN headquarters in Geneva, scientists and “women’s health advocates” discussed the use of “fertility regulating vaccines, particularly the anti-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin vaccine. Kenny Valenzuela highlights the details. *Research links posted below:* Baker College instructor told students to threaten patients into vaccinations, lawsuit claims Hospital... more »
Expert Says “Banning Cash” The Only Solution to Negative Interest Market Problems
Mac Slavo As everyone knows by now, the Federal Reserve’s main tool in economic warfare has become hyper low interest rates and, thus, extremely cheap money for large institutions vis-à-vis the controversial reign of QE – quantitative easing. Now, the how-low-can-you-go climate has created negative interest rates, meaning not only that many investments carry no return but that many deposits cost money. Well-known Citigroup economist William Buiter says the solution to this backwards market is to rein in the appeal of normal currencies like cash – because it is “causing problems”... more »

*Teachers more likely to label black students as troublemakers, study finds* *The report below is a summary of research by two minority psychologists, Eberhardt and Okonofua. In the study, "Two Strikes: Race and the Disciplining of Young Students", the authors tried to pin more frequent punishment of black students on inaccurate "stereotypes" held by teachers. * It is not completely clear what view of stereotyping that the authors adopt. To be a bit paradoxical about it, stereotyping is often stereotyped. By that I mean that the old 1930s view of stereotypes as fixed, rigid ... more »
DHS Seeking to Buy Access to Private Surveillance Cameras to Track Drivers
Cassius Methyl and Nick Bernabe Despite the ongoing debate to roll back the Department of Homeland Security’s current civil liberties overreaches, the DHS is soliciting bids from corporations for access to license plate data collected by private surveillance systems. Florida Rolls Out High-Tech “Smart” Street Lights
Aaron Dykes Despite appearances, the “smart” society was never based on saving energy, saving money or saving the environment. The real aim has been to control the population and conduct absolute surveillance on the larger herd and even every individual. Thanks to smart phones, smart meters, smart grids, smart TVs, smart cars and smart appliances, the places you go, the people you contact and all the things you interact with are logged, tracked and analyzed by advanced computer algorithms. Thanks to search engines, the technocrats even believe they know what you’re thinking and w... more »
The Global Credit Crunch Has Begun
Michael Snyder Get ready for another major worldwide credit crunch. Today, the entire global financial system resembles a colossal spiral of debt. Just about all economic activity involves the flow of credit in some way, and so the only way to have “economic growth” is to introduce even more debt into the system. When the system started to fail back in 2008, global authorities responded by pumping this debt spiral back up and getting it to spin even faster than ever. If you can believe it, the total amount of global debt has risen by $35 trillion since the last crisis. Unfort... more »

Smart Meters Unveiled
Source Catherine J. Frompovich Smart Meter (SM) technology is something most consumers may not be familiar with. However, just because the ‘smart’ label is attached to a technology, that doesn’t imply the technology is in the best interest of consumers’ overall health. Think again, especially when it comes to new ‘smart’ electric, gas, or water meters that are AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) SMs, which can do a few things consumers really may not be aware of and which really are NOT very smart safety-wise. If a BBC interviewer wants to avoid non-trivial accusations of bias then he should probably try to avoid appearing blatantly inconsistent - especially during a general election. If he *doesn't* avoid appearing blatantly inconsistent then further non-trivial accusations of bias will inevitably follow. Tennessee pulls back from the nuttiness of designating the Bible as the state's official book
Daryl Cagle, cagle.com (*click to enlarge*) *by Ken* So it appears that Tennessee will not, after all, designate the Bible as the state's official book. On Wednesday, the state House voted 55-38 to do just that. But as Dave Boucher reported Thursday evening for *The Tennessean*: The Bible will not become the official book of Tennessee this year. Bolstered by opposition from Republican leadership, the Senate voted 22-9 to send the Bible to committee, effectively killing the bill a day after it was adopted by the House.
