How To Ride Out The Apocalypse

*Eugene K. Chow, The Week:* *How to ride out the apocalypse in a big city*
Thanks to wildfires, hurricanes, and certain leaders trading threats of
nuclear annihilation over Twitter, you've probably been thinking a lot
about disasters recently — specifically how not to perish in one.
And if you live in a city, this kind of thinking can be extra fraught. It's
easy enough for doomsday preppers living in the woods to head for bunkers
filled with canned food, but how are you supposed to get out of dodge when
you don't even own a car?
Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, there ... more »

Now the day of reckoning has arrived, marked by the meeting of Presidents

Syria has been under siege for six and a half years – longer than the siege

provisionally but with some modest confidence, that this gets the analysis
wrong. Sure, they can't use reconciliation to enact the proposal with a
simple majority. But, as I understand things, nothing stands in the way of

Some things never change
A rose among four thorns
I've not done a post about *Dateline London *in a while, but today's Brexit
discussion was so typical that it deserves a brief mention.
Pro-Brexit blog favourite Alex Deane found himself up against it (as he
almost invariably does). He was very definitely the odd man out on the
panel. Annalisa Piras (of *The Great European Disaster Movie* fame),
Stefanie Bolzen of Die Welt and Bloomberg's Stephanie Baker all piled on
the Brexit-related doom-mongering - and piled in on Alex too! And, making
it four-against-one, presenter Jane Hill joined in as well, making it... more »

This and that for your weekend reading.
- David Climenhaga comments on the tendency of even progressive governments
to unduly accept neoliberal frames and theories - with Rachel Notley's talk
of "compassionate belt tightening" sadly serving as the latest example:
Premier Notley told reporters that her government spent money on
infrastructure and services during the recession caused by the
international collapse in oil prices, but now that the economy seems to be
perking up at last, it's time to alter course.
This seems to make sense in a classic John Maynard Keynes, Economics 101,

Is it Maoist to complain about BBC bias?
Back in April, I looked into a tweet by Tim Montgomerie that asked "Are all
presenters of Radio 4's *Week in Westminster* Remainers?" and found that,
though they *weren't *all Remainers, Tim did have a point about the balance
of Remainers and Leavers.
Out of the 26 episodes between the EU referendum and then only 2 episodes
had been fronted by an open Leave supporter (Peter Oborne) while 14
episodes had been fronted by open Remain supporters.
Tim has returned to the fray today with another such tweet:

*Sleeping Beauty ‘fuels culture of sexual assault’*
The story of Sleeping Beauty, the princess condemned to slumber for 100
years who can be woken only by a kiss from a handsome prince, has entranced
generations of young children.
One mother, however, says that the fairytale is not so innocent and has
called for it to be removed from the curriculum at her son’s school because
it has an inappropriate sexual message.
Inspired by the #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment, Sarah Hall said
that the story promoted unacceptable behaviour because the prince had not

I was really touched by this video as it brings up our shame as Alaskans

Many federal soldiers who survived the battle agreed.
“Lee’s army is really whipped,” declared Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to Maj.
Gen. Henry Halleck on May 26, 1864. “The prisoners we now take show it, and
the actions of his army show it unmistakably. A battle with them outside of
