*VFP members Will Griffin (left) and Ken Jones (right) and I celebrate our successful entry into South Korea late last night* It was a time of conflicted feelings last night when Ken Jones (North Carolina) and I made it into South Korea and were met by Will Griffin (San Diego) who had arrived here in May. Sadly our two Korean-American friends Hyun Lee and Juyeon Rhee were denied entry into South Korea. They were put on a plane and sent back to the US. My old friend and sometime neighbor, film-maker (*Super High Me*) and marijuana legalization activist Alex Campbell, was very much there for me when I was undergoing the ravages of chemotherapy. He talked me into trying marijuana to help alleviate the devastating and life-threatening side-effects of chemo. It worked. Today I asked Alex to explain the connection between the War of Drugs and the accelerated friction between police and the communities they're supposed to be serving. *An American Police State-by Alex Campbell* If you live in the United States of America, you live in... more »

When I moved back to America after living a vagabond/hippie life style for close to seven years in Asia and Europe, I didn't have a career path. I tried a few things based on my experiences in Europe, teaching photography, working in health food restaurants, writing... We might have a slight Oreo obsession in our house. These delightful chocolate cookies are the perfect treat with a glass of milk, or in my case, a jar of peanut butter. About the only promise Hillary Clinton has made in her whole life that's got a chance of coming true is her unspoken mantra of, "I'm not Trump." And even that's veracious only in the most general and abstract of ways. Beyond that, I'd run my hand under the tap and check for myself if Clinton announced that water was wet. One of the many, many unspoken narratives during this convention, indeed this entire shambles of an election cycle, is that Hillary Clinton owes a lot of people. Holding onto regret is like dragging the weight of the past with us everywhere we go. Pierre Would Be Appalled

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 12 hours ago
Sometimes silence isn't golden. June 21st marked the anniversary of the passage of Bill C-51. When Justin Trudeau's party voted to pass the bill, they did so saying they would change it substantially once they were elected. Michael Harris writes: C-51 handed Canada’s spy service grotesque new powers that are unconstitutional, indefensible and unnecessary. Short of killing or sexually assaulting ‘persons of interest’ in its quest to disrupt activities deemed to be ‘dangerous’ to national security, CSIS was handed *carte blanche* by the Harper government.
