Why Is A Non-Browning Apple Less 'Natural' Than Non-Fat Milk?
Once upon a time, non-fat milk (the cream removed) was only used for fattening pigs. It was clearly a technological process to remove the cream but it is not considered "unnatural" - in 2012, the Obama administration even told schools to start serving it as a healthier alternative to regular milk. Meanwhile, the same administration delayed a salmon because it had a gene from a similar salmon that would allow it to grow all year 'round. The second technology was "unnatural." read more
No Ghost In The Machine: AI Taking Over The World Is Unscientific Paranoia
Should we be afraid of artificial intelligence? For me, this is a simple question with an even simpler, two letter answer: no. But not everyone agrees – many people, including the late physicist Stephen Hawking, have raised concerns that the rise of powerful AI systems could spell the end for humanity. Clearly, your view on whether AI will take over the world will depend on whether you think it can develop intelligent behavior surpassing that of humans – something referred to as “super intelligence”. So let’s take a look at how likely this is, and why there is much concern about ... more »
New Tax Plan Makes It Easier to 'Ed-exit'
[image: undefined] This week the House of Representatives will vote on a package of bills making the temporary tax cuts contained in last year’s tax reform bill permanent and making additional tax law changes. The bills will likely pass in the House, but will almost certainly be filibustered in the Senate if the Senate leadership tries to bring them to the floor. The GOP tax plan does offset some of the damage caused by federal control of education by making it easier for parents to escape failing government schools or “edexit.” It accomplishes this by allowing money saved in a ta... more »

Researchers Break Down Keto Diet Claims

BWorld 252, Mining, Itogon and Lee Kuan Yew
* This is my column in BusinessWorld last September 20, 2018. Strong structures, transparent and properly registered businesses are among the important protection of people against natural calamities like strong storms. An informal business tends to have informal physical structures in order to evade being noticed by government regulators as doing well, that way they can evade paying many taxes and business permits. The tragedy of the Itogon landslide in Benguet that buried many small-scale miners living in shanties is an example of an informal business having little protection a... more »

I have posted my latest essay, The First Amendment in the Second Gilded Age, on SSRN. It is based on the 2018 James McCormick Mitchell Lecture I gave at Buffalo Law School in April of 2018. Here is the abstract: How do we pay for the digital public sphere? In the Second Gilded Age, the answer is primarily through digital surveillance and through finding ever new ways to make money out of personal data. Digital capitalism in the Second Gilded Age features an implicit bargain: a seemingly unlimited freedom to speak in exchange for the right to surveil and manipulate end users. To p... more »

Moscow could adequately respond to the downing of Russia’s Ilyushin Il-20 aircraft over the Mediterranean Sea by closing Syria’s air space, Science Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Science Vitaly Naumkin told TASS, commenting on the information released by the Russian Defense Ministry on Sunday. *Texas education officials finally OK Mexican-American studies course* After four years of battles over ethnic studies textbooks and courses in a state with a booming Latino population, state education officials gave final approval to adopt a Mexican-American studies course that can be taught statewide. Although the State Board of Education OK’d the course with no discussion at its board meeting Friday in Austin, the issue of teaching Texas students about the influence of Mexican-Americans has dominated much of the board’s discussion for more than four years. Theory and Practice
In theory, a theory is abstracted practice, and a practice is applied theory. But, in practice, that is not the case. Most intellectuals are unable to reconcile their theories with practice, which is why much of philosophy appears impractical. In the book that I am currently reading, Edmund Burke’s *A Philosophical Enquiry into the Sublime and Beautiful*, I found the following comment on theory and practice (Part 1, “Conclusion”): It is, I own, not uncommon to be wrong in theory, and right in practice: and we are happy that it is so. Men often act right from their feelings, who aft... more »
Journal reverses retractions, says apparent citation manipulation was “an innocent and honest mistake”
A journal that retracted three papers earlier this year because of concerns that one of the authors had asked conference presenters to cite them has republished the articles, saying that it has “inconclusive evidence of improper behavior.” In February, we reported that the Journal of Vibroengineering had retracted three papers by Magd Abdel Wahab, of … Continue reading Journal reverses retractions, says apparent citation manipulation was “an innocent and honest mistake”
PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN?
It's possible that the new allegations against Brett Kavanaugh will persuade Republicans that it isn't worth fighting to save him. But if that were the case, there'd be silence right now on the right as the party assesses its options. Instead, we've got this from a top apparatchik at the *Wall Street Journal* editorial page: The left made a mistake with this Ramirez story. It isn't just how embarrassingly flimsy it is; she was inebriated; took six days to find memories; everyone denies it. But it strongly suggests the Ford delay demands were about cooking this up. *Fake news about refugees* *Yes. Africa has droughts. Always has had and always will have. Yes, there are many genuine refugees but all we know of are fleeing war, not the climate. That some are fleeing the climate is just made up -- fake news. Some are certainly fleeing as a result of bad weather events such as drought but tying weather events to global warming is pure speculation. It cannot be proven and there is no increase in such events if we look at the statistics. There were many equally bad events in the past* From African farms shriveled into desert to monster storms re... more »

