Rahm Emanuel Isn't In Prison... So He'll Just Continue His Crime Spree For As Long As He Keeps Getting Away With It
When criminal types aren't prosecuted for their criminal behavior-- when they get away with it without paying a price-- it effectively gives them permission to keep it up and even go further down the road of criminality. We've been writing about Rahm Emanuel's criminal behavior-- behavior rewarded with immense sums of money, prestige and power... and more money-- and how he always gets away with it. It's the public that pays the price. Justin Elliott, writing this week for *ProPublica* shows how Rahm and other grotesquely corrupt Democrats have helped turning flying into a hell on ... more »

Fiction Review: 'Salem's Lot
The town knew about darkness. It knew about the darkness that comes on the land when roatation hides the land from the sun, and about the darkness of the human soul. - *'Salem's Lot* by Stephen King, Chapter Ten There's a point of view that one should only read a book once. After that, why read it again, you know what happened. Truthfully, for some books, most even, that's definitely the case. But for me, there's certain books I read over and over again over the years. Not to find out what happened, but to experience the book again. And to take away something new from it. The b... more »

Is The Media Accurately Covering The Yemen War?
*Tom Cooper, War Is Boring*: *Much of What You Think You Know About the Yemen War … Is Wrong* Let’s cut through the misinformation With the latest spate of air strikes, civilian massacres and ballistic-missile attacks on Saudi Arabia and a U.S. Navy warship, the seemingly endless war in Yemen has worked its way back into the headlines. *Reuters*: *To stop bloodshed in Yemen, Obama must cut back Saudi support* In the early hours of Oct. 13, the American military carried out its first direct action against Houthi targets in Yemen, firing cruise missiles that destroyed three coastal radar sites. The strike was retaliation for two failed missile attacks on a U.S. Navy destroyer days earlier. The Houthis presumably targeted the United States because of its support for Saudi Arabia, which has been bombing Houthi rebels and their allies in Yemen since March 2015. *Read more *.... *Commentaries, Analysis, And Editorial... more »

The American singer-songwriter has been an influential force in the conciousness of man. Bob Dylans’ songs during the 60s in the U.S. helped the hippie movement bring the issue of marijuana to the forefront. Tax Cut 27, The Furusato tax in Japan as possible model in citizen empowerment
A Tokyo-based Filipino friend, Jules, shared this article from Tokyo Weekender: *The program was launched in 2008 as a way for a person to make a charitable donation to a municipality or prefecture of their choice—whether or not it was their hometown. Donors can even specify the purpose for which they want the money to be used: educational projects and helping the elderly are two examples. Beyond the feel-good aspect, though, there are two benefits that make donating all the sweeter.* *The first of these is that donations are tax deductible: depending on how much you donate and you... more »

An Alternative Look At Iraq’s 1970s Economic Development
The 1970s is widely considered a golden period for Iraq. During this time, oil production increased, and astute government planning was able to use that revenue to nearly quadrupled per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Life expectancy, school enrolment, and literacy all increased as well. Indiana State University Economics Professor Bassam Yousif studiedthis period, and while acknowledging the great gains that were made also argued that it was eventually undercut by politicization by the Baathist government. Iraq’s economy and society saw tremendous development in the 1970s. ... more »

