Organizers Have Fought For Debt Cancellation For Over A Decade
Following over a decade of activism against the United States’ massive student debt crisis, President Biden announced a plan on Wednesday to cancel a significant amount of student loan debt for tens of millions of low and middle-income Americans. Many organizers, whose work made the announcement possible, have viewed the news as a major victory for their movement. However, they also see it as just a small first step in a country where many borrowers — especially Black and Brown borrowers — are saddled with far deeper debts, and the root causes of educational inequity remain largel... read more

The animal makes no excuse for killing his prey; the human animal, on the other hand, can invoke God's blessing when massacring his fellow men. Digital Self-Harm Is A Mental Health Cry For Help
The teen years are a challenging time for people transitioning from adolescence to adulthood, especially if they have mental health issues. The online posting, sending or sharing of hurtful content is like being trapped in a small town, except possibly the whole world sees it. So why would someone do it to themselves? That's the puzzle of digital self-harm. Like older forms of self-harm (cutting, burning, hitting oneself), there is worry it will lead suicidal ideation and attempts, but since peers assume a third-party is the culprit, the dysphoric or abnormal reasons to post cruel, ... read more

Doofus Of The Day #1,095
Today's award goes to a sadly (?) departed (and certainly misguided) thief in Ghana. The authorities in Ghana are investigating after a man was mauled to death by a lion after he climbed into a zoo enclosure in the capital, Accra. The man, described as middle-aged, died from his injuries after Sunday's attack, officials say. Wildlife authorities suspect he may have planned to steal two rare white lion cubs which have become a big draw since their birth last November. The victim's body was retrieved from the zoo and taken to a local morgue. *. . .* A lion, a lioness and their... read more

"It Will Happen Suddenly"
*"It Will Happen Suddenly"* by Jeff Thomas "As the Great Unravelling progresses, we shall be seeing many negative developments, some of them unprecedented. Only a year ago, the average person was still hanging on to the belief that the world is in a state of recovery, that, however tentative, the economy was on the mend. And this is understandable. After all, the media have been doing a bang-up job of explaining the situation in a way that treats recovery as a general assumption. The only point of discussion is the method applied to achieve the recovery, but the recovery itself is ... read more

Russia has released a video of Chinese soldiers arriving in Russia for military exercises. The speed and number of soldiers which China,North Korea, Russia can amass and send into the EU, UK, and eventually USA, if and when it implodes economically, especially during a blackout, is something tobe considered. As the ink dries on the Inflation Reduction Act — the landmark federal law that tackles climate change, drug pricing, health insurance, and tax enforcement — advocates for the expanded child tax credit have been quietly mourning their loss. * Bias hotlines at US colleges have led to a witch hunt culture on campus* When I stepped on campus at NYU four years ago, I was handed a school ID by a public safety officer. On the back, I found a list of phone numbers: who to call if I was in danger, who to call if I was sick, and . . . a bias response line? Not long after, I found posters with the same number on the back of bathroom stalls, urging students to call and report bias on campus. Discrimination and harassment are one thing, but I found myself wondering what exactly constituted “bias.” Since I had watched students and... read more

Why Any Political ‘Scientist’ Who Calls U.S. A “Democracy” Is A Fake — NO Scientist

Blowhole wave energy generator exceeds expectations in 12-month test
I like this. Done right we have a two way bellows able to extract a serious portion of the passing wave stroke. We are talking about a simple restricted two way annulus able to convert the natural pressure stroke either way. hopefully without valves. I am glad that even the first outing has been positive. These can also be built into breakwaters in particular which are already controlling wave action. Then we will see artificial reefs with maximal wave action to work with. We may start this in Hawaii where we already have natural reefs to work with as well. *Blowhole wa... read more
