I hear you talking, but I am not buying it
When a philandering husband tries to explain why he reeks of someone else’s perfume as he saunters in after working late, most wives are not buying it. They hear him talking, but they certainly are not buying it. The failure … Continue reading → read more

ICYMI: The Week It Hits The Fan Edition (1/9)
Well, that was almost as much fun as when schools started up last fall. Fun times all around, for sure. And a hefty reading list for the week, and I'll warn you up front--it's not a cheery collection. A reminder that sharing is caring, and that if you find something here that speaks to you, it's a great idea to signal boost it out into the world. *Teacher shortages will linger after the pandemic wanes* Andrea Gabor at Bloomsburg opinion looks at the problems that pre-date covid and will outlive it as well. Secrets to try? Maybe rethinking what professional respect id supposed to... read more
America's Fleet of B-1 Bombers Is in Bad Shape
*David Axe* *B-1 Bomber, United States* The B-1’s readiness woes could force the Air Force to buy the B-21s more quickly, as the older swing-wing bombers might not last into the 2030s. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Round-the-clock operations took a toll on the 1980s-vintage warplanes. The Air Force twice in 2018 and 2019 grounded the B-1 fleet following mechanical failures. Just seven of the U.S. Air Force’s 61 B-1 bombers are fully mission-capable, South Dakota senator Mike Rounds revealed on July 30, 2019. The B-1 shortfall could weigh on the Air Force’s plans for a new b... read more

The Tory Surrender to Covid
The Tories and their press like their Second World War similes, so here's one for them. Boris Johnson likes to affect a Churchillian pose, but rather than fighting the Omicron variant on the beaches or, to be blunt, anywhere, he's raised the white flag. But this is something worse then Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policy or, for that matter, the French authorities who declared Paris an open city just before the German army arrived. No, Johnson and his government are the Covid equivalent of Vidkun Quisling and his collaborationist government in Norway during the Nazi occupation... read more

“Faceless - nameless- shameless”
That BBC article that so got my goat last night - *BBC seeks swift response to bus anti-Semitism story complaints* - remains unchanged. David Collier isn't impressed with it either and makes a further point: This is part of the problem. Look at the article. A typical BBC report. Not a single name attached to it. The identities are all hidden - no byline, just an unnamed 'spokeswoman'... an anonymous article with no accountability. Faceless - nameless- shameless. That's the BBC. read more
New Class of Russian Submarines Could Hunt Western Counterparts
*Peter Suciu* *Russian Submarines, * The Russian boat will likely have a more versatile arsenal than its American counterpart. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *Russia has one of the largest submarine fleets in the world, but it is aging, including nuclear and conventional attack submarines; guided-missile subs armed with cruise missiles; and ballistic missile submarines that are armed with long-range nuclear weapons. Russia will likely replace its aging *Akula* and *Victor*-class submarines with the *Laika* on a one-to-one basis. Last December Russian state-owned TV aired a s... read more

Why would Australian governments want a coil gun or rail gun?
Letter to the Editor It may seem they want to “remove all guns from free members of Society” by dividing Sporting shooters, but I’m not sure it really matters all that much to the powers that be. Home affairs at the end of last year were calling on public consultation in relation to the electromagnetic […] read more

What 'Newsnight' was doing in late 2016
There's a video doing the rounds this weekend of *Newsnight* pulling a stunt and mocking a call by a Conservative MP for the BBC to play *God Save the Queen* every night by playing the Sex Pistols' *God Save the Queen*, introduced with a straight face by Kirsty Wark. Though the same Conservative MP [Andrew Rosindell] has repeated his call this week, that *Newsnight* stunt dates from November 2016, back when Ian Katz was the programme's editor. He was fond of those kind of japes. I'm surprised we didn't cover it back then. *UPDATE*: Whoops. Well, that video, via Alex Belfield, h... read more

Celebrating
Radio 4's *Sunday* programme is achieving the impossible by getting even worse. It's transitioning from being 'the most liberal programme on Radio 4' to being 'the wokest programme on Radio 4'. A thoroughly one-sided piece this morning from the Khanate of London by *Sunday* reporter Vishva Samani dealt with the “heated debate” over removing 'controversial' public statues by celebrating a project funded by the Great Khan himself [well, funded by UK taxpayers actually] to 'diversify' statues, murals, etc, in the capital in the wake of the BLM protests. [Or as Douglas Murray put in the... read more
A F-35 Deployment to Europe Could Deter Russia from Invading Ukraine
*Kris Osborn* *F-35A, Europe* F-35s would be able to provide air support for Ukraine in the event of a ground attack by Russian forces. Close air support from the United States and NATO allies could be vital to help defend Ukraine if Russia chooses to invade. Ukraine is already armed with American-produced Javelin anti-tank missiles to engage Russian armored vehicles. A mix of high-altitude bombers, reconnaisance aircraft, drones, and manned fighters would all be useful for providing air support in Ukraine. While the legendary A-10 Warthog is known as a standout close air suppor... read more
Why the B-21 Raider Could Be Armed With Air-to-Air Missiles
*David Axe* *B-21 Raider, United States* There is some precedent for a bomber aircraft with a secondary air-to-air mission. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The A-12 was designed to carry two AIM-120 medium-range air-to-air missiles in addition to air-to-ground weaponry. But the U.S. Defense Department canceled the A-12 in 1991. The U.S. Air Force’s new B-21 Raider stealth bomber could fly as early as 2021. And at least one Air Force general believes the new Northrop Grumman-made bomber could gain air-to-air capabilities in order to help it fight its way to its target. There... read more

Why the Retired F-117 Is Still Training With F-15 Fighters
*Alex Hollings* *Stealth Fighter, * Low-frequency radar has long been able to spot stealth aircraft in the sky, but isn’t accurate enough to actually target one. *Here’s What You Need to Remember: *Stealth does not make an aircraft invisible to radar, nor is radar the only way aircraft are targeted. The world’s first operational stealth aircraft, the F-117 Nighthawk, made a surprise appearance in Fresno, California this week, despite being officially retired since 2008. We are NOT a democracy.
We talk a great deal about democracy. Our politicians will talk about it forever. Alas! Whatever our babble might be the reality is that most don't even know the meaning of democracy. Worse, I can't think of any nation in history that has ever been a democracy. (In fairness, I have to say it's possible that Canada's NDP might believe in democracy. But I know of nobody else - and that holds true for all the nations I have ever come across in years of reading. The vague idea is that democracy is what guides our society in its activities - that society guides us. And so we sent troops ... read more

Mad Dogs and BBC Managers
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven”, said the Preacher in *Ecclesiastes*, continuing that there's “a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to present a Radio 4 programme, and a time to stop presenting a Radio 4 programme”. Meanwhile, L. Frank Baum in *The Marvelous Land of Oz* said, somewhat less poetically, “Everything has to come to an end, sometime”. And so it is with Nigel Rees's 46 year run as host of Radio 4's *Quote...Unquote*. I listened to it as a teenager, which shows just how long ago it started. But the season has turned... read more

Sunday Discussion
It’s not a sermonette, but perhaps grist for discussion. There are two ways to look at this. Russia's New Borei-Class Submarine Could be a Big Future Threat
*Peter Suciu* *Borei-class submarine, Eurasia* The Russian Navy could eventually have a flotilla of at least a dozen of the Borei-class SSBNs before long. *Here's What We Need to Remember:* Despite having half the displacement of the *Typhoon-*class and being smaller, the Russian Borei-class submarines can carry a similar number of missiles.