National Coming Out Day is a good time for folks to come out of closets of all sorts
*by Ken* I realize that National Coming Out Day was yesterday, but as it didn't fall on one of my blogging days, I'm exercising blogorific license to stretch it to a two-day event. Of course the spirit shouldn't be term-limited -- the time for anyone to come out of whatever closet the person may be dwelling in is as soon as he or she is ready, and the time to help prepare everyone else is now, whenever now happens to be. One happy byproduct of the delay in celebrating the day is the opportunity to take note of last night's season premiere of ABC's disarmingly wacky sitcom *The Re... more »
“Don’t act like you own your children” [updated]
If there are children who suffer from the poverty of low expectations, there are many others suffering the pain of living out the expectations of their parents, instead of their own. Australian novelist and father of x Vinay Kolhatkar has some timely advice for such parents: “Don’t Act Like You Own Your Children.” *“You don’t own your children.” If those five words were ingrained in us, half the parenting problems in the world, and half the parent-child relationship strains would disappear. “No, I can’t bring them to your wedding, because they are not suitcases or trophies; t... more »
"We May Know..."
"We may know that the work we continue to put off doing will be bad. Worse, however, is the work we never do. A work that's finished is at least finished. It may be poor, but it exists, like the miserable plant in the lone flowerpot of my neighbor who's crippled. That plant is her happiness, and sometimes it's even mine. What I write, bad as it is, may provide some hurt or sad soul a few moments of distraction from something worse. That's enough for me, or it isn't enough, but it serves some purpose, and so it is with all of life." - Fernando Pessoa

Commentaries, Analysis, And Editorials -- October 12, 2016
*Frontline:* *Who’s Who in the Fight Against ISIS?* The global fight against ISIS has been halting and complex since it began in late 2014. The United States has led an international coalition of more than 60 countries against ISIS. Some nations — including the United Kingdom, Australia, France and a handful of regional powers — have helped launch airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, while others have cracked down on the flow of funds and foreign fighters to ISIS. Still others have contributed humanitarian aid, taken in refugees or provided weapons and training to fighters on the ground... more »
Putin To Russians Abroad: ‘Come Home Immediately’
Vladimir Putin has ordered all Russian families with children studying abroad to return home to Russia immediately, as fears grow that the world is on the brink of World War 3. The children are to return to Russia urgently for their own safety, according to a report quoting Putin in media outlet Znak on Tuesday. Russian intelligence sources believe that a major war with the United States is now more likely than it has been for decades. Government and media have warned the people to prepare for nuclear Armegeddon, after the U.S. announced it was “cutting ties” with Russia regardin... more »
WikiLeaks: Clinton Told Wall St. She Is 100% Against Legalizing Cannabis
WikiLeaks has revealed that Hillary Clinton told Goldman Sachs bankers that legalization of marijuana will not happen on her watch. WikiLeaks has been the most important thing that has happened to an election in a long time. We’ve been able to catch glimpses of the real nature of politicians and bureaucrats like never before, and see the state of democracy for what it is: a once mighty oak ravaged by white ants. In Hillary Clinton, we see a figure beholden to Wall St., working diligently to advance the influence of financial corporations over government policy and taxpayer money. H... more »

Goodbye Bees, Hello Tiny, Winged RoboBees
Following the news bees are now officially an endangered species as “colony collapse disorder” accelerates, a Harvard research team claims they have the solution – robotic honeybees. Researchers at Harvard and the University of Washington are building tiny robotic insect drones with the intention of replacing endangered bee populations. The police and military have also planned to use them for surveillance and “data gathering”. Instead of attempting to save the bees by reducing the use of pesticides, revising safety standards for cell phone radiation, or changing our destructive i... more »

Great Moments in Signage
Except in this case, it's not the sign that's so noteworthy but who's holding it up. I guess they're still awaiting Donald Trump's African American to arrive, in the back of the bus, no doubt. In case you're confounded by the teleprompter, the sign says, "Blacks for Trump." Which right now is a very active hashtag on Twitter. There's another active hashtag: #repealthe19th. As I'm sure virtually any woman reading this already knows, that's the constitutional amendment that gave women the right to vote in 1920. So, where did this movement begin? President Vladimir Putin has ordered for the deployment of the ZRK missile system to Syria in order to shoot down US Air Force planes in the region. British Tabloids Go Into WW3 Hysteria Over Unconfirmed Report
An unconfirmed report from a regional Russian news website has driven some British tabloids into a world war three frenzy. It managed to send some media outlets into overdrive using scaremongering narrative and images about the seriously aggressive Russia and how ‘Big Bad Vlad’ secretly wanted to nuke them. The allegations were based on a claim that Russian officials had been ordered to leave the West their families. RT reports: Based on anonymous sources, it has since been denied by the Kremlin. Still some British media outlets jumped at a chance for a little Russia-bashing exerc... more »

