"A Look to the Heavens"
“Like delicate cosmic petals, these clouds of interstellar dust and gas have blossomed 1,300 light-years away in the fertile star fields of the constellation Cepheus. Sometimes called the Iris Nebula and dutifully cataloged as NGC 7023 this is not the only nebula in the sky to evoke the imagery of flowers. Still, this remarkable image shows off the Iris Nebula's range of colors and symmetries in impressive detail. Within the Iris, dusty nebular material surrounds a hot, young star. * Click image for larger size.* The dominant color of the brighter reflection nebula is blue, characte... more »
"The Wonder Of Life..."
"We live in radical times surrounded by tasks that seem impossible. It has become our collective fate to be alive in a time of great tragedies, to live in a period of overwhelming disasters and to stand at the edge of sweeping changes. The river of life is flooding before us, and a tide of poisons affect the air we breathe and the waters we drink and even tarnish the dreams of those who are young and as yet innocent. The snake-bitten condition has already spread throughout the collective body. However, it is in troubled times that it becomes most important to remember that the wond... more »
The Poet: Joy Harjo, "A Map to the Next World"
*"A Map to the Next World"* "In the last days of the fourth world I wished to make a map for those who would climb through the hole in the sky. My only tools were the desires of humans as they emerged from the killing fields, from the bedrooms and the kitchens. For the soul is a wanderer with many hands and feet. The map must be of sand and can't be read by ordinary light. It must carry fire to the next tribal town, for renewal of spirit. In the legend are instructions on the language of the land, how it was we forgot to acknowledge the gift, as if we were not in it or of it. Take note... more »

*“Dark Night of the Soul: Surrendering the Ego”* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "While we are in a dark night of the soul experience, hold steady knowing the light will appear once again. Whenever a word is overused, it is most likely being misused, and over time, it begins to lose its meaningfulness. For example, we often refer to a fleeting feeling of depression or a period of confusion, as a dark night of the soul, but neither of these things qualifies as such. A dark night of the soul is a very specific experience that some people encounter on their spiritual journeys. There are... more »

The pigs were confined in cages that were barely larger than their own bodies, with the cages stacked on top of each other in tiers, three high. April 10:Liberals ask departments to show how they would cut from budgets.
That's the front page headline in the Times and Transcript. Think about that. Each department has to cut 5 to 10% from its budget. Think about that. Surely the purpose of a government is to serve the needs of the people who live under it. So, if a government has to cut, wouldn't it start by deciding what is essential for it to provide. And wouldn't that mean the party would have to know what its philosophy of service is? And it that's what you have to do first, then how can you begin by saying cut 5% from this department, 10% from that one, 8% from that one? But, of course, the Lib... more »

South Memphis Community Group Goes on Offense to Save Their Schools
Over the past several months, I have had the opportunity to get to know and to work with a core group of dedicated teachers and parents in South Memphis who are smart, savvy, committed, unrelenting, and fearless in doing what is necessary to beat back the privatizers and profiteers who now think they call the shots for Memphis schools. These new friends and colleagues have attended school board meetings, where they heated up the microphones, and they have gone on TV and radio to get the message out on the ASD corporate charter handout organization and its homegrown equivalent, the... more »

Donna Edwards Rejects The Wall Street Political Contribution/Bribery System Van Hollen Revels In
Wall Street has picked its candidate for Maryland's open Senate seat: Establishment lackey Chris Van Hollen. He's their kind of Democrat and he's always played ball with them-- as they robbed his constituents blind. The Finance Industry has been very supportive of Van Hollen's career-- having put $1,584,364 into his political campaigns. In return, he's backed "compromises" that work far better for Wall Street special interests than for the legitimate interests of Maryland's working families. The progressive running against Van Hollen for the Democratic nomination is Congresswoman ... more »

Michael Harris writes that, as evidence emerges, it's clear that Harper has been fabricating a narrative: Duffy’s lawyer, Donald Bayne, read into the record a new wrinkle, yet to be laid down in testimony: Nigel Wright apparently told the RCMP that he advised the prime minister that Duffy’s housing allowance might be acceptable under the Senate’s rules. “I was aware...more »
This is Huge: Serious Research Misconduct in Almost 3/4 of FDA Inspected Clinical Trials – Hidden by Both Inspecting Agency and Researchers
First I had problems taking it in: *Almost 75% of US clinical trials inspected over a period of 15 years by the Food and Drug Agency, responsible for upholding regulation in this area, display serious misconduct of various kinds*. It can't be *that* bad, I asked myself; if it was ,I would have heard something about it before – research ethics in medicine being one of my areas of expertise! Except that I wouldn't, since neither the FDA nor the researchers in question have reported these stunning findings to the outside world. How Not To Screw Up Your Severance Negotiation: Underbidding

But if you aren't, then you may make some big mistakes. I thought I'd talk today about one of the worst mistakes you can make: underbidding. Let's say you're fired or laid off and you are handed a severance package for 8 weeks of severance. You don't think. You run into HR and say you won't sign unless they give you 12 weeks. Done, they say. But then you go home and think about it. You realize that you were l... more »

Trident: the ‘four submarines, three or none’ question

There are far more productive thing to spend our money on. But we’ve got them – so the question now is where and how do we go from here? Read more

