Security In Iraq, Jun 15-21, 2018

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 13 hours ago
The Islamic State’s attempt to rebuild the insurgency continued to ebb and flow. After a large number of incidents the second week of June things calmed down the next week. The major area of violence was actually in northern Kurdistan where Turkey was still bombing the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). IS did unleash a new wave of kidnappings across Diyala, Kirkuk, and Salahaddin. There were only 42 incidents in Iraq reported from June 15-21. That was the third lowest amount for any week of the year. Salahaddin with 11 incidents was the only province with double figures in incidents.... more »

How Cynical Is the Democratic Party's Support for Identity Politics? (Plus a Note on the Ocasio-Crowley Contest)

*Albright: "Younger women, Hillary Clinton will always be there for you" ... plus that other thing she said.* *by Gaius Publius* How cynical is the Democratic Party's support for identity politics? To this observer, it seems impossible not to notice that those in control of the Democratic Party care about "identity politics" — about supporting more women, more people of color, more LGBTQ candidates, etc. — only when it suits them. Which means, if you take this view, that their vocal support for the underlying principles of "identity politics" is both cynical and insincere. As I... more »

No (Internet Sales) Taxation without Representation!

Ron Paul at - 13 hours ago
[image: undefined] Last week the United States Supreme Court, in the case of South Dakota v. Unless Congress exercises its authority under the Commerce Clause to counter this decision with legislation, retailers will have to calculate sales taxes on every online purchase. An Effective Marginal Tax Rate

Interesting numbers from Phil Gramm and Robert B. The second quintile’s share more than doubled, rising from 7% of earned income to 13.9% of spendable income. For the third quintile, middle-income Americans, the increase was much smaller, from 12.6% to 15.4%. To portray the PM as a trust-fund aristocrat who hasn’t got the foggiest idea of how ordinary people live. Not a man of the people, but of the beautiful people. Not a weekend cottage kind of guy, but a holiday buddy of the Aga Khan kind of guy. You can see that strategy at work in Andrew Scheer's reaction to the $7500 swing set Trudeau bought for his kids and had installed at Harrington Lake: The way Conservativ... more »

But three crucial questions are: 1) is the scientific community really united?, 2) can solar and wind take over any time soon to provide the required vital energy for the maintenance of modern civilization in today's world of 7 billion people?, and 3) has CO2 caused any harm yet? The answer to all three questions is no. A major theme of this essay is that ... more »

Serving The 2 Billion Unbanked: A New Trillion Dollar Market

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 22 hours ago
This is a revisit to the rapidly expanding of digital banking which must succeed in providing services to everyone. It is astonishing successful in Africa were no service existed, yet the Banking industry has been very slow to adopt any of it. This though tells us that protocols are now in place allowing rapid expansion anywhere and this must happen . Thus it has only been slowed down while the new dawn matured totally. It is now a burgeoning global phenomena. This will actually employ tens of millions of people. Think about that for a second.. *Serving The 2 Billion Unbank... more »

How Turmeric Can Save the Aging Brain From Dementia and Premature Death

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 22 hours ago
This is more on turmeric and its benefits. It turns out that turmeric acts powerfully to restore damage caused by Alzheimer's and Dementia. As this becomes a serious problem for those reaching their ninth decade of life, it needs to be heavily inserted into the diet a lot sooner. It is actually remarkable just how bioactive this spice happens to be. It joins a short list of plant products whose value is so rich. I do think that we need to be aggressive in applying turmeric strategies. We likely need a turmeric pudding to really make best use of it as this also supplies eggs. ... more »

Early study into 16:8 intermittent fasting suggests weight loss benefits

[image: One of the first studies into the effects of a 16:8 fasting diet on obese subjects...] You can see where all this is going. Ideally i do a twenty four hour fast on three separated days which are monday, wednesday and friday. There is also another component not noted here. It is that all eating has a significant social aspect which can easily work against your plans. The main take home though is that even the daily 16:8 program experienced a 300 calorie intake drop which should produce a significant loss. My more rigorous 4:3 program has the effect of limiting your food inta... more »