I don’t normally agree with Judith Collins…
I’ve found very little grounds for agreement with Judith Collins over the years, but there’s very little to disagree with in her off-the-cuff remarks to the Police Association's annual conference yesterday, as reported by Radio NZ. “Many of the problems blamed on child poverty can be blamed on parents, Police Minister Judith Collins says.” And that’s true, isn’t it. *Ms Collins was challenged at the Police Association's annual conference in Wellington today by a delegate, who said poverty was making law enforcement harder.* * The delegate said his officers had been very busy ... more »
A Defence of Stop the War
I'm definitely not a fan of the Stop the War Coalition. It has a legion of problems, rooted in a rather reflex anti-imperialism that leaves it open to claims of soft soaping dictators, and providing cover for whosoever incurs the displeasure of the State Department and Whitehall. That said, some of the criticisms thrown at the group over the last couple of days strike me as stupid and disingenuous. Such as Boris Johnson's argument that it should be organising demonstrations outside the Russian embassy against the vile atrocities committed in Aleppo. First things first, Stop the Wa... more »

Putin's Istanbul Trip...fleeting answers to fleeting questions.
*Erdogan and Putin* Geopolitical events stream by us at warp speed. So hard to keep track of what we were even talking about a week or two ago. Oh yes, now I recall...I was speculating that the reason for the sudden trip of Putin to meet Erdogan in Istanbul on October 10/11th was, in part at least, to quell a rumoured second coup attempt against Erdogan. It seems there was also a big Energy convention going on in Istanbul at the time. Lots of reason to have soldiers and security personnel in the streets. The report linked above is very clear about the terms of the proposed pip... more »
Is Rachel Maddow out of her mind?
*WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2016It might be time to check:* Yesterday afternoon, Al Gore appeared with Candidate Clinton in Miami, where they discussed climate change. In our view, Clinton gave about as good a speech as we've ever seen her give. Inevitably, though, the children searched for ways to gossip and snark about Gore. We were amazed by Rachel Maddow's treatment of the event. Let's start with the peculiar way she teased her upcoming segment: MADDOW (10/11/16): ...Ralph Nader went on for decades campaigning for consumer safety and for integrity and openness in government. Is Paul LePage's Primitivist Idealization Of Authoritarianism A Harbinger Of Things To Come For America?
*2 rotund fascists* What is wrong with the Maine state legislature? Starting with Charles Robinson of Kansas in 1862, only 15 governors have ever been impeached, Rod Blogojevich (D-IL), currently serving out a prison term, being the most recent (2009). Another relatively recent impeachment and conviction was in Arizona in 1988 (far right crackpot and vile racist Evan Meacham). Maine has never impeached a governor but the legislature has threatened to impeach the current misanthrope several times and then never followed through. LePage was elected twice, though never with a majority... more »
Oct. 12: An angry day
A couple of nights ago, I caught the last scene of the film "A Tale of Two Cities". This is Dickens' view of the French revolution , a view in which the dignified members of the French aristocracy are led to public execution by beheading - while the ignorant poor watch in laughter and jeers. The last man to die in the film is Sydney Carton, a young Englishman who had devoted himself to saving those dignified aristocrats from the ignorant mob. "I go to a far, far better place than I have ever been...." The story is more than a little one-sided. The French aristocracy had long been ... more »

Your parents are not millionaires, so it doesn't matter how intelligent you are, you aren't invited to their party. That's the great shame. The idiots have the gold, and the poor die to give it to them. So you better start to laugh, because this world is one big joke written by the few, at the expense of the masses.