I’ve Been Fighting a Battle Against these Ideas – the ‘Paradox of Thrift’ is a Myth: Dr. Mark Skousen
These are a few thoughts on ideas that enthrall economists and few others. A thriving economy is derived from a thriving market. A thriving market is created by maximum free access under a mutually accepted set of guidance which blocks power grabs of all sorts. Such grabs are always aimed at modifying such access and are always misguided and usually driven by plain greed. Attempts to limit guidance is usually an effort to use capital to exploit the evolved market. There is scant evidence that economists truly understand this. Consider. What it is not however, is a continuous function and that trips everyone up because we are not prepared for that. Once again we live in the empirical universe. That means that infinity is merely a very large real number N whose inver... more »

*And don't forget where your money's going (see below)* *My gosh, if they have that music blasting in the One World Observatory, I'm glad I'll never be going up there.* *by Ken* There's a whole list of things I become increasingly aware I'll never do in this lifetime. The list includes a lot of things I would have liked to do, or maybe once thought I might. And then there are a lot of things I can't say I much regret. And now I have one more thing to not regret: that I'll never set foot in the soon-to-open not-quite-top-of-the-tower One World Observatory of 1 World Trade Center.... more »
Is Yemen Going To Be Saudi Arabia's Quagmire?
*Hugh Naylor, Washington Post:* *For Saudis, Yemen conflict risks ‘becoming their Vietnam’* *BEIRUT — Two weeks into a Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen, the airstrikes appear to have accelerated the country’s fragmentation into warring tribes and militias and done little to accomplish the goal of returning the ousted Yemeni president to power, analysts and residents say.The Yemeni insurgents, known as Houthis, have pushed ahead with their offensive and seem to have protected many of their weapons stockpiles from the coalition’s bombardments, analysts say. A Victim of the Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR) Writes
The Memphis Teacher Residency is the creepy Christan version of Relay's secularly-creepy one year teacher preparation indoctrination camp, whereby naive aspirants are exploited for their year's labor while paying for their exploitation at the same time. Following a story published in the *Christian Science Monitor*, I posted this in 2013 in response. Please have a look before reading on. Today I received the following comment, which was submitted at "A Former KIPP Teacher Shares Her Story," which has now almost 50,000 visits. It says all you need to know if you are thinking about ... more »

*New York Times*: *Kerry Says U.S. Knew of Iran’s Military Aid to Houthi Rebels* *CAIRO — Secretary of State John Kerry has said that the United States knew Iran had been providing military support to the Houthi rebels in Yemen and that Washington “is not going to stand by while the region is destabilized.”* *Mr. Kerry’s remarks, in an interview on Wednesday night with “PBS NewsHour,” appeared to be the most direct warning yet from Washington about Iranian support for the Houthi movement, which has allied with security forces loyal to a former leader and has taken control of Yeme... more »
Sean McFate: Shadow Wars: The World of Military Contracting
*Title: Sean McFate: Shadow Wars: The World of Military Contracting. Source: World Affairs Council. Date Published: March 25, 2015. Description:* Throughout Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, the United States employs private military contractors to carry out its objectives. While US firms dominate the market, warlords and militias have restyled themselves as private security companies in places like Afghanistan and Somalia. These private entities have become an integral part of the United States' defense strategy — the US can no longer go to war without contractors. How d... more »
DPP's China policy very clear, thanks
*Drying squid in Kaohsiung.* The DPP mission in the US sent this around. The DPP's position on cross-strait affairs is quite clear; those who claim that it isn't are doing the work of Beijing and the KMT. It looks like the "DPP's lack of clarity" on cross-strait affairs is going to be a KMT talking point this election, as I noted a couple of weeks ago in The Coming Pressure on the DPP, and as this Taipei Times piece again clarifies: The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislative caucus yesterday urged Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) to clarify he... more »

Yemen has historically been a graveyard for many invaders [Reuters] *Gamal Gasim, Al Jazeera:* *Analysis: Boots on the ground in Yemen? Think again* *As the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen enters its third week, the majority of Yemen's territory remains under the control of Houthi rebels and former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh loyalists. This raises the question of whether the Saudi-led alliance will expedite plans to begin a ground troops incursion into Yemen. It is unclear, however, whether sending ground troops will help achieve the political demands of both Saudi ... more »

Maximum Capacity - ?
This is about your capacity for love. It is greater than you imagine it to be. It involves no loss or lack. Love is not something you have to wait for or get or earn. Love is something that you are. It is a challenge to let go of our rules about love. How can you love yourself completely when you know all the stuff you’ve done? When you, more than anyone, know exactly what it is you think about? When even god demands something from you in order for you to be worthy of his blessing? How can you love yourself with all of your shortcomings, faults and mistakes? The toughest l... more »

Adverse Possession under the Registry Act
McClatchie v. Rideau Lakes (Township), 2015 ONCA 233: 9] Before turning to the trial judge's decision and the issues raised by the appellant, I will briefly review the law of adverse possession. This law is not in dispute. To establish adverse possession of certain lands, a claimant must demonstrate that throughout the ten-year adverse possession period, he or she: a) had actual possession of the lands in question; b) had the intention of excluding the true owner from possession; and c) effectively excluded the true owner from possession: *Masidon Investments Ltd. v. The Progressive Majority-- Building A Bench, Nurturing A Farm Team
Gloria Totten is president of Progressive Majority, a group that works to elect progressives to state and local office. The GOP has completely outgunned the Beltway Democrats in this arena, and without the steady efforts Totten and her group have been exerting to recruit and train progressive candidates, the Democrats would be in even worse shape bench-wise than they already are. Most people don't contribute to political campaigns. And most of the ones who do give to presidential candidates. Some give to Senate candidates. It becomes really slim pickings after that.
