It’s time to get rid of the lottery

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
What the lottery provides is access to hope for all those whose life provides none of that at all. There is nothing truly wrong about that at all. That is innocent enough and it is actually a social good. Carping about the cost is just that and even mean spirited. No one can plausibly get addicted to this form of gambling, or if that is even possible, then the problem is far deeper. Otherwise, the reason it even exists at all its that it was formally a criminal enterprise operated by the boys known as the numbers racket. Folding the racket into government revenues solve... more »

The Diet That Might Cure Depression

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
This does inform us that the link between the gut microbiome is at least real if not necessarily the whole story. The take home for all of us is to eat properly. I do think that the central aspect is to ensure that vegetables including ample beans do dominate. Unfortunately this cannot be the entire story as we do not find a convincing shift in the meta stats for Vegetarians, Chinese or east Indians. In the event, it is appropriate to engage in a sugar fast in which beans and oils act together to displace sugar cravings. This can also plausibly help the problem as well as it may... more »

Why do so many people think that the Allied World War II strategic bombing campaign was a failure?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
Turns out that it was not at all. It deeply suppressed the manufacture of critical field guns in particular. At the same time maximum resources were plowed into anti aircraft guns whose efficiency was not justifying the expense or manpower. The need called for a fire base that forced the incoming bombers to channel but after that, it was mostly a huge waste of effort and ammunition. Saying more bombers would get through is not supported by what happened. Most got through and then bombed the same targets as ground Intel would be difficult with terrible accuracy anyway. The lit... more »

This Is the Beginning of the End of the Beef Industry

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
Possibly, but not quite. The agricultural need for animal husbandry is never going to go away and that does mean meat and by product production. What has never properly been exploited is the fermentation of ground meat what produces a savory mince meat product(s). In fact the agricultural need will ultimately expand to include all ruminants in particular as herd management is becoming critical. Again fermented products allow us to process meats and fats not otherwise not salable as quality cuts. The globe is entering full modernity and that means a large global expansion for ... more »

The Federal Government and Americans Do Not Agree on Immigration Policy

Mariano Sana at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Mariano Sana* *Immigration, United States* Where does the disagreement lie? Since its start, the Trump administration has implemented policies to step up immigration enforcement and reduce the number of immigrants admitted into the U.S. Many of these efforts – like the border wall, the travel ban, family separations, DACA termination and detention centers – have received wide media attention. In addition, the White House slashed refugee admissions, ended a number of special programs and changed rules used to adjudicate visa applications. As a result of these and myriad lesser-... more »

Chinese Drones Are Going to War All Over the Middle East and Africa

Sebastien Roblin at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, undefined* And killing lots of people. In the summer of 2019, China’s exported killer drones attained new notoriety—in both the dubiously positive and unquestionably negative sense. The cheap unmanned aircraft have proliferated across the Middle East and North Africa, executing hundreds of deadly attacks in Egypt, Libya, Nigeria and Yemen. But at least one type of “knock-off Reaper drone” seems beset by reliability issues. While every military on the planet is adopting long-endurance surveillance drone, until recently only a small subset possessed U... more »

How the "Christian Left" Found Their Voices Over the Treatment of Immigrants

*Laura E. Alexander* *Politics, United States* They could no longer sit on the sidelines. The protesters hoped that images of 90-year-old nuns and priests in clerical collars being led away in handcuffs would draw attention to their moral horror at the United States’ treatment of undocumented immigrant families. The Army's World War II Sherman Tank: The Best Worst Tank?

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Europe* Did the Nazi fear them? *For its part, the M-4 was good in 1942, adequate in 1943 and totally outclassed by 1944. Unfortunately for American tankers, the war lasted until 1945.American tanks in World War II were generally inferior to their German counterparts. German tanks boasted better armor protection and more firepower.* But armor and lethality don’t tell the whole story. The same American tanks were superior to their rivals in other important ways. Dead Warship: 5 Ways to Sink a Monster Battleship

The Origin of Pseudo-Problems

Unknown at The Verma Report - 1 day ago
The problems for which there are no solutions play a greater role in determining the fate of a nation, than the problems for which there are definite solutions. This is because the intellectuals and politicians are not interested in dealing with the problems for which the solutions are readily available; they understand that political power comes from squandering their nation’s resources on problems for which there are no solutions. If such intractable problems do not exist, then they do their best to create imaginary ones—and this is the root cause of all the pseudo-problems that m... more »