Voting for War
In a recent vote, the United States Senate proved that it can act with a single-minded purpose when it comes to one issue; war. On a recent vote taken on September 18, 2018, the Senate overwhelmingly voted to approve House Resolution 6157 as you will see in this posting. As background, H.R. 6157 formally entitled "An Act making appropriations for the Department of Defense for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2019, and for other purposes." can be summarized as follows: "*Provides FY2019 appropriations to the Department of Defense (DOD) for military activities. It Can't Be Redeemed
As new allegations of his sexual misconduct arose over the weekend, Republicans doubled down on their defence of Brett Kavanaugh. If you're searching for the motivation behind their behaviour, E.J. Dionne writes, take a good look at the Christian evangelicals who form the base of the party: They want Kavanaugh on the court, no matter what. “If Republicans were to fail to defend and confirm such an obviously and eminently qualified and decent nominee,” Ralph Reed, the founder of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, told the New York Times, “then it will be very difficult to motivate a... more »

The politics of destruction
What we're seeing from the Democratic Party and the progressive far-left-wing of US politics, in connection with the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to be the next Justice of the Supreme Court, is nothing less than the politics of destruction. It's straight out of Alinsky's book "Rules for Radicals", aimed squarely at not just the discrediting, but the demolition, of a good man *by any means, fair or foul*. If Judge Kavanaugh's nomination is defeated, he will be so damaged and besmirched that I don't see any way he can continue in his present position as a judge on an appeal court.... more »

The Significance Of This Weekend's Terror Attack In Iran
*Reuters:* *Significance of attack on military parade in Iran* A deadly assault on an Iranian Revolutionary Guards parade dealt a stunning blow to Iran’s security establishment, which has often said it can repel any threat no matter how big, even from the United States and its chief Middle East ally Israel. Saturday’s shooting attack, among the worst ever on the Guards, illustrated that Iran’s elite force, which answers directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, can be vulnerable to guerrilla-style operations. As i have been posting, farmers need to integrate trees with their cropping strategies and their technology. The benefits are all too obvious, not least from the movement of deep nutrients back onto the surface and the additional release of nitrogen from the root systems. They have begun doing this in the Sahel and i expect the forest to march back into the Sahara and ultimately reforest the entire Sahara with perhaps a little help, but really not that much. The Sahara was grassland at least five thousand years ago. Proper husbandry and it can be a vigorous forestland as well.... more »
Patrick Buchanan: A cancer grows at the Catholic Church
The real issue is that neither sexuality nor homosexuality happens to be benign. Attempting to deal with it through celibacy is obviously impossible and protecting in-celibate priests is absurd if you maintain a doctrine of celibacy for priests. Historically, celibacy simply meant that those in society who were subject to aberrant urges naturally ran to the Church for shelter at the least and companionship with like. Thus we have this more public problem now that society is prepared to no longer suppress the problem and largely deny its existence. Expelling all homosexuals fr... more »
