Reality Starts Penetrating The Trump Information Bubble
The latest ABC News/*Washington Post* poll has no cheery spots for Señor Trumpanzee. Nationally, his approval remains steady at a dreadful 38%, but it also shows "a career low in approval among Republicans, 74%, down steeply from a career-high 87% in July." (18% of Republicans want to see him impeached.) Only 30% of Americans consider his behavior "fitting and proper." 50% agree that he's using the presidency for personal profit. The red wall around him is beginning to crack as his popularity continues to sag. Republican thought leaders have been abandoning him as well-- and some ... more »

Saturday snippet: urinary frigidity
A few weeks ago, I published an excerpt from the late Brigadier Dick Lord's history of the South African Air Force, "From Fledgling to Eagle". It was well received, particularly because it was very funny, and I had several requests for more of his tales of flight and fighting in the service of three different countries. I'm happy to oblige, and I'll post more snippets from his books at odd intervals in future. This tale comes at the end of his advanced training as a pilot in Britain's Fleet Air Arm, during the very early 1960's. It's taken from his autobiography, "From Tailhooke... more »

Rod Liddle has caused a whirlwind by taking facetiousness a step too far. We generally enjoy his outrageousness, but I have to say that when he occasionally opines on stuff he is evidently quite ill-informed about, it spoils the effect. Examples? Anorexia was one. I forget the others, but I promise you there are some. On the other hand, has the entire world had a sense of humour - ectomy? Or do I mean ‘otomy’? As in when something offensive is surgically is removed. It’s so obvious (or it should be) that the controversial article in question was Rod Liddle's way of taking everythin... more »
Do Iran's Speedboats Have Any Chance Against The U.S. Navy?
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Middle East* Iran has been honing its asymmetric warfare capabilities for just this scenario. *Key point: *Iran plans to shut down the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. Iran has fielded a variety of unusual weapons over the years: F-14 Tomcat fighters hotwired to fire Russian missiles, homemade mini-submarines, and remanufactured Cold War jets. In 2006, Iranian television showcased a peculiar sea-skimming flying boat, and four years later Tehran triumphantly announced it had three squadrons of them serving in the Iranian Revolutionary Gua... more »
The Springfield M1A Rifle Is A True Classic Weapon Of War
*Gun News Daily* *Technology, * Here's our review. If there’s any one thing that the Springfield M1A rifle will be known for, it’s that it’s the semi-automatic civilian version of the military’s selective fire M14 rifle that has been in continuous service since the late 1950s. There’s no question that the M1A is a beautiful rifle, not to mention that it’s also very accurate, durable, and practical. It has plenty of modern applications not only for law enforcement and the military but for civilians as well, and it and the M14 also have a very rich history. It’s probably not fai... more »

There has been no formal declaration of war. No rockets landing on London or submarines sinking British ships. But Britain’s top military commander says Britain is at “at war every day” with Russia and other nations. The weapons aren’t explosive but digital, the battlefield cyberspace instead of mud. Why "Medicare For All" Is Not What It Seems (Think Medicaid Instead)
*Kevin Pham* *Politics, * Structurally, Sanders’ Medicare for All bill bears little resemblance to Medicare, but instead is very similar to Medicaid. Likewise, it would very likely carry with it all of the flaws of Medicaid Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., was recently on comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show to discuss, among other items on his agenda, his vision for health care in America. In one interesting statement, Sanders described the rollout of his plan: “I want to expand Medicare to include dental care, hearing aids, and eyeglasses, and then what I want to do is lower the... more »

Nazi-Normalizing Barf Journalism: A Brief History
In the beginning was the profile of the Nazi next door, an inexplicable decision by the New York Times (11/25/17) to profile a right-wing extremist in the most sympathetic light possible. It was the most outrageous example of an outrageous genre of MSM—and particularly NYT—reporting: the never-ending effort to profile, study, explain, excuse and rationalize Trump voters. Without, of course, referring to them as racists. White men are always news that’s fit to print.

This isn’t about the ‘generalection’, but I’m stealing the phrase in this title from Brenda from Bristol as a nod to people who are truly fed up with seeing articles about antisemitism. Of course, some of us may feel that attitudes to practically everything under the sun are affected by the Beeb.
