Barky Broadcasts Myths About Firearms
Stepping to the microphone to diss the nation that rewarded him and his, er, wife with eight years as Chief Executive Officer — in a foreign country, of course — the Man Who Will Not Shut Up continues to broadcast misinformation about America’s gun laws and the nature of the persons who commit gun crimes. When I read a story like this, I am reminded of that Sherlock Holmes adventure where Holmes asks Watson about the “curious incident of the dog in the night time” — the dog that remained silent. How I wish Barky would remain silent and cease … Continue reading →

Hybrid MRI Approach Better Than Ultrasound For Detecting Prostate Cancer
Each year, 1 million men in the U.S. undergo biopsies to determine whether they have prostate cancer because ultrasound imaging cannot clearly display the location of tumors in the prostate gland. Why aren't those two sampling methods used in combination? A multidisciplinary team has found that biopsy guided by magnetic resonance imaging increases the rate of pr... more »

Trivia : June 12th
These things happened on this date in history…. Interracial Marriage Legalized June 12, 1967 The banning of interracial marriage is ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, bringing to an end such laws in 16 states. The case was brought by Mildred Loving, a woman of color, and Richard Loving, a white man, who had been sentenced to a year in prison in Virginia for marrying each other. After becoming pregnant, the couple went to Washington D.C. to marry in order to avoid Virginia law which made marriage between whites and non-whites a crime. After returning, the police raided... more »

Brief commentary on news tidbits that you might have missed. *Adventures in Norkland* The North Koreans are ruled by a God. Just ask the fat kid with the bad haircut. He will reassure you that he is at the very least 'a god'. At the same time, he is a prisoner of that near worship that drips like honey from the mouths of the people, his subjects, within the Hermit Kingdom. He cannot be seen to make the mistakes that lesser national leaders routinely make. Kim cannot be blamed for policy failures. "Forget Bribery. The Real Scam Is Pretending That Degrees Have Value."
That's the title of an article in Bloomberg by Elaine Ou. She makes some good points. ... none of the parents involved in the recent college admissions bribery scandal tried to get their kids into Caltech or MIT, the sort of universities where students are generally expected to acquire skills relevant to a productive career. As it turns out, parents pay obscene sums to marshal their offspring into elite schools not for the sake of education, but to secure their offspring’s socioeconomic status. Successful parents in the upper middle class can leave money to their children, but th... more »
"SEGREGATION" AND SCOLD: What makes New York (State) the worst state of all?
*WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 2019Thanks to lazy scholarship, we can't really say:* According to the leading authority on the subject, Gary Orfield was one of two co-founders of the Civil Rights Project. According to that same authority, the "renowned multidisciplinary research and policy think tank" was founded at Harvard in 1996. In January 2007, the institute moved to UCLA, perhaps in search of a more suitable climate in which to grow the various beans it unhelpfully counts to this day. At any rate, in March 2014, the Civil Rights Project published one of its most widely-cited reports... more »

*"The Cost Of Knowing It..."* "There's a truth deeper than experience. It's beyond what we see, or even what we feel. It's an order of truth that separates the profound from the merely clever, and the reality from the perception. We're helpless, usually, in the face of it; and the cost of knowing it, like the cost of knowing love, is sometimes greater than any heart would willingly pay. It doesn't always help us to love the world, but it does prevent us from hating the world. But the middle class presented a threat to an all-powerful government, determined to protect the rich and the strong - and the worthless, the mean, the haters-of-work, the whining cowards who wanted everything for nothing. A Fictitious History of Mankind
In his book *Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind*, Yuval Noah Harari uses his fertile imagination to conjure a dark picture of mankind’s past and future. I managed to wade through the first two parts of the four-part book, and now I have decided to take a break from Harari-ism. His book does not contain much actual history— it’s full of wild speculations, brazen lies, and dubious analysis. I don’t see any benefit in reading it to the end. Here's a review of the first two parts of the book: Harari speculates that the *homo sapiens* were responsible for destruction of almost every ... more »