*by Noah* As the new week begins, we look back at Herr Trump's biggest lie of last week and await, with grim anticipation, what lies he will spew upon America this week. Some might say that a dishonorable mention should go to his related lie that only Congress could fix the situation, a situation his policy created, and then pretending to make everything all better with a toothless executive order that was only designed to deflect and quiet down the angry reaction to his policy. That was just smoke and mirrors. However, I will give Señor Trumpanzee a little slack on this one. You... more »

For much of the U.S. foreign-policy establishment, there is no more sacred word than “alliances.” They are regarded as a continuing symbol of all that is good about U.S. foreign policy—a testament to the success and strength of American v... more »

Why the United States Needs North Korea to Stay Nuclear

Hongyu Zhang, Kevin Wang at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Hongyu Zhang, Kevin Wang* *undefined, Asia* [image: A man walks past a TV broadcasting a news report on the dismantling of the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site, in Seoul, South Korea, May 24, 2018. REUTERS/Kim Hong-Ji] A nuclear North Korea is not a threat, but an ideal stabilizer. Many are hopeful that the June 12 summit in Singapore between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will lead to denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula. Others believe the historical record makes clear that such a hope is overly optimistic. But what if allowing North Korea to... more »

The Challenges Facing a Would-Be Coup in Venezuela

Miraflores Palace/Handout via REUTERS] A successful military coup seems unlikely in Venezuela since high-ranking officials in the military explicitly side with the regime. After Venezuela’s dictator Maduro won the sham elections on May 20, the Trump administration has been facing the difficult question of how to push for a transition of power in Venezu... more »

*“Old Man, Old Man”* "Young men, not knowing what to remember, Come to this hiding place of the moons and years, To this Old Man. Old Man, they say, where should we go? Where did you find what you remember? Was it perched in a tree? Did it hover deep in the white water? Was it covered over With dead stalks in the grass? Will we taste it If our mouths have long lain empty? Will we feel it between our eyes if we face the wind All night, and turn the color of earth? If we lie down in the rain, can we remember sunlight? He answers, I have become the best and worst I dreamed. When I move my fe... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"

“It's the bubble versus the cloud. NGC 7635, the Bubble Nebula, is being pushed out by the stellar wind of massive central star BD+602522. Next door, though, lives a giant molecular cloud, visible to the right. At this place in space, an irresistible force meets an immovable object in an interesting way. *Click image for larger size.* The cloud is able to contain the expansion of the bubble gas, but gets blasted by the hot radiation from the bubble's central star. The radiation heats up dense regions of the molecular cloud causing it to glow. The Bubble Nebula, pictured above in sci... more »

*"Another Night in the Ruins"* "How many nights must it take one such as me to learn that we aren't, after all, made from that bird that flies out of its ashes, that for us as we go up in flames, our one work is to open ourselves, to *be* the flames?" ~ Galway Kinnell

*WNU Editor*: A brief summary on what has happened .... and will be happening this week. *(1) *On Friday the Justice Department sent to Congress a collection of files on the Russia probe .... *DOJ gives Congress new classified documents on Russia probe* (AP). The problem is that these files do not address the number one question that Congress has been demanding for months now and that is .... what evidence was found that was used to start the Trump - Russian collusion investigation. I do not know why the DOJ and Rod Rosenstein are refusing to turn over all of this information, but... more »

"Principles...Then and Now"

*Then...* "We should know what our convictions are, and stand for them. Upon one's own philosophy, conscious or unconscious, depends one's ultimate interpretation of the facts. Therefore it is wise to be as clear as possible about one's subjective principles. As the man is, so will be his ultimate truth." - Carl Jung *Now...* "Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others." - Groucho Marx

Two Different Constitutional Ideas

"We cannot allow all of these people to invade our Country. When somebody comes in, we must immediately, with no Judges or Court Cases, bring them back from where they came. "Survivors Of Domestic Abuse..."

"What happens to people living in a society where everyone in power is lying, stealing, cheating and killing, and in our hearts we all know this, but the consequences of facing all these lies are so monstrous, we keep on hoping that maybe the corporate government administration and media are on the level with us this time. Americans remind me of survivors of domestic abuse. This is always the hope that this is the very, very, very last time one's ribs get re-broken again." - Inga Muscio It's not...
